hmmm. Chevy for the "Fletch" movies, which off the top of my head seem way better than any vehicle Aykroyd ever tried to carry.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 14 April 2006 21:12 (twenty years ago)

(er I mean Fletch and the first Vacation movie)

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 14 April 2006 21:13 (twenty years ago)

aykroyd because he was great in Grosse Point Blank, was funnier on SNL...

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 14 April 2006 21:36 (twenty years ago)

dan aykroyd was in the blues brothers. and ghostbusters. and grosse pointe blank. therefore he wins.

Chevy makes me laugh my knackers off, whatever he's in.

Dogfight Giggle (noodle vague), Friday, 14 April 2006 21:40 (twenty years ago)

don't get me wrong. chevy chase is chortlesome. but ... y'know, he wasn't in ghostbusters. or the blues brothers. and those films were defining moments in my childhood. i love dan aykroyd like some kind of father figure and ... ach, i'm off to bed.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 14 April 2006 21:42 (twenty years ago)

Chevy Chase not being in Ghostbusters or Blues Brothers is a key reason why he wins.

Ich Haben Gepuken Like Ein Mutterfucken (noodle vague), Friday, 14 April 2006 21:45 (twenty years ago)

i refer the hon gentleman to the answer i gave a few moments ago on the other thread.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 14 April 2006 21:47 (twenty years ago)

Like, likewise. Get to bed.

Ich Haben Gepuken Like Ein Mutterfucken (noodle vague), Friday, 14 April 2006 21:48 (twenty years ago)

You Bank Holidayed out too?

Ich Haben Gepuken Like Ein Mutterfucken (noodle vague), Friday, 14 April 2006 21:49 (twenty years ago)

aykroyd, although chevy was a member of steely dan.

buck pwens (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 14 April 2006 21:50 (twenty years ago)

Chevy lies. You can see it in his eyes.

Ich Haben Gepuken Like Ein Mutterfucken (noodle vague), Friday, 14 April 2006 21:51 (twenty years ago)

Ackroyd's drunken santa grunt in Trading
Places > lots of stuff

tremendoid (tremendoid), Friday, 14 April 2006 22:26 (twenty years ago)

am i right in thinking these mean more to american audiences than brits. i mean aykroyd is the weak link in most of his films and chase is kind of funny but not really.

danny invincible (michael w.), Friday, 14 April 2006 22:33 (twenty years ago)

you have to grow up with these films in your pop-culture vocabulary, i think... part of the humor is in our familiarity with these guys and the type of movies we know them for.

buck pwens (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 14 April 2006 22:47 (twenty years ago)

not american, SNL=canadian conspiracy to make americans laff at dumb shit

i love Ackroyd's Jimmy Carter when the guy on acid calls and he talks him down.

shredding repis on the gnar gnar rad (chaki), Friday, 14 April 2006 23:12 (twenty years ago)

I was going to post why neither is any good anymore, but that's lame.

Chevy - Fletch, Vacation movies, Pres. Ford, Caddy Shack
Ackroyd - Elwood, Bassomatic 76, Jane you ignorant slut, Gross Pointe, Ghostbusters...

I think I gotta go with Ackroyd, but Chevy's good points are REALLY good. Fuck, this is hard. Kind of like choosing Graham Chapman v. John Cleese.

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Friday, 14 April 2006 23:18 (twenty years ago)

dan aykroyd was awesome as bob dole in that sketch from like 1988 - "my friend george bush is lying when he says that! i know it, you know it, he knows it, the american people know it, bob dole knows it..."

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Saturday, 15 April 2006 03:57 (twenty years ago)

Chevy, despite his flaws. Apparently, he's the biggest asshole in the world even in real life, but on screen it's delicious. Very removed and often not part of the movie he's in, but delicious all the same.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Saturday, 15 April 2006 04:05 (twenty years ago)

I've never been that into Chevy Chase. Aykroyd seems like one of the most underappreciated things about early SNL, and his testimony in the oral history is a lot more interesting. So, Dan.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Saturday, 15 April 2006 04:11 (twenty years ago)

Oh Chevy, every time. Except that one time.

Noel, Saturday, 15 April 2006 10:57 (twenty years ago)

dan aykroyd's not really a lead though.

of course, chevy was only an intermittent one, but its like comparing a striker to a midfielder. i would say aykroyd (for all the reasons noted above) was better as a 'character' than chase was as a lead.

i am not a nugget (stevie), Saturday, 15 April 2006 11:08 (twenty years ago)

Chase a minor talent, Aykroyd a brilliant one -- he could've been the US Sellers -- who pissed his away. Wait, that MAKES him the US Sellers!

