hey there, there was a big puff piece in Time Out for this place the other day. kerazee 50s girls in roller skates, cabaret, old working men, glamour, cake, tea dances, etc etc.
sounds burlesque, exciting, trendy, poss obnoxious?

anyone been? is it good? is it all over now time out have jizzed over it?

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 10:57 (twenty years ago)

my idiot hipster friend loves it.

Is this where Go Kart Mozart are playing?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 11:00 (twenty years ago)

WHEN???????

Went there for friend's birthday and to see a cabaret night but weather outside so cold and miserable that it entered the venue. Also mean/stingy drink mixing for the price and WTF it's a WMC.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 11:03 (twenty years ago)

went to some indie night there a few weeks back. i like the place as a venue although the bar is a bit rubbish, tho retains some sort of charm perhaps. is there a basement room as well?

the Time Out seemed deliberately (desperately?) OTT based on my experience. but still def. a good place for events (if you can get 100+ people).

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 11:10 (twenty years ago)

went there to see herman dune a year or two ago, loved it. gorgeous olde tyme civilised feel, cheapo drinks, decent sound, good for dancin'.

emsk ( emsk), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 11:11 (twenty years ago)

Yeah that indie night had so little atmosphere it was kind of embarassing but I've heard the burlesque thing is a lot of fun. I quite like the venue though, it's kind of shabby in a friendly way and would be totally unpretentious if it wasn't for the GIANT HEART OF RED LIGHT BULBS on the stage.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 11:13 (twenty years ago)

a working mens club CAN'T be pretentious...until the hipsters turn up. the heart is fab tho.

Yeah that indie night had so little atmosphere

was really surprised by how much busier the place had got by 11pm tho.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 11:16 (twenty years ago)

Indie nights at working mens clubs? What, so some old bloke gets back from the steel works then spends the evening dancing to Bloc Party?

Appologies for lazy stereotypes.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 11:19 (twenty years ago)

People who've been to Glasgow, is Bethnal Green WMC much like the Woodside Social Club?

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 11:22 (twenty years ago)

they have different nights, no?

Went there for friend's birthday and to see a cabaret night but weather outside so cold and miserable that it entered the venue. Also mean/stingy drink mixing for the price and WTF it's a WMC.

haha, if only the cold and miserable weather had entered the venue when i was there. it was SO WARM.

i went to this night once and got given dance lessons! and another night was also fun but i was well drunk so can't remember a thing.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 11:23 (twenty years ago)

I've been to Woodside Social Club but not to Bethanal Green WMC

TS: Mick Ralphs vs. Ariel Bender (Dada), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 11:26 (twenty years ago)

BGWMC is a little bit bigger than woodside i think (maybe similiar in terms of floor space but it has a much higher roof!) and is more lit up. cheap drinks!

the entrance was more akin to the RAFA place i think than the woodside, as you have to go to a landing and then go upstairs to the actual bit. (although i dunno whether it has the old man bar bit like the RAFA place where you can get chatted up by old men)

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 11:26 (twenty years ago)

their amplifiers were way too loud for the place though.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 11:27 (twenty years ago)

I went to Tapestry at the St Aloysius Working Men's Club in Euston a few weeks ago and it was a quite odd juxtaposition - the hipsters had the main hall while the old Irish men mostly retained control of the small bar room. Little friction, apart from when an old guy would give the secret signal to the barmaid which meant he instantly got served ahead of 15 asymetric haircuts who had been queuing for half an hour. I approved.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 11:28 (twenty years ago)

A bit like the old Buff Club in Glasgow perhaps?

TS: Mick Ralphs vs. Ariel Bender (Dada), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 11:29 (twenty years ago)

Blimey, that is quite soon.

Maybe it is on the BGWMC website?

Bernard's Summer Girlfriend (kate), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 11:59 (twenty years ago)

I spent New Year's Eve at BGWC. I had a really good time. I've also been to some good gigs there and Marianna informs me that Viva Cake is a great night out.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 12:02 (twenty years ago)

WMC/"political" clubs* are getting overrun with hipsters and/or student nationwide it seems. is this a good or bad thing? i wonder how the 3 i know of in this state in leeds benefit from a revival in patronage/interest, despite the newcomers being far from the original clientele.

for what its worth, i love going to Brudenells, Hyde Park social and the Woodhouse Liberal club in leeds. Whether i am contributing to their rebirth or their decline im not sure. im not even sure whether they ever were in decline, i suppose i assumed that this sort of institution would generally be suffering from falling numbers etc

i went past this the other, apparently where they filmed the full monty

http://www.sheffieldontheinternet.co.uk/shiregrn.jpg

as for bethnal green, it sounds pretty fun all the same. i principally want to go cos this girl i fancy wants to. what is a tea dance and can i dance it?

