I want a rad projector for video gaming, movies, TV, computer stuff, etc. I don't know shit about resolution or any of that jazz. I'd like composite, either VGA or DVI and maybe SVideo.

What do you reccomend for an affordable, reasonable solution? DISCUS!

i cannot offer any big help, except be real careful if you're buying used, paricularly with used bulb life. new bulb = $$$

also, a projector for video games might not be cost effective, as i think many bulbs top out at 2000 hours.

jinx hijinks (sanskrit), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 20:29 (twenty years ago)

new bulbs are like $250 right?

Fight the Real Enemy -- Tasti D-Lite (ex machina), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 20:39 (twenty years ago)

Only at the very low end. Most are ~$350. Here's a price list.

A friend of mine has a DLP projector (I think a Canon) that is great for movies, but he doesn't do any gaming. It's got enough contrast and color depth that I can imagine it would be pretty great though.

Which brands are rub?

At a previous job we had several of the Sharp P10s that were ceiling mounted and then some portable Epson PowerLites. Best thing I can say about them is that they worked well and stood up to being kicked around by teachers, students, etc...

Hey so I've got a projector that I use mostly for watching movies, but I'd really like to watch some World Cup on it. Unfortunately I can't get any channels over 30 to play through the projector. We have cable and it's hooked directly to a VCR then through the VCR to the projector. Channels 2-30 work great, but everything over that looks like no signal.
I tried a different VCR (mine's kinda busted), but I got the same problem.
Any ideas what's going wrong here? ESPN/ESPN2 are channels 38-39. Soooo agonizingly close.

wmlynch (wlynch), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 03:26 (nineteen years ago)

The signal is PAL because only British people care about World Cup. You need a PAL/NTSC projector.

lord pooperton (ex machina), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 03:29 (nineteen years ago)

what kind of wire do you use to connect the VCR to the projector?

and also can you watch the world cup channel on a normal TV thorugh the VCR?

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 06:36 (nineteen years ago)

It's a long rca video cable. The channels above 30 work fine when the VCR is connected to a TV. I thought at first that the signal was getting scrambled in the VCR but I guess not.

wmlynch (wlynch), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 13:42 (nineteen years ago)

Is the cable feed going straight to the VCR? Or do you have a cable box? There used to be some kind of difference between high channels & low, I think. If you are changing the channel on a cable box and going through a VCR always set to channel 3, then I have no answer. If you are changing the channel through the VCR, then I still have no answer, but the problem makes more sense.

so this may be a real longshot, but try daisy chaining two VCRs together in front of the projector. And try connecting them with RCA cables and then with Coax. See if either setup makes a difference.

DAVE, for #1 Hits of yesterday and today! (dave225.3), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 13:51 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, I was wrong about the TV. We're feeding the cable directly into the TV and not through the VCR. We don't have a cable box, so this is a direct coaxial feed.
There's a difference in the actual signals for channels above 30?

wmlynch (wlynch), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

I have a vague recollection that there was once .. I could be wrong - I remember old VCRs having some weird business going on - but maybe it was a limitation of the hardware at that time.... ?
