I think it's a matter of convenience. The scent of folks who've been on a boat for two months is startlingly easy to synthesize in a non a/c movie theatre.

I was thinking about which beloved movies would no longer be so beloved if corresponding smells were mandatory and I'm thinking Shawshank Redemption would finally be unredeemed:
