Whatever happened to ninjas?

Back in the eighties ninjas were hugely popular: I remember at the local video store there was a shelf full of ninja movies only, and of course there was stuff like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the Last Ninja games, etc. But as the nineties rolled on ninjas faded away. Where did they come from originally, and what happened with them? Is there still an underground ninja culture? Will there ever be a ninja revival?

They were all abducted by The Greys. The ensuing war between the two wiped out both factions which is why you never hear about UFOs anymore either.

I'm trying to work Mike Smith into this somehow.

this will change; ninjas and aliens go through waves of popularity. right now the survivors of the 1998 ninja/ET battles are staging their comeback tour. BY JOINING FORCES.

Yeah, the Ninja revival already happened. You missed it. See also realultimatepower.net. (which probably appeared about the same time as ninja burger).

Yeah, the Ninja revival already happened. You missed it.

I meant a proper revival, not just some Internet sites.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 23 April 2006 07:41 (twenty years ago)

And samurais were totally different from ninjas! They were an earlier fad, and most samurai films were actually made in Japan. Also, the tagline of one of those ninja movies from my childhood was, "Even the samurais feared the ninjas".

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 23 April 2006 07:42 (twenty years ago)

Yeahman, Samurais are the equivalent of knights in old europe. A Ninja is a stealth assasin. (Hey you probably already all know this but I wasn't sure from the last few answers!)

Oh man, I can totally update my "21st century so far" list:

1. Robot hegemony
2. Monkey comeback
3. Re-established robot hegemony
4. Zombie revolution (zombies in, robots out)
5. Failed undercurrent of pirate
6. Wizard remains confined to child-fan ghetto
7. Ninja resurgence
8. Skanks
9. Cowboys
10. SPARTANS (I totally failed to predict this)

New predictions:

1. Skank oversaturation
2. Marines
3. Vikings (with a bullet)
4. Bike cops
5. Ghost comeback
6. Skank backlash

Dead predictions:

1. Brief ninja dominance (TMNT will kill it)
2. Ill-advised mummy craze (will remind people of Brendan Fraser)
3. Bikers (thanks, Wild Hogs)

Classics holding strong:

1. Douchebags

time was you could be an ancient japanese assassin. now the europhiles have literally pranced on the very idea in high heels.

Local Garda, Monday, 25 August 2008 21:52 (seventeen years ago)

Police said they were on their way to deliver warning letters to drug dealers and drug users urging them to stop their "impure" activities.

The letters said those who persisted would be stopped with "justified yet, merciful force."

See, Jesse says he and Tadeusz are modern day ninjas ... "Shinobi warriors" to be exact.

And that they were on a mission to get dealers to stop selling after a friend of theirs recently got caught up in drug use.

"To tell drug dealers and users to maybe back off the drugs," Jesse said. "It screws up people's lives."

He said they planned on dropping off five letters to drug dealers in the area, saying "You have committed passing on your impurity upon innocent brothers and sisters."
