Some clarity here would be helpful re: what is apparently not the Lem Solaris.

What do you need to know about Solaris -- I have v. little experience admining it but I have written MPI and pthreads code on SunFire machines as well as admined a Apache/MySQL on it.

If you search for her on GIS, you get a lot of Russian bride sites

I last dealt with Solaris systems in 1999. If I can help, I will, but I'm afraid I"ve forgotten almost everything I knew.

Dan (Bah) Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 April 2006 21:28 (twenty years ago)

ah, its kind of ok now, i have a couple courses i think, and i wasnt sure whether to do the basic one as one of them, or self study that one, and do the intermediate and advanced.

is it good, to get into solaris?

terry lennox. (gareth), Monday, 3 April 2006 21:34 (twenty years ago)

I think so but I'm kind of biased.

I would suggest that if you're going to self-study the basic course, befriend someone in it or the person teaching it so that you self-study the same things; it would be aggravating to either self-study all the advanced stuff and miss basic nuances or to not study enough of the basics for the intermediate/advanced stuff to make sense.

Every time I have to use Solaris it makes me cringe. I know it's got certain advantages and fans and all that but damn I miss my Linux userland GNU tools that make things feel so much nicer and less like 1989.

joygoat (joygoat), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 01:12 (twenty years ago)

Solaris is:
My favorite sci-fi novel.
My second favorite OS (second only to OpenBSD).
My fifth favorite Tarkovsky film (which puts it in the bottom half).
Typical garbage from Hollywood.
I haven't played the version for Atari, can't comment on that.
(As for the Sun version - it's a KILLER version of Unix for high-end
servers. Rather pointless on generic hardware, or the desktop. "High-end"
in this context meaning roughly "more than $100,000".)

Why did Hollywood have to murder it? Why! Whyyyy!!!

Mr Jones (Mr Jones), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 03:27 (twenty years ago)

itll be on high end suns

i have some cbt stuff to use. also i think the basic course, is actually just unix essentials, which i think i shouldnt waste a course on

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 04:52 (twenty years ago)
