????, Thursday, 20 April 2006 09:58 (nineteen years ago)

in the early days of this site it was even worse because it wouldn't let you close your browser window or do anything other than go on this site. it also melted all the circuits in your pc meaning that you simply COULDN'T switch it off. This has caused a lot of problems for people and I understand the moderators are still trying to iron out a few bugs so although you can switch your computer off, it won't come back on again so please please please be careful as a lot of my friends have lost their computers through going on this site.

I HATE this site.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 20 April 2006 09:58 (nineteen years ago)

ha ha yes it is still here how long ago did u come here??.. i might come back one day if i get extremely bored and have nothing else on the planet to do... yes there is a way out im not gulable anymore

We haven't helped her with her assignment yet. Why should the drinking age be raised in Australia, chaps?

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 20 April 2006 10:48 (nineteen years ago)

Because their lager tastes like piss?

C J (C J), Thursday, 20 April 2006 10:48 (nineteen years ago)

say goodnight allyce

dr lulu (dr lulu), Thursday, 20 April 2006 10:52 (nineteen years ago)

nae fucker drinks fosters here

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Thursday, 20 April 2006 10:52 (nineteen years ago)

I was trying to help you earlier Allyce.

Ask yourself:

What is the current drinking age?
What are they thinking of raising it to?
Who is in favour of raising the age limit?
Why do they want to raise it?
What are the limits in other countries and how do they maintain these laws?
What do YOU think they should do? Why?
Do you think that raising the drinking age would really solve a few problems?

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 20 April 2006 10:53 (nineteen years ago)

No, I live in the UK. I worked in Aus for a couple of years though.

Yes, we'll help you Allyce!

C J (C J), Thursday, 20 April 2006 10:53 (nineteen years ago)

ok lol ha ha goodnight boys ... u are gonna pay me out when i leave tho

????, Thursday, 20 April 2006 10:54 (nineteen years ago)

Also, what will your opponents (who rpesumably are arguing for the lowering of the legal age) use as their arguments, and can you rebuff them?

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 20 April 2006 10:55 (nineteen years ago)

its not a debate tho

????, Thursday, 20 April 2006 10:56 (nineteen years ago)

The thing is, it's a difficult argument to put. Surely raising the legal drinking age will only make more teenagers try and drink illegally, so it's not going to stop the problem of teen drunkenness. Are there any figures published to compare numbers of teen deaths from, say, alcohol poisoning or booze-related accidents in countries with a drinking age of 18 and those (such as the USA) with a drinking age of 21?

And are there cultural differences, too - i.e. in France where kids are often given a glass of wine (even watered-down) with their meals from a young age - do they have significantly higher problems with teenage alcoholism or illness? It might be interesting to know.

C J (C J), Thursday, 20 April 2006 10:57 (nineteen years ago)

umm ok can you just give me topics to research bcoz im not gonna rememba nethin

Facts & Figures on Drinking in Australia

• In 1998, 3,271 deaths were attributable to the consumption of alcohol.

• The number of hospital episodes attributable to alcohol consumption in 1998 was 43,032.

• Beer was the most widely consumed alcoholic beverage, followed by wine and spirits. Australia was ranked 19th in 1998 in terms of per capita consumption of alcohol.

• From the National Drug Strategy Household Survey in 1998, 59% of respondents aged 14 years and over were regular drinkers, with 10% reporting drinking every day and 13% drinking 4-6 days per week. Although 56% of respondents correctly identified low-risk levels of drinking for males and 47% for females, at least 7% of males and 4% of females reported drinking at hazardous or harmful levels.

• In 1998, Australia ranked 19th in the world in terms of per capita consumption of pure alcohol with 7.6 L per person. Australia was the 9th highest ranked country for beer consumption (94.5 L per person) in 1998. For the consumption of wine and spirits, Australia ranked 18th and 35th, respectively.

• In the 1998 National Drug Strategy Household Survey, 10% of respondents reported drinking every day, while a further 13% reported drinking 4-6 days per week. Approximately 20% of the population reported drinking less than one day in a month.

• The results from the 1998 National Drug Strategy Household Survey show that 59% of males were current regular drinkers (drink at least weekly), which is considerably higher than their female counterparts (38%). In contrast, there was a higher prevalence of occasional drinking in females (39%) than in males (25%).

• Alcohol is the second major cause of drug-related deaths. The ACT has the highest proportion of regular drinkers (at least once a week) at 57%, with Tasmania the lowest at 46%.

• More than 9 out of 10 people who usually drank three or more drinks in one session said they limited the number of drinks in an evening - or refused an alcoholic drink when they did not want it.

• In 1997, 18,200 deaths, or 80% of all drug-related deaths, were attributed to tobacco use. About 3,700 deaths were attributed to excessive use of alcohol. Illicit drug use is associated with about 1,000 deaths a year.

• Alcohol abuse costs about $145 million in healthcare costs and $770 million in road accident costs every year.

• One in five men supports an increase in the price of alcohol as a measure to reduce consumption.

• One in three men supports a ban on alcohol sponsorships of sporting events.

• About 90% of the population want tougher penalties for drink-driving.

• At least 8% of males and 4% of females (aged 14 years and above) are drinking at hazardous or harmful levels.

• 39% of alcohol in 1998 was consumed at levels that posed health risks in the long term.

• Most (51%) of the alcohol consumed in Australia in 1998 posed short-term health risks to the drinker.

• In 1998, 9% of both male and female drinkers were at medium or high risk of long-term health problems due to alcohol (eg. liver disease).

• In 1998, 46% of male and 32.5% of female drinkers were at risk of short-term harm from drinking (eg. injury) at least once a month.

• People aged below 25 years have the riskiest drinking patterns (1998).

• Alcohol is the most widely used psychoactive, or mood-changing, recreational drug in Australia.

• 39% of alcohol consumption puts drinkers at risk of chronic harm, while 51% of consumption puts them at risk of acute harm, by exceeding new National Drinking Guidelines.

• 67% of alcohol consumed in Australia puts the drinker at risk of acute and/or chronic harm.

• Most alcohol-related deaths among men are due to alcoholism and alcoholic liver disease. Alcohol-related cancer is the next highest cause.

• Most alcohol-related deaths in Australian women are from alcohol-related cancer. Breast cancer accounts for more than half of these deaths, while oesophageal and liver cancer account for 24% and 13% respectively.

• High risk alcohol consumption currently causes over 400 road deaths and 7,700 serious road injuries requiring hospitalisation a year, at an estimated cost to the community of over $1.34 billion. 52% of fatal and hospitalised road injuries involve people aged between 15 and 24 years, while a further 23% involve 25 to 34 year olds. Men account for around 72% of alcohol-related serious road injuries and deaths.

• For the combined alcohol-related violence measure (that is, any of physical, verbal, or being put in fear), persons aged 20-24 years were by far at the highest risk. More than 1 in 2 persons in this age group were victimised in the previous year.

• According to the 1995 National Drug Strategy Household Survey, 22% of males and 18% of females aged 14-19 were regular drinkers, consuming alcohol at least once a week. In 1998, this had increased to 33% and 27% respectively. This is of particular concern when over half of this age group are binge drinking, making them susceptible to a number of harms including physical violence, sexual vulnerability and accidents.
