Or at least, when one does.

It's blank verse.

I hate to admit it, but there is something about the way he writes that kept me reading much longer than I should have. Seems like kind of a down to earth guy though, knows what he wants out of life and isn't ashamed of the route he's chosen. Gotta admire that. And I kinda like the sorta romantic image of his wish for being buried where he can listen to the highway sounds.

It is kinda funny to read though, since I went to a rural high school that lost a student to the carny every single summer when they rolled through town. They wouldn't show up for school in the fall and the next summer they'd be working a ride or a booth.

I remember a time, and it doesn't seem that long ago, everything was stick joints, there was no such thing as a "Roll Off".

Setup took for fucking ever it seemed. You had to put all the plumbing, sinks, electrical...etc in your joint once you got it framed.

Now everything is "Roll Offs", and the young guys bitch about that. I like to give them the old "I remember 18 hour teardowns" speech, and then tell them to "shut the fuck up" and quit whining.

It's like This American Life without the glasses. Pretty interesting reading.

i like the post on what to bring on the road!

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Thursday, 13 April 2006 16:32 (twenty years ago)

xpost - except it's Canada or England or something.

I like the post about what happens to old Carnies.

dave vire think (dave225.3), Thursday, 13 April 2006 16:38 (twenty years ago)

It's definitely not England. He actually writes fairly well, doesn't he?

chap who would dare to be a stone cold thug (chap), Thursday, 13 April 2006 16:43 (twenty years ago)

yes he does. when does he find the time to use a computer though?

dave vire think (dave225.3), Thursday, 13 April 2006 16:50 (twenty years ago)

Since these are all from the last month or so, I'm guessing he doen them during the off-season when he's not on the road. Seems like everything so far is just remembering seasons past, he mentions the upcoming season at one point.

That Carny blog is great. Now I want to be a Carny! I am going to flunk out of Spy School and sign up for Carny School.

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 21:48 (twenty years ago)

Dude, like you can't do both.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 21:55 (twenty years ago)

Now I would really like to see a movie about a spy posing as a carny for some reason, or a carny who gets recruited as a spy for some other reason. Somebody please make it happen!

What would be great would be film where, instead of a spy having to pretend to be a carny, a carny has to pretend to be a spy. I am imagining James Bond teaming up with MI5's man in Berlin, only for him to be wearing clown make-up and a tuxedo.
