Drinking my own wine at a restaurant: classic

Paying the money-grubbers for the right to do so: DUD

Considering the cost of being able to serve wine and the huge profit they make out of it, it's not entirely unfair though I love places where they don't go overboard. It often helps if you pour a taste for your waiter, especially if it's good stuff. Plumpjack doesn't (or didn't last time I was there) charge any corkage on wines bought form their wine store, which has an excellent selection.

THIS IS BRISTOL!

A couple who went out for a romantic meal were left stunned when they were berated by the restaurant's owner for ordering soft drinks instead of wine.

Considering the huge mark-up that most restaurants apply to their wine prices, I wouldn't begrudge a BYO place a small corkage fee.

However, BYO places that don't charge corkage are even more classic, obviously.

There's a huge mark-up on wine but places usually make a lot of money on liquor and a bar often half-supports the kitchen.

I wish I could bring my beer to bars.

I've brought a 12-pack to Sam Wo's in Chinatown and they didn't even blink. CLASSIC.

"What do you mean I can't smoke my bong at this table?!"

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 13 April 2006 20:23 (twenty years ago)

Come to Vancouver. They supply the bong, you fill it.

At my favorite Cuban place, you can bring your own wine and they'll make sangria, or bring rum and they'll make mojitos. Or you can just drink the wine by itself, and they won't charge you anything.

"I wish I could bring my beer to bars..."

I know an old skater buddy of mine that did this constantly. His "messenger bag" was always full or brews. His only fall was getting caught with a Mickey's Big Mouth, which few bars stock.

I was drunk and hanging out at a bar across the street from my house when I decided that I had beer in my fridge at home, so why pay for it at the bar? I excused myself and returned with several cans of Old Mil stashed in my pockets saving a grand total of five bucks or so.

There's posh.

Many (most?) curry houses in the UK will let you bring your own beer.

I've brought a 12-pack to Sam Wo's in Chinatown and they didn't even blink. CLASSIC.

I've done this in Japanese restaurants, too, hiding the 12-pack down in the "leg pit".

I got berated by the owner of a crappy red sauce Italian place in Fountain Valley because I brought my own wine. "What, the house wine here isn't good enough for you?! Get out!"

Oh yeah, he was selling the colored anti-freeze he called wine at $7 a glass.
