If you're recording straight to Mac, you'll either need to rely on its internal analog-to-digital conversion, or purchase an audio interface (M-Audio is among the more popular inexpensive brands), or ...

... you can get a USB microphone, which converts to digital within the microphone and sends the results to your Mac via a USB cable. I have a Blue Microphones Snowball that works this way and I recommend it highly if it fits your budget.

I have a very inexpensive USB condenser microphone from Samson, which I'm really quite happy with -- $80, no interface needed, and certainly gets the job done for vocals.

MXL 2003 is very good for vocals, and often come bundled with a small diaphragm condenser which is good for guitars. You will need phantom power, though, and some kind of decent preamp.
