bag o' donuts

The nickname of one of my best friends from college was "Bag o' Donuts" (or "Bag o'Dees"). He never told me how he got the nickname or what it meant. And no-one I've ever asked ever knew what "bag o' donuts" means. So I'm opening this question to the board in general, and the Italian-Americans in particular (Mr. Raposa? Ms. Kearney?) Since turnaround is fair play, if there's anything that puzzles you about Polish-American culture, ask away :-)

David Raposa, Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Unless, perhaps, it's a euphamism for "testicles".

In one of my less honourable moments, I once referred to an oddly shaped lass as a "sack of potatoes". Hope this helps.

I have no idea, I should ask my mom. It could have been a name from childhood, that's pretty common - I have a bunch of cousins and uncles with weird names - one is called "Beef". His brother is "Bumba".

On second thought, this sounded like an old people's thing, like something my grandfather would say, so I searched Google and found a lot of things like, "Joey Bag 'O Donuts". Who knows - maybe old Italian people wouldn't even know. It could just mean that he is (or was) fat.

That's a lot of nuts.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It doesn't really mean much of anything, I don't think. It's just a stupid saying, I think they're right that loads of old people said it and now some people still say it.

I'd like to know if it's true what they say about Polish men.

Unless you have krispykremism, testicles look nothing like doughnuts.

But prostates do. Maybe "bag o donuts" is a poignant yet ironic euphemism for the emotional baggage that comes with prostate cancer.
