Women who read porn in the office

Close relative to Patrick Bateman's secretary...

What's the deal with frumpy (sorry, I can't think of any better word - 'unprepossessing'?) middle-aged women who leave books like 'Orgy of Immoral Pleasures' on their desks? You know, those paperbacks with black-&-white pictures of somebody all trussed in horsey accessories on the cover. Not that I object to people reading them, but it's a bit weird to display it ostentatiously, isn't it?

Also, isn't that technically 'harassment'? Guys would get sacked for reading skin mags.

dave q, Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You shoudl not only be sacked but locked in jail for READING skin mags.

what are oyu doing in ally's office?

goeff, Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

We don't have middle aged frumpy women in my office, we're almost all entirely very glamourous young women hired entirely for looks. But one of them does keep slightly inappropriate 'train books' on her desk.

"Train books"??

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 31 January 2004 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't mind people at work who do this. Any time one of them annoys me I just think to myself they read porn at work. Not that they'd admit it.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 31 January 2004 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't understand what this thread is upset about. Is it because they are women that reading porn is remarkable or is it because it's at work (its ok if they keep it locked away etc) or is it just another dig at porn?

it's a bit weird to display it ostentatiously, isn't it?

What's ostentatious about leaving a book on your desk? If it was a book about Michael Jackson it wouldn't be ostentatious would it? So, the implication is that it is ostentatious to leave porn lying around. In other words, porn (or porn for women, or porn at work) should be kept hidden.

run it off (run it off), Saturday, 31 January 2004 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not a matter of whether or not it should be hidden, it's the irony that it isn't hidden, when other variations on the theme most likely would be (or at least considered thoroughly distasteful).

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 31 January 2004 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

so its a gender problem - women don't hide theirs but expect men to hide theirs?

run it off (run it off), Saturday, 31 January 2004 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

well to make it sound like less of a girls against boys thing... societal norms consider visual erotica to be vulgar, but Harlequin romance novel deals, though similar in purpose, are acceptable.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 31 January 2004 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe its because porn for men is part of the problem and porn for women is part of the solution?

run it off (run it off), Saturday, 31 January 2004 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

nah. A woman wouldn't get away with reading Playgirl at work and I could totally have a copy of Henry Miller's The Rosy Crucifixion at my desk if I wanted to.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 31 January 2004 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe that's just your workplace?

run it off (run it off), Saturday, 31 January 2004 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd assume that kind of standard is held at most "offices."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 31 January 2004 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

why would you assume that? I'd assume that their are lots of different styles of office. My office (I work at a University) wouldn't be bothered by any of this stuff.

Whatever gets you through the day.

It is much better than having a couple of golf clubs crossed like medieval swords on the wall.

Men don't have a mattress to keep their porn under at work.

earlnash, Sunday, 1 February 2004 02:19 (twenty-two years ago)

hahah at work I hid Porno by Irvine Welsh at the bottom of my bag so my coworkers wouldn't think I was a perv. but they'd already seen my Velvet Underground album so it was too late

Pious Twin (abennett), Sunday, 1 February 2004 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Run It Off, are you seriously saying you could look at porn at your desk and get no come-back? Try it tomorrow then.

mei (mei), Sunday, 1 February 2004 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm saying I could leave something on my desk without anyone thinking I was being ostentatious. I don't think reading porn at your desk when you should be working is acceptable, but leaving your literature (of any type, except maybe the Conservative manifesto) on your desk is certainly ok.

At the library, things are a bit different, thus:

Me talking with female coworker friend. Porno sitting on side shelf waiting to be refiled along with other books. Supervisor comes along and flips through said text.

Female coworker friend to supervisor: "It's not what you think."
