to colonize again

Since the imperialism, the administration/the governance in many non-western countries (especially Africa) are pretty much crap, to the point that some people doubt they can even rise out of there crappiness. Centuries of opression and such has pretty much turn many of these countries into poor slums with grim futures. The UN tries to help when it can, sending troops to take care of rebel attacks and civil wars, food and financial aid and other such things. But as we realize, it's not really working at all. It's like that expression about teaching a man how to fish or giving him fish to eat. Basically, once in a while we give these people fish, but they never learn how to fish.

People have always had negative opinions about the imperialism, mainly because it consisted of the Western countries opressing and taking advantage of their colonies. An unfair balance was created, and now the Western world wants to make things right without putting too much effort or risk in it. Well, my friend brought up the idea that instead of sending food and money and soldiers that in the long run really have no effect, the western world should retake their colonies and set things right themselves. Retake control of the governments, set the societies on the right path and make sure they don't falter until they can take care of themselves.

Just throwing it out there...

Noyb, your friend is insane. Imperialism fucked up the colonised countries bigtime, and I seriously doubt that our taking up the White Man's Burden again will do them any good.

Great idea. It's worked so well for Iraq!

Awesome idea! Except the giving back part. I think the western nations have grown weaker since there is no longer any expansion of the empires.

So yes! Let us retake our colonies in Africa. Heck, India too. And instead of re-carving the old borders and owners, everybody gets to take again! So the mighty US can get in on some Africa.

It would be awesome.

Rome should get Gaul, Britain and North Africa back.

jz, Tuesday, 25 April 2006 14:31 (twenty years ago)

But Rome didn't rule all of Britain! Altogether now, "Oh Flower of Scotland/ when will we see your like again..."

Noyb, your friend has a touching faith in human nature.

My Third World Studies professor once told there actually are some genuine political thinkers and academics who've proposed this idea.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 18:16 (twenty years ago)

"Third World Studies"

JW (ex machina), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 18:20 (twenty years ago)

When they grow up, will we suffer from empty-nest syndrome, or will they keep bringing their laundry back, eventually squatting in our basement, eating into our retirement funds and generally annoying us?

This theory is absurd but if it gains any credence, Zimbabwe is probably a good place to begin. That place is going to hell in the proverbial handcart.

Tuomas, are there THIRD WORLD STUDIES majors???!??

JW (ex machina), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 22:32 (twenty years ago)

Using up country's natural resources + clearing off and leaving unstable/undemocratic government = Gosh They Can't Look After Themselves, Can They?

America still has Hawaii! The others are radioactive, and unsuitable. But the Canal Zone... hmmm....

andy --, Tuesday, 25 April 2006 22:37 (twenty years ago)

Niall Ferguson doesn't write shit for free, does he?

Meanwhile, the Australians have their own example to deal with.