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 15 April 2006 14:11 (twenty years ago)

Chase is a cunt. Aykroyd is brilliant. No contest.

Father Esteban Buttez (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Saturday, 15 April 2006 14:12 (twenty years ago)

Being a cunt is pretty much what makes Chevy Chase funny.

Mingus Realty (noodle vague), Saturday, 15 April 2006 14:13 (twenty years ago)

In this case, Chase is a unfunny cunt.

Father Esteban Buttez (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Saturday, 15 April 2006 14:15 (twenty years ago)

The one time I smoked pot with amateurist, he initiated an hour-long conversation about whether Chevy Chase is funny or not.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Saturday, 15 April 2006 14:22 (twenty years ago)

see, i think chase is funny, but its a smart aleck funny that is def an acquired taste.

aykroyd was such a fantastic character actor, so much devotion to the art of becoming a character... Fred Garvin Male Prostitute is so well observed. when you watch old SNLs he's definitely the most committed, most disciplined and most successful-at-their-art actor there.

i am not a nugget (stevie), Saturday, 15 April 2006 14:51 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but is that what you want in a comedian? I'm way more drawn to Chase's dry smart ass and Belushi's animalism.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Saturday, 15 April 2006 14:59 (twenty years ago)

Y'all are talking about flavours here when we should be talking quality.

Aaaaaand...Chase has no quality.

Father Esteban Buttez (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Saturday, 15 April 2006 15:01 (twenty years ago)

its like snl vs sctv i guess... and i skew way more snl, to be honest. and, yeah, (relative to surroundings) understated performance is less instantly 'funny' than belushi-esque 'eat a bowl of fuck' comedy, but just the thought of Fred Garvin or the dude who always gets cross-examined by Joan Face still makes me laugh harder than the thought of the samurai.

i am not a nugget (stevie), Saturday, 15 April 2006 15:02 (twenty years ago)

diffrent strokes.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Saturday, 15 April 2006 15:04 (twenty years ago)

Aaaaaand...Chase has no quality.

But you can't deny that he has a quality, whether you find it funny or not.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Saturday, 15 April 2006 15:05 (twenty years ago)

diffrent strokes.

totally... tho i am struggling to think of a non-update non-pratfall chase SNL moment that floats my boat...

i am not a nugget (stevie), Saturday, 15 April 2006 15:14 (twenty years ago)

Ackroyd for the win. He was in My Stepmother is an Alien.

not sure about pickles (Jacqui Pickles), Saturday, 15 April 2006 15:26 (twenty years ago)

Spy vs. Spy to thread! This is, in my view, a case of choosing between eating a cup of library paste and sitting for several hours facing a windowless corner.

has Dan A. ever rejected a script? ever?? I'd love to be his agent. of course, has anyone offered Chevy a script in the last 10 years??

timmy tannin (pompous), Saturday, 15 April 2006 18:24 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, i was gunna say, the Richard Pryor job interview sketch

oh yeah, the landshark bits, and the Ford/Carter debate one

otter vs. d-day

j blount (papa la bas), Saturday, 15 April 2006 19:00 (twenty years ago)

well, comparing Bill Murray to any of his then-costars on SNL is totally unfair, his career has been about 80 times better, and I'd argue he's funnier than any of them anyway.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Saturday, 15 April 2006 19:04 (twenty years ago)

BELUSHI

j blount (papa la bas), Saturday, 15 April 2006 19:09 (twenty years ago)

I prefer Murray by a few lengths, sorry James

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Saturday, 15 April 2006 19:11 (twenty years ago)

man as great as 'animal house' is anyhow and as much as i like thinking 'boone!' everytime i see peter riegert pop up somewhere i really woulda liked to have seen the chase (otter), murray (boone), aykroyd (d-day) animal house. brian doyle-murray was gonna be in it (my guess is as hoover? definitely seems a brian-doyle murray type role), no idea why he isn't.

j blount (papa la bas), Saturday, 15 April 2006 19:12 (twenty years ago)

matos you've read the tom shales book right?

j blount (papa la bas), Saturday, 15 April 2006 19:13 (twenty years ago)

of course; referred to it upthread

"has anyone offered Chevy a script in the last 10 years??"

He was offered the kevin spacey role in American Beauty

could've been, Sunday, 16 April 2006 19:18 (twenty years ago)

Since dan never played drums with becker and fagen, chevy wins easy.
