Edinburgh flats etc

I am planning to move to Edinburgh for a graduate degree in September at QMUC. I am basically desperate for any advice on accomodations (preferably close to uni), part-time work, and general tips on the city. I will be living on a shoestring budget. Eeek.

Thanks in advance.

Do you know which QM campus you'll be at?

try www.accommodationforstudents.com for flatshares etc.

I know my program is at the Social Sciences, Media and Communication school, I think that it's Clerwood Terrace, Corstorphine?? It's all a bit unclear at this point cause I haven't received my joining package.

Any advice is GREATLY appreciated!!!

There isn't really much student-type accomodation over in Corstorphine really, it's a fairly suburban area.

Well, especially Clerwood. I would suggest there's next to no chance there.

Head towards Saughton? Not that far, although I don't know about public transport.

There's fairly good arterial bus routes, so you'd be better planning to live in a cheaper area nearer the centre.

sean gramophone over on ILM may be able to advise.

Well, you could get somewhere in Pilton, but that's probably not a good idea. It's a bit rich around QMUC. If I were you, I would get somewhere where the students live (Newington, Marchmont, Polwarth etc.) and just travel; it's not so far on the bus. QMUC is really a good bit away from where the action is, unless you like zoo animals, but 25 minutes on the bus will get you there from studentland.

As Aldo says you could try around Saughton, but to be honest, it's totally shit there. Saughton is after all a jail. I'm sure that's not what he meant, but there's really very little going on from pretty much Chesser out to the west.

Around Craigleith is a possibility, but it's still a bit of a way and it's still pretty expensive.

If only someone would build my Edinburgh Underground then it might be easier for you

Hahahah Keith, that would be great!

"Salamander Street. Alight here for prostitutes"

A friend of mine lived in Pilton, but I wouldn't fancy it myself.

It must be great to wake up to the exotic smell of elephant dung.

I will not be moving to Edinburgh. It's official.

Keith, that Edinburgh Underground is great. Don't suppose there is a joined together full version? I'd really like it as my computer wallpaper.

As for accom I would definitely agree with looking for something in Newington, Polwarth or Marchmont. The bus service is really good so I can't see it being much hassle getting from there to where you need to go plus those places should have a bit of life to them and you're within walking distance of the city centre.

You're welcome to the joined up version if you like... Is that your email address? It's actually deliberately split up, but you can have the whole thing...

KeefW (kmw), Saturday, 6 May 2006 10:18 (nineteen years ago)

It really is great. In fact, not to derail the thread with lots of ysi-style requests, but I spent ten minutes trying to sew those pictures together into a desktop yesterday before I realised they didn't all fit*. If I give you my lurker's word that I won't use it for nefarious purposes, any chance you could send me a copy too? The email is as-is, decoy'n'all.

Also, there are a lot of QM students in Morningside, aren't there?

(*Yes, I am a plank).

My husband lived in a flat on Corstorphine Road when he was a student at the then QMC in about 1996. So flatshares do exist, but I think they are quite difficult to come by. I concur with everyone else's suggestion that you might want to live somewhere with more than a zoo and an international rugby stadium then commute to college. Commuting to and from college in the daytime = far easier than commuting to and from pubs in the evening.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 6 May 2006 20:24 (nineteen years ago)

Very good point - for a city with many many pubs, there aren't any good ones in Corstorphine.

Cheers Keith, yeah that email address should work.

mms (mms), Sunday, 7 May 2006 07:54 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks for these suggestions. I will begin looking for a flat-share soon.

Pookas (Pookas), Sunday, 7 May 2006 19:50 (nineteen years ago)

two months pass...
It can't hurt, can it?

I'm looking to rent a spacious 2 dbl-bedroom flat starting September (or October), somewhere in the town centre/haymarket/tollcross-ish area. Eastern end of Marchmont or north end of Bruntsfield probably okay too. I'm a really nice fellow (writer, professional, nonstudent) and I'd appreciate anyone who might know of something opening up. Looking for something in the region of £600-£650 pm.

Many thanks.

Not sure of the rental market these days as i've owned for getting on for 4 years but i think you might be hard pushed to find anywhere in marchmont or bruntsfield, the flats tend to be bigger than 2 beds.
