Going straight
She was a frumpy student. Now Chelsea Clinton is wearing Versace and
hanging with Madonna. And those curls have gone. Emma Brockes on the

Side by side they sat, a publicist's wildest fantasy. There was Gwyneth
Paltrow, a pipe-cleaner in a halter neck. There was Madonna, betraying a
touch of the Joan Crawfords in limousine-black shades and Dracula-white
concealer - the look of a woman who refers to herself in the third person.
But it was the final member of the improbable trinity who harnessed the
most attention. No sooner had the shock of seeing Chelsea Clinton out of
context subsided, than the impact of how she looked delivered another
power surge.
This because the ex-prez' daughter has had her hair straightened. It went
on for a whole page. You've got to laugh @ thee last bit, haven't you:
the impact of how she looked delivered another power surge
Pah. It did occur to me that it's a bit rich to publically complain abt
"Cliqueyness" @ OxBridge uni (tho she's prob. right) and then turn up at a
fashion show with (deep breath - someone left a copy ov "The Daily Mirror"
on thee metro to-day) Madge, G. Paltrow, Cheryl Crow, Ron Wood, and er,
some other figures from the world of celeb tittle-tattle. Whatever, anyway.
It amused me, in a sad sort of way.

I have an image of chic Chelsea, Madonna, Gwyneth, and Sheryl Crow
standing at one end of a runway while Guy Ritchie put a soft drink at
the other end and shouts, "SURGE!" Bedlam ensues.

She'll probaby get some kind of plastic surgery soon. Both her
parents have. I always thought Bill Clinton was kind of handsome.

But to address the point, yes, using the phrase "power surge" is
hysterical. I like it so much I think I'm going to start using it.
