If opportunity came knocking, would you open the door, or squint through the peep-hole instead and pretend you weren’t in?

The Webbs are a modest working-class family living in Runcorn. Pauline (played by Angie from Corrie), is seemingly happy with the hand she has been dealt. School dinner-lady by day, door-to-door cosmetics agent by evening and, along with husband Terry, life and soul of the local pub by night.

Nice house, brilliant mates, great family.

But, it’s all change when her twin daughters Jade and Ashley are approached by a model scout and geek goddess Ashley is the chosen one, leaving the beautiful Jade reeling from the injustice….

As Ashley’s star ascends into the glamorous, sophisticated world of professional modelling, the tight knit circle of family and friends find themselves struggling with the fall-out. Will Ashley be the next Naomi Campbell (minus the tantrums)? Or fade into oblivion like a Big Brother evictee. And how will Dad, Terry, deal with his wife’s transformation from model wife to a model’s agent?

Dunno, this arrived in my email. I have to see it I guess, for various reasons. I fear the worst...

BBCThree comedy

does not compute.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 4 May 2006 15:40 (nineteen years ago)

along with husband Terry, life and soul of the local pub by night -- is this, umm, a major part of the UK dream of good living and happy matrimony?

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 4 May 2006 15:42 (nineteen years ago)

(Or would that just be in a place like this alleged "Runcorn," wherein maybe "pub" is a stand-in for "town society?")

A few problems here. Like "the glamorous, sophisticated world of professional modelling"...I don't think so. Sordid and simple more like.

Plus, wasn't Runcorn the setting for Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps. Or was it Warrington?

There was a sweet valley high book with this exact plot.

sunny successor (katharine), Friday, 5 May 2006 12:51 (nineteen years ago)

It all seems to be very Mary Kate and Ashley.

JESSICA AND ELIZABETH

wasn't Runcorn the setting for Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps

It was indeed.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Friday, 5 May 2006 12:58 (nineteen years ago)

And that was really funny wasn't it?

I'm told one of the girls in "2 pints" is the daughter of one of the BBC directors or something.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 5 May 2006 13:00 (nineteen years ago)

That wouldn't surprise me. The first series or so were, ummm, a bit different, but then it just got stupid, as most sitsoms that go on past two series do.

andyjack (andyjack), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:34 (nineteen years ago)

It was probably the single worst "comedy" series I've ever seen in my life

Vitbe... *pause*... Is Good Bread (Dada), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:40 (nineteen years ago)

that sounds bollocks.

one month passes...
Hello, this thread again.

I see it was on, on Sunday. Did anyone see it? (I was in Venice! it was very nice)

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 08:36 (nineteen years ago)

no-one?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 09:30 (nineteen years ago)

nope.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 09:55 (nineteen years ago)

I saw it - not at all bad. It felt a bit like At Home with the Braithwaites, a smidgeon of Shameless crossed with cosier fare a la Two point Four Children. Make your own judgement as to whether that's a positive description.

But, it was pretty competently made, if a little contrived (as most new dramas and, especially, comedies tend to be). It's not challenging TV but it is quite charming. I give it 6 out of 10 and I may well watch next week's ep.

(p.s. Two Pints... is a guilty solitary pleasure of mine. YMMV)

Crimea River (Mark C), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 10:02 (nineteen years ago)

Saw it last night. Actually, it's way better than I expected.

Loads of 'scenes' that don't ring true, mostly about the 'home life' funnily enough. The girls at school all seem way OTT, and there's no way she'd take her model photos into school, much less have them shown to the 'tough' girls.

The 'model life' so far, well no-one's expecting accuracy, it's not a documentary.

Shall keep an eye.

(If you're wondering why I'm that bothered, I have two daughters, etc..)

two weeks pass...
I lost track of this show...

Is it still on?

If not, how did it go?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 09:40 (nineteen years ago)

I think the last episode aired on Sunday night on BBC3, but they'll replay it again. I caught last week's episode, and while I didn't think it was very good, I found myself watching the whole thing. Not really a recommendation, but its not awful.

The Ultimate Conclusion (lokar), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 11:26 (nineteen years ago)

I caught it last night.

Definition of "ran out of steam"...
