i'm thinking there are some interesting stories to tell. involving sellers AND buyers. okay, maybe a furry doc would sell better, but still, um... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=9504320182

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Thursday, 6 April 2006 15:37 (twenty years ago)

WTF. this makes anne geddes work look sane.

AaronK (AaronK), Thursday, 6 April 2006 15:41 (twenty years ago)

You WILL NOT believe this isn't real skin!

Ayeeeeeeeeee.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 6 April 2006 15:45 (twenty years ago)

i am not a nugget (stevie), Thursday, 6 April 2006 15:49 (twenty years ago)

maybe i need someone like david cronenberg to help me make sense of all this internet-based phenomena. it's like a pandora's box of subconscious need. i'd at least like to read a book on all the various sub-cults.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 6 April 2006 15:50 (twenty years ago)

There's something especially eerie about these, particularly the preemie ones.

Jaq (Jaq), Thursday, 6 April 2006 15:50 (twenty years ago)

This may be the creepiest thing I've ever seen.

My Psychic Friends Are Strangely Silent (Ex Leon), Thursday, 6 April 2006 15:51 (twenty years ago)

Sometimes Scott reminds me of this guy:

they will probably want to move on into anthropomorphic personal robots

S. (Sébastien Chikara), Thursday, 6 April 2006 16:04 (twenty years ago)

that is easily the most weird and fucked-up thing I've seen this year, probably last year too.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 6 April 2006 16:16 (twenty years ago)

Could someone please encapsulate briefly for me, as I just got confused by the website.

Bernard's Summer Girlfriend (kate), Thursday, 6 April 2006 16:17 (twenty years ago)

A friend of mine sold her son's preemie clothes on eBay and told me most of them went to people who had these dolls.

Jaq (Jaq), Thursday, 6 April 2006 16:19 (twenty years ago)

it's a highly realistic model of a tiny newborn baby. The pics had me fooled for quite a while, tbh, only it's feet & knees were a giveaway. As a piece of craftsmanship, I guess it's pretty amazing. On any other level, really creepy.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 6 April 2006 16:21 (twenty years ago)

"Reborning" is an ART, not a craft, and while there are different reborning methods and techniques floating around the Industry, they are not all created equal. While it is true that the many techniques of reborning are being
practiced by literally hundreds, only a select few actually produce Babies of discernable quality, distinguishable Beauty, and that actually appear 'life-like'. I was already an accomplished 'portraiture' Artist before my discovery of
reborning, and I've brought my Artistic passion and overly scrutinizing attention to detail into this amazing Art form. I have implemented only those methods & techniques that create Babies of
'life-like' realism. All Babies undergo the "photo test" upon completion. If they look 'alive' in the Photos... they pass the test & make it into your home. I promise to offer only Dolls of the highest quality; that have been tested for enduring beauty, and that meet or exceed the highest of Reborning standards. I guarantee my Babies while persevering in my Goal to "Elevate the ART of Reborning excellence".

"the Industry"

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Thursday, 6 April 2006 16:26 (twenty years ago)

So: to Reborn is a verb, and Anne Geddes is probably like a gateway drug for this shit. I imagine the punter just spirals down and down until the fateful day they decide to go and borrow a real one from the hospital.

A Van That's Loaded With YSI? (noodle vague), Thursday, 6 April 2006 16:30 (twenty years ago)

People take baby dolls, remove all the original paint and hair, add substances to the head and body that feel more like real babies, and repaint them with incredible attention to life-like detail. They add micro-rooted hair (one strand at a time) and eyelashes and sometimes "body plates", which cover the original doll's cloth body with the same intricately painted "skin". Then, they sell them to their "new mommies".

Jaq (Jaq), Thursday, 6 April 2006 16:31 (twenty years ago)

I blame the relentless societal pressure to have babies.

A Van That's Loaded With YSI? (noodle vague), Thursday, 6 April 2006 16:32 (twenty years ago)

the capitalization is the creepiest thing in that paragraph

sleep (sleep), Thursday, 6 April 2006 16:36 (twenty years ago)

christ. this is WRONG.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 6 April 2006 16:41 (twenty years ago)

Just wait til the random googlers show up, then you'll see WRONG.

When you say "the creepiest thing about this is..."

There is nothing about this that does not have a creepy factor of less than 100%

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 7 April 2006 12:57 (twenty years ago)

. and in answer to the question implicit,

Do not make this documentary, as this will also have a creepiefactor of "way too high to make viewing any kind of comfortable at all"

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 7 April 2006 12:58 (twenty years ago)

i thought maybe this was gonna be about the internet weirdos who claim they can shapeshift into animals and post stories about it on messageboards

+++++, Friday, 7 April 2006 13:34 (twenty years ago)

the best thing i ever saw was this "skeptical" faq warning you to take various factors into consideration if someone on the messageboard claims to have shapeshifted - "is their story believable? have then been a member of the community for a while, or just recently come along with bold claims of shape changing capabilities? do their experiences with phase shifting match your own?"

+++++, Friday, 7 April 2006 13:35 (twenty years ago)

once i listened to an art bell caller claim he was levitating his kitchen table while on the phone with art

+++++, Friday, 7 April 2006 13:36 (twenty years ago)

What's so weird about shapeshifting? I thought everyone did it.

Hi Kimberli, I just wanted to tell you the response that I've gotten with baby Leah. People have been amazed when they see her or her picture. They've thought she was real and you should see their faces when I tell them she's a doll. One woman thought I was saying "doll" as a term of endearment when she saw her picture. When they've seen her they say they had to take a double (and in some cases a triple) look to know that she wasn't real. I've had so much fun dressing her and holding her. I showed an older man at work her picture and told him I bought her for Christmas from ebay and he looked at me so funny and said, "Isn't that illegal." When I told him the truth he wasn't truly convinced. Everyone has been truly amazed at your talent. Just wanted you to know she is happy in her new home. She has a beautiful cradle and clothes to dress up in with stuffed animals to keep her company during the day. Now I need to keep myself out of the baby clothes section cause I just can't resist buying for her. She's spoiled rotten already. Again, thank you for sharing you talent with me.
