i had never heard of patriots day until i moved to massachusetts. i thought it was about football at first. luckily, it's the one out of a thousand holidays that the post office ignores. i hate not getting mail.

Don't forget to recite the Loyalty Day Creed:

I am a Juggalo...
I am an individual guided by Light...
I know who I am and who I want to be.
I recognize that the path to Shangri La
requires an open mind...
I shall not judge.
I am part of a Family...
I shall Love my Family as I would my blood.
I shall do my Family no harm as I know
what is done to others shall surely be done
to me...
I shall strive to honor my Family and
not disgrace their name...
I am a Ninja...
I have no Fear. I do not Fear the unknown
fore I embrace the wonders of the world around me
and the differences in others.
I shall meet adversity head on fore I am a Survivor.
Nothing can stop my Shine.
I am Human...
I recognize my flaws. I shall strive to change the
things I can control and seek strength for
the things I cannot.
I shall cherish the teachings of my ancestors
and the Family who have fallen before me
I have Love…
With Love there is Unity and Strength.
Love does not hurt nor does it seek to destroy.
I too, shall not hurt or seek to destroy.
With Love in my Heart, Love for my Family
and Love for the Carnival...
I shall find my path to Shangri La

Arise ye workers [starvelings] from your slumbers
Arise ye prisoners of want
For reason in revolt now thunders
And at last ends the age of cant.
Away with all your superstitions
Servile masses arise, arise
We'll change henceforth [forthwith] the old tradition [conditions]
And spurn the dust to win the prize.

So comrades, come rally
And the last fight let us face
The Internationale unites the human race.
So comrades, come rally
And the last fight let us face
The Internationale unites the human race.

No more deluded by reaction
On tyrants only we'll make war
The soldiers too will take strike action
They'll break ranks and fight no more
And if those cannibals keep trying
To sacrifice us to their pride
They soon shall hear the bullets flying
We'll shoot the generals on our own side.

No saviour from on high delivers
No faith have we in prince or peer
Our own right hand the chains must shiver
Chains of hatred, greed and fear
E'er the thieves will out with their booty [give up their booty]
And give to all a happier lot.
Each [those] at the forge must do their duty
And we'll strike while the iron is hot.

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:41 (eighteen years ago) link

The people's flag is deepest red,
It shrouded oft our martyred dead,
And ere their limbs grew stiff and cold,
Their hearts blood dyed its every fold.
Then raise the scarlet standard high. (chorus)
Within its shade we'll live and die,
Though cowards flinch and traitors sneer,
We'll keep the red flag flying here.

Look round, the Frenchman loves its blaze,
The sturdy German chants its praise,
In Moscow's vaults its hymns are sung
Chicago swells the surging throng.

It waved above our infant might,
When all ahead seemed dark as night;
It witnessed many a deed and vow,
We must not change its colour now.

It well recalls the triumphs past,
It gives the hope of peace at last;
The banner bright, the symbol plain,
Of human right and human gain.

It suits today the weak and base,
Whose minds are fixed on pelf and place
To cringe before the rich man's frown,
And haul the sacred emblem down.

With heads uncovered swear we all
To bear it onward till we fall;
Come dungeons dark or gallows grim,
This song shall be our parting hymn.

What could be better than loyalty day? Why LAW DAY of course!

Throughout our Nation's history, we have been reminded repeatedly of the wisdom of the Framers' design. Our system of separation of powers has safeguarded our liberties and helped ensure that we remain a government of laws. Law Day is an occasion for us to celebrate our Constitution and to honor those in the judiciary and legal profession who work to uphold and serve its principles.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Monday, 1 May 2006 18:45 (eighteen years ago) link

This year's Law Day theme, "Liberty Under Law: Separate Branches, Balanced Powers," honors the wisdom of the separation of powers that the Framers of our Constitution established for the Federal Government. James Madison highlighted the importance of our Constitution's separation of powers when he wrote, "the accumulation of all powers, legislative, executive, and judiciary, in the same hands . . . may justly be pronounced the very definition of tyranny."

Jesus. that's absolutely prefect; replacing that one particular day with this other, especially in light of yesterday's Boston Globe "750 laws broken" article...

kingfish doesn't live here anymore (kingfish 2.0), Monday, 1 May 2006 18:53 (eighteen years ago) link

Although I don't get how May 1, 2006 can be "Law Day" and "Loyalty Day" at the same time. Not that the two concepts can't coexist, but if it's one it can't be the other, too.

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 1 May 2006 18:53 (eighteen years ago) link

It can be neither, it's May Day as evidenced by the Red Flags and Union Banners walking past my front door today.

Ed (dali), Monday, 1 May 2006 18:55 (eighteen years ago) link

A modicum of online searching reveals that Loyalty Day started out in 1921 (?) as "Americanization Day," designed explicitly in opposition to May Day, aka International Workers' Day -

Lou Dobbs in panic attack over ANSWER and May Day marches!

"Just how significant is the impact of leftists within the illegal immigration movement? It is no accident that they chose May 1 as their day of demonstration and boycott. It is the worldwide day of commemorative demonstrations by various socialist, communist, and even anarchic organizations."

My favourite bit is this:

"Loyalty Day is also a time for us to reflect on our responsibilities to our country as we work to show the world the meaning and promise of liberty. "

What's that they say about Americans not doing irony?
