Whatever happened to the popular front, Reg?

He's over there.

I love Graham Chapman. He and Idle are(were) my favourite Pythons.

"Are you the Judean People's Front?"

"Fuck off!"

"What?"

"Judean People's Front. We're the People's Front of Judea! Judean People's Front. Cawk."

"Wankers!"

"Can I...join your group?"

"No. Piss off."

I suspect Graham was a lot more fun to know, though more demanding as well as his alcoholism took over.

His 'A Liar's Autobiography' is uneven, but mostly great. Some quite entertaining potshots at fellow Pythons, such as his theory that John Cleese was at heart a unconsciously repressed homosexual attracted to Michael Palin.

Sample extract:

"On my way past the reception desk I said, 'Good grief, there's no one to go to bed with...Where are all the young men round here? This is absolutely dreadful.' I went to my room and fell drunkenly onto the bed alone.

I woke up at 5 o'clock in the morning to find the nightporter in bed with me, nude. He wasn't my choice of person, but under the right circumstances he was welcome. He had let himself in with a pass key, and faithful to the hotelier's code, put customer satisfaction first."

Bless 'em both. But both sounded like they'd have been/are hard to live with.

Cleese gets bonus points for doing the Dead Parrot sketch at Graham's funeral.

But I can't really decide.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Saturday, 15 April 2006 14:01 (twenty years ago)

Chapman does give a lovely performance in Brian. Very nuanced, very sympathetic. He was on the wagon at the time, as I understand it.

chapman was probably the one who could have been the best actor (except for may palin). and maybe wouldn't have turned into a commerical whore like cleese. so he wins.

Ugly linking, but you get the idea.
