What Would Happen If Nicotine Was Criminalised?

Would all smokers eventually stop smoking cos there was no real point in continuing? Would the crime rate rise because loads of people would go batshit-crazy from simultaneous withdrawals?
I haven't had a cig in three months and it's fuckin' killing me. Still. That shit is pure evil.
