mm, isn't phallus like a metaphysical representation of a penis? or does it not just suggest certain things about masculinity in a handy penis-shaped form.

The Phallus is the signified (incorporating, in Freudian patriarchies, LAW, LANGWIDGE, SOCIALISATION, ETC) of which the penis is an often very meagre signifier.

I always thought the phallus was the organ that developes into either a penis of clitoris in a young embryo. But I've never actually been sure....

I would have assumed (very probably wrongly) that penis = male external genital dangly bit, whilst Phallus = stiffy?

why is everyone nervously assuming and NOT LOOKING IT UP. Dictionary = for the knowing of norty words, can't say the word dictionary w/o saying, er ahem anyway, CHAMBERS SAY: "Phallus: n. the penis: the symbol of generation in primitive religion: (cap.) the stinkhorn genus of fungi" (blimey who wrote this dictionary, mary daly?)

Phallos = greek for penis, which = latin for tail, which = slang for women, so there you have it.
