The United Nations
DISCUSS !

anthony, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Um, this wasn't supposed to be a serious discussion about the United Nations was it? If so, I've been there and they have large rooms with ugly curtains.

Great idea, compromised reality. Arguably good on the charity work, but when you consider that said work would be greatly improved (or maybe not needed at all) if the member nations actually lived up to the charter, then it all sounds off again...

they should chuck all their issues up on ile, or establish their own I Wanna Bomb Everything, and then do posts like Genocide - Classic or Dud, South American Cuntries - Search and Destroy, and Fidel Castro - does anyone on this bitvh like cigars?

UN is an excellent prefix.

The UN is always severly humstrung, so I agree with Ned. In principal it's a worthy idea, but the very name United Nations is a contradiction in terms. I think the UN should concentrate on it's humanitarian efforts, but really needs more support from individual governments. I'm not sure about it's 'peacekeeping' effectiveness.

Did anyone else see that UN Blues documentary series a while ago? Extremely depressing. As I recall, they *really* fucked things up in Somalia. It also seems a terrifically wasteful, beureaucratic monster. And it can't do anything to upset the USA, because it relies on it so heavily for funding.

Didn't Ted Turner give the UN $1bn recently? That seems on a par with mad old women bequeathing their entire estate to national debt repayments.

What am I, Ethan, the instant party factor? ;-)

THere was a lso a major mess up in croatia. Interesting that europe allowed history to repeat itself. I guess history class is a waste of time.
