Just remember what ol' Jack Burton does when the earth quakes, the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake. Yeah, Jack Burton just looks that big old storm right in the eye and says, "Give me your best shot. I can take it."

Also, playing the DVD on slo-mo on the scene right when he first figures out how to fire his Tech 9 = classic.

In the history of film it's not uncommon for directors and actors to find they have a special rapport and to make a number of features together, often the greatest work of either. There's Bogart/Huston, and John Wayne was lucky enough to find both John Ford and Howard Hawks as men who could bring out the best of his talents. Anthony Mann found the dark side of Jimmy Stewart. Later on Peckinpah did great things with both Warren Oates and Ben Johnson, although this was kind of a different situation, as both men were mostly supporting players in a 'company' of sorts - much in the way that FF Coppola used John Cazale. Closer in spirit to the classic studio model was the relationship of Altman and Gould. Overseas as well, we've seen genius work from Kurosawa/Mifune, Herzog/Kinsky, Melville/Delon and Godard/Belmondo, among many others.

The more I think about it, though, the more I believe that the Carpenter/Russell trilogy makes all those guys look like the talentless, bottom-feeding suckholes we always knew they were.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Thursday, 6 April 2006 00:12 (twenty years ago)

One of the great DVD commentary tracks as well.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 April 2006 00:14 (twenty years ago)

i was listening to "ode to a centipede" by buckner and garcia the other day and thinking how much it sounded like the big trouble in little china theme song.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Thursday, 6 April 2006 00:26 (twenty years ago)

otm Austin, the Thing/Escape from NY/Big Trouble trifecta is one of the greatest b-movie film runs ever (also Austin left out John Waters and Divine...)

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 6 April 2006 01:08 (twenty years ago)

SHIT! Not on purpose. See also Scorcese and DeNiro.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Thursday, 6 April 2006 14:34 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...

35mm on the big screen, a filled theater of drunks in Portland.

I had forgotten how much a conglomeration of John Wayne & Han Solo that Kurt Russell was.

John Carpenter sings the song that plays over the credits.

Film is awesome, awesome, awesome.

"Hollow?"

"Hollow."

"Fuck it!" *slash*

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 25 September 2010 03:00 (fifteen years ago)

How had I forgotten how brilliant the scene is where Lo-Pan trash talks Burton.

"Shut up Mr. Burton. You were not brought upon this world to get it."

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 25 September 2010 03:16 (fifteen years ago)

"Which Lo Pan? Little old basket case on wheels or the ten foot tall roadblock? "

Stockhausen's Helicopter Quartet (Elvis Telecom), Saturday, 25 September 2010 03:49 (fifteen years ago)
