free koan day (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 19:29 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I was just gonna say "JBR to thread" but didn't want to be flip!

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 19:31 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I knew JBR would show. First person I thought of when I read the news!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 19:34 (twenty years ago)

good grief, i didn't even know she was still alive. i think i assumed she was already dead by the time i heard of her. anyway, a great mind and a great writer too. RIP.

bookstores tend to have very paltry offerings in the urban theory and planning disciplines, and it says something that death and life is one of the only books that regularly make it onto the shelves of the regular squaresville stores. hilariously, the power broker (the megabiography of jacobs' arch nemesis robert moses) is the other biggie.

What Gypsy Mothra said. She was mightily dissed by the lecturers on my History of Modern Art, Design and Film degree!

:( Death and Life... is a great book--this makes me realize how often I think about her ideas just as a matter of course when navigating any city.

sgs (sgs), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 22:27 (twenty years ago)

she's part of the reason I got excited about going to school for planning.

patita (patita), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 22:46 (twenty years ago)

Emeryville to thread, what a nightmare.

andy --, Tuesday, 25 April 2006 22:55 (twenty years ago)

This is really sad. Even Death and Life... (and Economy of Cities) aside, she's a hero for quashing the Lower Manhattan Expressway.

Yer welcome.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 27 April 2006 02:03 (twenty years ago)

And an extremely appreciative obituary...published in the National Review. Not all that surprising, actually, but still, very nice to read.

the libertarians like co-opting her ideas because she had nasty things to say about the government. i liked her reason interview though cuz she was all like "wait, lemme finish!" and "stop putting words in my mouth!"

seven years pass...

Saw Citizen Jane tonight, about her battle(s) with Robert Moses. Way too tired...will have to watch it again. Anyway, every time there was an interview clip with her, I felt like I was watching Pauline Kael, right down to the voice.

Janes Walks are this weekend. I hosted one last year and it went well so I'm doing 2 this year. No idea if anyone's coming - I think website's supposed to tell you but I can't work it out. Anyway, hoping for good weather.

two months pass...

Jane Jacobs looks just like a Photobucket disclaimer.

Did go back to see the documentary again. Really good (and indeed missed a lot the first time). Not sure that saving cities will ultimately be worth her efforts; half the people walking around in the one I live in have their heads glued to their devices and apparently haven't made eye contact with another human being for at least five years.
