Prepare for yr audit, Mr Taylor:

"I feel like despite your rhetoric, that compassion and common sense have been left far behind during your administration. And I would hope from time to time that you have the humility and grace to be ashamed of yourself. What I wanted to say to you is that I — in my lifetime, I have never felt more ashamed of, nor more frightened by my leadership in Washington, including the presidency, by the Senate, and – and I would hope — I feel like despite your rhetoric, that compassion and common sense have been left far behind during your administration, and I would hope from time to time that you have the humility and the grace to be ashamed of yourself inside yourself. And I also want to say I really appreciate the courtesy of allowing me to speak what I’m saying to you right now. That is part of what this country is about."

NATIONAL HERO.

Sparkle Motion's Rising Force, Thursday, 6 April 2006 21:07 (twenty years ago)

I was outside with the protesters. They booed everyone who came out of the building. I'd like to think a few of them will see this clip and think about what they did. But I doubt it.

someone let this mitya out! (mitya), Thursday, 6 April 2006 21:09 (twenty years ago)

Well done that man but it says something bleak about our systems of government that this is a big deal.

A Van That's Loaded With YSI? (noodle vague), Thursday, 6 April 2006 21:14 (twenty years ago)

From the looks of that picture, somebody, somewhere, owes me money.

That reminds me of the WTO protests & hearing protestors instruct others to scream bloody murder and generally harrass "anyone in a suit." You can't generalize like that, even in those sorts of situations. You just don't know everyone's reasons for being there.

Sparkle Motion's Rising Force, Thursday, 6 April 2006 21:25 (twenty years ago)

reminds me of Kenneth Anger's story about wearing a suit and walking right into the Pentagon to perform a "real" magickal excorcism while all the stupid hippies were busy outside prancing around in their beards and beads.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 6 April 2006 21:28 (twenty years ago)

Woah, NC, raise up. Finally.

Jeff. (Jeff), Thursday, 6 April 2006 21:32 (twenty years ago)

You can't generalize like that, even in those sorts of situations. You just don't know everyone's reasons for being there.

actually, you sorta can given who gets into the events these days. most of the time it's local gop people, they screen questions, and they don't let dudes like this guy get any words in, etc., etc.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 6 April 2006 21:46 (twenty years ago)

yeah it's kinda weird how their systems been breaking down lately (this is nothing compared to cleveland).

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 6 April 2006 21:48 (twenty years ago)

tell the class about cleveland, james.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 6 April 2006 21:49 (twenty years ago)

don't toy with me puny human

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 6 April 2006 21:56 (twenty years ago)

I heard this on NPR today. The guy was very polite and didn't come across as a kooky Windy-Cindy Sheehan type. I haven't heard W stammer like that for a long, long time.

andy --, Thursday, 6 April 2006 22:00 (twenty years ago)

i might be thinking of something else. it was in ohio and i'm pretty sure cleveland cuz i remember thinking 'wtf is he thinking going to cleveland', that if he wanted to stump in ohio surely cincinnatti or something was a smarter bet. the one with the apocalypse question among others. anyhow that + this + the kansas state 'brokeback' incident = we're at the point where these town hall meetings almost always stand a good chance of some 'normal' american that's able to get thru the filter (ie. not yr nude spock/sterling clover internet leftie 'milosevic was innocent' types) is gonna take the opportunity to either cast shame on the prez to his face or blatantly go 'watch me fuck with this retard' on him.

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 6 April 2006 22:06 (twenty years ago)

In defense of the president, this man really didn't have a question.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 6 April 2006 22:09 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha uh in defense of this man, even if he did the president wasn't going to be able to answer it.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 6 April 2006 22:10 (twenty years ago)

to be fair, many Dubya-booster comments at these things are not "questions" either. ("Mr. President I just wanted to tell you how proud I am that you pray blah blah blah...")

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 6 April 2006 22:16 (twenty years ago)

next guy that gets through should ask him why he gave permission for Libby to leak classified information for political purposes.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 6 April 2006 22:17 (twenty years ago)

It is simply amazing that this man could be so coddled and cozened as to rise to the position of POTUS and not know how to handle himself in a situation like this.

Aimless (Aimless), Thursday, 6 April 2006 22:26 (twenty years ago)

Although this event was invitation-only, it was not a party event. Invitees were chosen by some kind of local international affairs council and very much supposed to be "cross-sectional."

Does this mean we're not buying the line that part of the modified PR strategy of late has been to open up, oh so slightly, at these public meetings, to counter the criticism that he a) only listens to his inner circle on policy issues and b) isn't in touch with the real world and c) stage manages all public appearances to keep the media 'on message.'

Not that all of that isn't true, but if you can at least avoid the appearance that all the questions from the audience have been written by Rove...

"I would hope from time to time that you have the humility and grace to be ashamed of yourself."

Ha! Bush is just pleased with himself when he manages to string 2 or 3 sentences together. Have you seen the grin spread across his face when goes a bit without stumbling.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 6 April 2006 23:08 (twenty years ago)

This is why I always stop and watch kind of admiringly whenever I accidentally flip past the Prime Minister's Questions on C-SPAN -- it's kind of a treat to watch a leader who at least has the ability to respond persuasively to questions. (I wish there were some kind of highlights reel, though, because 70% of questions seem to be "What do you plan to do about the pressing need for this one traffic light in my constituency," to which the only possible answer is "I think that's a very important issue and well done for bringing it up, you may now return heroically to your constituency, safe in the knowledge that I have nothing whatsoever to do with that issue.")

nabiscothingy, Friday, 7 April 2006 00:38 (twenty years ago)

MAN BIG UPS CHARLOTTE. I love my hometown.

Local news had that clip, and one of a woman complaining as she left that he never answers any questions.

Did anybody see any clips from the actual speech, though? He was all riled up going on about how Saddam had the capabilities to build weapons of mass destruction...I was kind of shocked that he's still sticking to that.

Prime Minister's questions are also great because they are totally not afraid to chew him out.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Friday, 7 April 2006 00:45 (twenty years ago)

Man I wish Bush would stop saying things like "we're at war and this is what you do to protect your country"

YOU ARE NOT AT WAR, YOU GOT ATTACKED BY TERRORISTS. NO COUNTRY INVADED YOU OR DECLARED WAR AGAINST YOU.

That really gets me.

Huge big ups indeed to this gentleman, for saying what he did.

Trayce is not a guy! (trayce), Friday, 7 April 2006 00:56 (twenty years ago)

Agreed, but this is the best post so far:

"Well done that man but it says something bleak about our systems of government that this is a big deal."

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Friday, 7 April 2006 00:59 (twenty years ago)

I mean, it's no surprise that people don't like W. The story here seems to be that this was *allowed to happen*. SHOCK! Someone stood up and politely disagreed. Un-freakin'-believable.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Friday, 7 April 2006 01:02 (twenty years ago)

Yeah I agree that it is a sad state of things that this would be an issue.

REcently Ive been reading some old superman comic scans from WWII and man, propaganda from back then would fit right in now with many people not even questioning it.

Mickey (modestmickey), Friday, 7 April 2006 02:08 (twenty years ago)

THis just illustrates that it really doesn't matter what intelligent people say about the Bush administration. he will just blab on and not take anything personally and smile and say "thank you for your great question!" and his supporters will just more feverishly cling to their right wing ideals
