Bringing togther the various desktop picture threads...

I needed a new desktop wallpaper on my work computer that could keep me awake. Thusly...

when i win the lotto, i want the bathroom of my mansion to look like that, with tiles of varying shapes and colors.

whoa nice! did you do that yourself?

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 21:29 (nineteen years ago)

Hey so past desktop threads have inspired me to play around with non-Windows shells (on XP), but they all seem to be (let's say) "not for me" -- I can handle the super-twiddly minimalism of a lot of them, but I can't take aesthetics that are looking to make the computer look like something out of a particularly good sci-fi film (or the geekoid possibly anime-related looks of some of them). I'd actually be interested to use a shell that's like aesthetically nice, maybe even kind of print-looking. Are there any shell + style combos that have actually had design people involved in them? If not, what are the chances that a non-techy person with no significant design experience could rig one together?

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 21:30 (nineteen years ago)

I should say "non-Explorer shells," I guess.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 21:31 (nineteen years ago)

Nabisco -- I've found one litestep theme that's very simple, with not a lot of twiddly bits. Minimal and elegant. I'll link you to it as soon as I get home and find out what it's called.

I used the "Box Fitting" applet on Complexification.

Console log and weather map were via GeekTool.

The Equator Lounge (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 21:38 (nineteen years ago)

Here it is:
http://www.litestep.net/index.php?section=2&page=4&action=list&listing=thumb&order=title&direction=desc&limit=24&distro=all&type=all

It's the top right theme, and you can make the boxes curvy, too, if you like. Been using it forever.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 23:06 (nineteen years ago)

hahaha, litestep

Litestep is the most developed, looks like. The themes take some digging through, though, lest you end up with some godawful chrome-y "bad-ass" looking thing.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Thursday, 6 April 2006 04:57 (nineteen years ago)

Taken near the Byron Bay Lighthouse, just near the east-most point of Australia.

i use fluxbox at home, simple orange to red gradiated background on the one distro, a slightly modified version of 'cleancolor' on the other (looks like dark blue graphpaper). two rxvt terminals, a big one and a small one, green and orange courier on black. gkrellm system monitor thing on the right, xawtv or xmms or mplayer top left for my entertainment needs. no icons, everything done via right click menu. some of the fluxbox mods that people have done look stunning (http://fluxbox.sourceforge.net/screenshots.php) and i can't start to imagine how they were done but can't help but think all that transparency just makes it harder to see what you're doing.

i hope the boxes on that first screenshot move. 8)

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 6 April 2006 07:26 (nineteen years ago)

(i realise now that i should've written that in the style of an ink polaroid.)

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 6 April 2006 07:50 (nineteen years ago)

Hahahah yes!

God, it's years since I've read (or tried to write) one of those.

This ink polaroid is my current desktop. As you can see, I really need to tidy up my icons because it's impossible to find any of them quickly. Behind them is a Ffestiniog Railway works train - a single mess van hauled by a First World War diesel - in heavy snow. The driver is walking up the line, because he's worried that the points a quarter-mile ahead will be frozen. Moving the train any closer would make them operate, so he's walking on ahead to check them first.

Next to my monitor, you can see some of the crap that's on my desk - a box of blank CDs, and a tin of travel sweets, which I only bought because I was hoping to bump into a pharmacist I know. If you look really closely, you can just about see the biscuit tin that hides behind the monitor.

i'm too lazy to actually take a screenshot. but, that's the background i use and i'm on os x, with the appearance set to graphite, a hidden dock, and nothing on the desktop but a folder named "boekje" from a user on soulseek (i'm downloading 'the glass bead game' by breathless from them) in the top right corner.
oh, and i have an entire 4ad theme going on with my ibook, too. i own sixty albums on 4ad and i use all of the covers for my screensaver.

welcome to my sad, dark little life.

Looks like an expansion joint to me. Probably a steel or concrete framed building, so it's not a load-bearing wall.

or*

etrian odysseus (cozen), Tuesday, 6 April 2010 11:36 (fifteen years ago)

what command are you using for that?

koogs, Tuesday, 6 April 2010 12:18 (fifteen years ago)

because if it's just a bash command, like the geektool doc seems to suggest, then just pipe the output through tr "A-Z" "a-z" to convert it all to lowercase

koogs, Tuesday, 6 April 2010 12:20 (fifteen years ago)

for the weather:
curl --silent "http://xml.weather.yahoo.com/forecastrss?p=UKXX0061&u=f"; | grep -E '(Current Conditions:|F<BR)' | sed -e 's/Current Conditions://' -e 's/<br \/>//' -e 's/[b]//' -e 's/<\/b>//' -e 's/<BR \/>//' -e 's///' -e 's/<\/description>//'

for the time:
date '+%I:%M%p'

etrian odysseus (cozen), Tuesday, 6 April 2010 12:20 (fifteen years ago)

date '+%I:%M%p' | tr "apm" "APM"

will convert am to AM (i'd prefer 24 hr clock tbh - "+%H:%M")

koogs, Tuesday, 6 April 2010 12:27 (fifteen years ago)

and you need u=c on the end of weather instead of u=f to get centigrade (but i haven't tested that the rest of it parses correctly)

koogs, Tuesday, 6 April 2010 12:29 (fifteen years ago)

yes, that capital F in the Current Conditions needs to be a C.

the ; after the url gives me a syntax error running directly in bash

koogs, Tuesday, 6 April 2010 12:31 (fifteen years ago)

thx, I think I'll go w/24 hour. and just put up with fahrenheit temp, u=c doesn't seem to work

Latham Green, Friday, 3 June 2011 12:19 (fourteen years ago)

on linux you can run any of, say, the xscreensaver programs with -root to use them as animated wallpapers, the one showing the atlas with daylight and nighttime was always a favourite.

probably scuppered by compiz these days though (yes, doesn't work on natty / unity)
