Hissing cat.

My cat, Thomas, who is an elderly 13 years has always been a bit nouty whenever he is asked to move, from knees, cushions, chairs etc but lately there has been an unwelcome development.

Just recently, when politely requested to move (we always use manners with our cats) He has taken to, first mewing and pawing, then, totally out of character, getting onto his tiptoes and hissing in a sinister manner. He can actually be quite intimidating which, after a lifetime of being soft as anything, even letting small children poke and prod him without seeming to get annoyed is an unwelcome and quite disturbing development.

Anyone else have/had a cat that does this? is it just his age? can I do ANYTHING about it?

he could just be getting old and cranky.

How do you ask him to move? Does it involve gentle pushing? Maybe he has arthritis or something and moving hurts him.

Kick it in the arse. That'll shut that cat up.

you're his property. you need to assert yourself - just give him a little swat when he misbehaves. not enough to hurt, just enough to show him that you're not to be messed with. he'll get the point and won't be upset with you. this isn't mean, it's cat communication.

case in point: when i was about 16 my family got a new cat. a cute, energetic, affectionate all black guy that we named ali. he we a charming cat - only sometimes when being petted he would go psycho and bite, sometimes hard enough to break the skin. me and my dad started swatting him when he did it. my step-mother didn't, because she thought it was mean. ali stopped biting me and my dad and kept abusing her. he was still affectionate with us, just no biting.

take him to the vet - a lot of cats' mood or behaviour changes can be early signs of curable health problems.

That goddam mouse Jerry isn't really helping his welfare, ya know.

If by "politely requested to move" you mean that you're picking him up or generally applying repeated pressure to the same part of his body, it may be that he has a recent injury or infection that is hurting him when you try to move him. On the other hand, maybe it's just dementia setting in.

To the vet. Straight away. Probably arthritus, but it might be more serious.

Appreciate everybodys advice. I will make an appointment for the vets tomorrow. Although he doesn't appear to have lost any of his zest or springiness, I should get him checked out anyway.

Never push him as such. In the past a gentle push with slightly more pressure than a stroke would be enough. maybe he just thinks he's paid his dues and OWNS certain parts of the house now.

He's snoozing away on my bed and I haven't tried to move him.

On the downside, how depressing is it when a loved cat starts to show its age? He still seems happy and is his usual talkative, purry self most of the time. I wouldn't put him out at night if he preferred to stay put but most nights, even rainy ones, he's at the back door 10 seconds after the TV/Hi-Fi is turned off.

Once again, thanks to those who offered advice.

Try treating him too. If he won't move for a push, he might move for chicken. Of course, you'll have to reduce his food in his dish to compensate, but if he's old and it's sore for him to move around, at least make it worth his while.

Hope he's okay.

Thanks Accent. He's certainly ok today. curled up at the bottom of my bed and purring even when he doesn't think anyone is watching.

I treat him all the time but especially at the moment cos as well as being old,he's special.