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 12:03 (twenty years ago)

a working mens club CAN'T be pretentious...until the hipsters turn up.

is this the east lunnun version of williamsburg hipsters and their pbr?

25 yr old slacker cokehead (Enrique), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 12:05 (twenty years ago)

Oh so fucking shoot me for wanting to go out and not have to pay over four quid for a drink.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 12:37 (twenty years ago)

That came out in type looking a lot more harsh than it sounded in my head.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 12:38 (twenty years ago)

yeah cheap drinks are another bonus... i wonder if BGWMC and others will start raising prices to reflect new markets?

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 12:39 (twenty years ago)

Will indie values soon spread among "working men".

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 12:40 (twenty years ago)

i thought viva cake would be sexier than it was.

rtcotm (mwah), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 13:14 (twenty years ago)

women shouldn't have to pay for drinks, in working men's clubs.

i love going to Brudenells, Hyde Park social and the Woodhouse Liberal club in leeds. Whether i am contributing to their rebirth or their decline im not sure. im not even sure whether they ever were in decline

ha, the brudenell and hyde park social club have had significant non-wmc traffic for years

i have never been to bethnal green working mens club. i would like to go, it sounds good. it seems you have all been though, perhaps i was away that day.

as a matter of interest G, how many years? the hyde park social in particular seems furthest away from its origins (imagined?)... but in leeds its students not hipsters that have moved in.

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 13:41 (twenty years ago)

brudenell 10 years+, dunno about hyde park

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 13:59 (twenty years ago)

There are two bars in the Bethnal Green Working Mens Club, and the people on the door use a secret filtering device to direct people either upstairs (Viva Cake/Jack & Ginger/Toot Sweet etc) or downstairs ("proper" working men's club type stuff). I always wish I could go downstairs.

James Ward (jamesmichaelward), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 15:02 (twenty years ago)

is there a website? it seems hard to find out what is on there and when.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 15:05 (twenty years ago)

and the people on the door use a secret filtering device to direct people either upstairs

is the device the old lady/robot who tells you "UPSTAIRS" repeatedly as soon as you walk through the main door?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 15:20 (twenty years ago)

no it's either 'straight ahead, nathan' or 'downstairs, proley'

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 15:54 (twenty years ago)

Kate: the cheese phobia is 100 per cent ACCURATE. When L used to visit N's flat to see flatmate V, N used to creep around the flat like Dangermouse acting like he was hiding bits of cheddar to give L The Fear when he arrived. This was purely to wind up V, of course. Also once he treated me to lunch when we were working on this bit of nonsense together (please don't ask as fanboy riots often offend) on the condition that cheese was not to be ordered.

Again: Lawrence Hayward, nice. Can't wait to see this, along with 50 punters and the entire Creation/Pulp/Windsor network on the guest list partying like it's 1991.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 21:19 (twenty years ago)

went there to see herman dune a year or two ago, loved it. gorgeous olde tyme civilised feel, cheapo drinks, decent sound, good for dancin'.

i was at that, also. one of the best gigs i've been to in ages, as it goes, and not at all hurt by the fact that iirc we had to buy raffle tickets which we then exchanged for beer! ah lovely.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 23:33 (twenty years ago)

Is there a Windsor network? Can I join?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 06:40 (twenty years ago)

PJ, what I mean is there was a bunch of folks from Windsor like S. Cracknell, A. Weatherall and connected to anyone to do with Heavenly Records...

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 07:28 (twenty years ago)

i love going to Brudenells, Hyde Park social and the Woodhouse Liberal club in leeds. Whether i am contributing to their rebirth or their decline im not sure. im not even sure whether they ever were in decline

Well, the Brudenell pretty much only exists now because of the gig room - from what I've seen the bar has both lost most of its 'old-school' customers and failed to attract the hipster/student contingent, which is a shame as it's actually a lovely place to go and drink of an evening. Hmm, hang on, maybe that's WHY it's a lovely place to drink. Anyway, the point is that whilst I know little about the others, I say, go to the Brudenell, give them your money. They need it.

emil.y (emil.y), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 10:31 (twenty years ago)

brudenell fap?

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 11:06 (twenty years ago)

yeh for sure

but not when theres a D'n'b/noize/punk gig there thats insanely loud. but its a great place to put things on, if a little big. the woodhouse liberal is even bigger but it seems to get full well enough.
