Those photos and graphs appear disappointing for a non scientist until you get to photos 7 and (especially) 9 - then you get some idea of what it looks like. Picture 12 is worth seeing too, if you get a chuckle out of blatant filler in the 'A paper bag, yesterday' vein.

"What wave?"

Mr Jones (Mr Jones), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 04:00 (twenty years ago)

This wave--Cortez Bank, a few hours off the coast of San Diego--is about as big as the waves described above... and despite all that is being surfed by one Mike Parsons. From the film "Step Into Liquid".

https://twitter.com/SevenStonesBuoy is really good in a storm, too, for reports on UK Bobbings. I have never known a buoy to be so chatty, but you know what they say about Cornish Buoys.

UM. Most of Cornwall underwater, the train line to Penzance just not there. Scillies due to be washed away by end of week. Wow.

OK, I'm going to stop looking at Newlyn because I'm finding it too frightening, but it's compulsive looking at the wave damage.

Yeah, I know no one gives a shit about this stuff but me, and maybe Sick Mouthy because this is his commute home, but, for real:

^^^that used to be the main national railroad between Devon and Cornwall. Now there seriously is no there there. That is not a bridge, that is just the sea showing between hanging tracks.

Brunel not so unsinkable after all. :-/

I can't actually work out exactly where in Penzance this is, but I'm pretty certain that is not a tunnel, that is a wave going right over the road:

Fucking... just... HOW. My mind just cannot take that scene in. I know that harbour really well. I know how high that wall is, and how far up the Bay it is. That is just an impossible image.

Also, surfer dude, what the FUCK are you doing in the lee of that wall, are you trying to get yourself (and emergency services to boot) killed?

"righteous indignation shit" (Branwell Bell), Saturday, 8 February 2014 12:15 (twelve years ago)

A Scottish angler, seemingly oblivious to giganto waves of death.

xelab, Saturday, 8 February 2014 14:21 (twelve years ago)

That's incredible. I mean, you gotta give it to ~the Celts~, they just DNGAF about a little bit of weather. The craziest thing to me at the moment is all these reports on twitter that police are closing the main road into Porthleven and sealing off headlands on the north shore, not because of danger of weather, but to stop the crowds of people coming to just lookit the waves. Sitting in parking lots looking at waves is p much a national sport in Cornwall, but when they are coming over the tops of buildings, maybe it's a good idea to stay in?

"righteous indignation shit" (Branwell Bell), Saturday, 8 February 2014 14:25 (twelve years ago)

This is the church at Porthleven this morning, as a land lubber I would be drawn to such an awesome sight, but I would like to be a lot further away from the action than whoever took this photo.

xelab, Saturday, 8 February 2014 14:40 (twelve years ago)

It's not a church, it's the Bickford-Smith building - kind of town hall/council thing. But yeah, it's as big as church, and there should really not be water pouring off its roof like that, there should actually be some harbour walls in the way, like, uh here:

"righteous indignation shit" (Branwell Bell), Saturday, 8 February 2014 14:46 (twelve years ago)

At least some of the people causing traffic accidents in Portreath are posting photos of these monsters.

You probably have to have a sense of how HUGE this harbour wall is to get a sense of how ginourmous these waves are:

clue: it's BIG

My usual storm-watching spot completely swamped, and the metal gates that keep kids off the pier are mangled, they are supposed to be at right angles.

Kernow, I love you but please stay attached to the mainland?

"righteous indignation shit" (Branwell Bell), Saturday, 8 February 2014 18:50 (twelve years ago)

It's a curious phenomenon this wave watching - on the one hand, I'm absolutely certain that if I lived near the sea, I'd be watching; on the other, I see pictures of people the wrong side of sea defences to get pictures and think "you're insane" (and, perhaps more to the point, "Someone is going to have to risk their own life to rescue you.")

djh, Sunday, 9 February 2014 13:25 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, this is exactly the thing! I know quite a few members of the emergency services / their families and often think: you stupid tit, when I see someone doing something dangerous.

Sobering thought: after spending a week climbing all over Harbour walls in Portreath & trying to figure out how to get on the finger pier, in a family cafe, I met the guy whose job it occasionally was to pull bodies out. Most of them were jumpers (Hell Mouth is a popular spot for the desperate, apparently) but there's always dumb kids. I confined my wanderings to the lighthouse & dead man's hut after that chat.

"righteous indignation shit" (Branwell Bell), Sunday, 9 February 2014 13:51 (twelve years ago)

Really good old bbc doc here that posits that the cataclysmic Bristol channel flood of 1607 was the result of a tsunami rather than a giant storm surge. It also mentions a documented Atlantic tsunami hitting Cornwall in 1754 following a mega-earthquake in Lisbon.

Um, 90 foot waves?

I'm kinda scared. That's some serious next level "Deep Ones" shit!

"righteous indignation shit" (Branwell Bell), Saturday, 15 February 2014 00:20 (twelve years ago)

It's kind of weird seeing places that I day dream about moving to being hammered.

djh, Saturday, 15 February 2014 20:40 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, the past couple years of being stranded in Cornwall over Xmas because of flooding, or failing to get to Cornwall over Xmas because of flooding, or just seeing vast sections of the track simply disappear (or turn into canals as the Penzance stretch is currently doing) has rather cooled my desire to actually live there. :-/
