judas (ken c), Thursday, 6 April 2006 13:35 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I mean, without Judas, the whole Christian story would be a bit of a washout, eh?

Bernard's Summer Girlfriend (kate), Thursday, 6 April 2006 13:36 (nineteen years ago)

x-post -- Like you would stop at just kissing Jesus.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 April 2006 13:36 (nineteen years ago)

"Dude, Judas, I don't know. That betrayal was just all right for me; it was a little pitchy in spots... not your best job, dog."

Yeah, I never understood why Judas would be vilified for giving Jesus up. I mean, Jesus had to die for our sins, right? And he knew that, right? Why would Jesus get all pissy about the fulfillment of his destiny? Is it because Judas was paid to do it? Details.

I like to imagine the Gospel stories with no Judas. "Right, then, I'll just go turn myself in to the Romans, shall I?"*

the judas thing feels kinda "made up" to me. i mean, first of all, he betrays jesus by showing the authorities where he is - um, they knew what he looked like, couldn't they have found him anyway? it's not like he had a secret hideout or anything.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Thursday, 6 April 2006 20:08 (nineteen years ago)

Of course they knew what he looked like, what with of all the WANTED posters and 24-hour news coverage -- ?? Really now.

elmo argonaut (allocryptic), Thursday, 6 April 2006 20:14 (nineteen years ago)

I support the veiwpoint that JC's "prediction" of being betrayed by Judas was actually a request, in order to fulfill the prophesies. Not that I'm any kind of a bible scholar, mind, but it would explain how Judas refused the silver and was generally not into the whole thing.

everything, Thursday, 6 April 2006 20:21 (nineteen years ago)

Sarcasm aside, considering

1) Jesus had only been in Jerusalem for a week in order to celebrate Passover, and
2) was arrested by Roman forces who didn't know him from Adam,

the story of Judas' betrayal of Jesus is hardly the Gospel plot-hole you suggest.

xxpost

elmo argonaut (allocryptic), Thursday, 6 April 2006 20:26 (nineteen years ago)

But Jesus must've been the only white caucasian guy wandering around 1st century Jerusalem, surely?

A Van That's Loaded With YSI? (noodle vague), Thursday, 6 April 2006 20:33 (nineteen years ago)

jesus was only handed over to the romans after he'd been arrested by a mob led by the chief priests and elders, who presumably knew what this notorious blasphemer looked like. x-post

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Thursday, 6 April 2006 20:38 (nineteen years ago)

what if they find out the biblical account of how things went down wasn't entirely historically accurate??!!

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Thursday, 6 April 2006 20:48 (nineteen years ago)

a friend sent me a tape of joe frank doing this essay-type thing from the perspective of joseph, jesus's earthly dad. totally awesome and sad and funny. i'd love to hear him do something similair with judas.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Thursday, 6 April 2006 20:53 (nineteen years ago)

Judas just didnt know how to love him. He didnt know why he moved him. He was just a man. Just a man. He was not a king. He was just the same... as anyone he knew. He scared him so.

it's just like an episode of 24 - "No Jack, don't torture Judas, he's undercover with the GOD. Jesus has to die, it's been approved."

timmy tannin (pompous), Friday, 7 April 2006 03:34 (nineteen years ago)

this is one gnostic text, a group that was working against certain gospel patterns, and one of thousands at that time and place, we have to stretch pretty far to put it into the xian canon (if it proves to be of time--which is a far stretch)

my favourite line about judas are the last two in dylans w. god on our side
