Huh? Mexico's gunna decriminalize drug possession?

Hunh.

Under the law, police will not penalize people for possessing up to 5 grams of marijuana, 5 grams of opium, 25 milligrams of heroin. Nor does the law penalize possession of 500 milligrams of cocaine -- enough for a few lines.

The legal changes will also decriminalize the possession of limited quantities of LSD, hallucinogenic mushrooms, amphetamines, ecstasy and peyote -- a psychotropic cactus found in Mexico's northern deserts.

Oh great--a more chemically imbalanced Spring Break. Are roofies still banned?

The other thread has some non-intuitive bullshit title and when I created another thread that actually had a decent, informative title, it got deleted microseconds after I posted a link to it on the bullshittedly-titled thread.

ya know in general my anarchist-leaning ways incline me to favor the legalization of everything - but even I balk at heroin and coke (and I assume crack...?), particularly when small amounts are legal but trafficking/large amounts are still somehow illegal? how is that supposed to work...?

The cops won't worry about the users, freeing them to concentrate on just the dealers.

What was the title of your thread, Dan?

hahaha, i accidentally offended this Mexican girl the other night by saying something like, "Man. Mexico. Crazy, right? You can do anything you want there, right?" "You only think that because you're American blah blah Cancun blah blah." Think i'll print this out for her.

"The cops won't worry about the users, freeing them to concentrate on just the dealers."

this seems like a half-assed measure to me. Either make it legal and regulate it, or ... well no that's really the only logical option. Leaving small amounts legal seems to me like just providing a bunch of potential loopholes for dealers to work with.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 18:51 (nineteen years ago)

and I honestly don't understand how this is supposed to make the notoriously corrupt Mexican law enforcement community function better. if anything, this will just complicate their job cuz now they have to separate out the legal from the illegal user/possessor.

I was reading the us/uk health care thread!

oh, and I hate you.

Undoubtedly, but as the 'War on Drugs' and Prohibition here have amply shown, when there's enough demand, supply will meet it and trying to arrest and prosecute all the drug users in Mexico has turned into a waste of time and resources.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 18:55 (nineteen years ago)

Uh, xpost to Shakey.
