Taking Sides: Elephants vs. goldfish

Are you one of those blessed individuals who, like myself, remember every tiny thing you've ever seen, heard, read, slept with etc.? Or are you one of those ANNOYING IDIOTS who forget every single goddam thing and throw your hands up and mumble and look downward like you're in a front-row seat at a comedy club whenever somebody brings up anything that happened more than five minutes ago? Wow, didn't put that very nicely did I.

What are your theories re - memory = intelligence? Or memory = capacity to pay attention > function in 'real time' > not be such an unreliable, scatty mess?

I don't sleep with 'tiny things' BTW, just noticed that. (Instant thread mutation killer)

the sleep with tiny things part leaped off the page at me.

I think I'm anal and remember everything yes. I notice this mostly with music where I'll say "oh did you hear the new song by band x", and my friend will be like "yeah". And then "dont you think its good, it sounds a bit like band y". And they'll look at me and go "I don't remember, I only heard it ONCE". And you'll go "but you like it yeah", "I don't know" they reply.

Although the above example might fall on its face since theres a possibility they don't want to commit themselves one way or another.

Or that they are bored with the conversation and looking for someone else to talk to.

I used to have a minutely detailed memory for events, conversations etc. but then my life got better and I realised that it was just becuase I had previously had very little material to work with.

I prefer my reasoning.

I never forget. I never forgive.

I remember nothing

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee....were STRANGERS..........

I remember this and that.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 26 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I remember this but I've forgotten that.

I like elephants better than goldfish but goldfish are quite lovely too. They just don't have the air of silliness that elephants do.

What about 'absent minded professors'? Myth or [based in] reality?

DavidM, Saturday, 26 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I agree with N's answer. I used to remember everything, now I just remember details and am completely blank on the bigger picture.

Long term memory good, short term memory very lousy indeed. I can remember conversations I had several years ago, but if somebody asks me to remember a number of more than a few digfits for a few minutes I am quite unable to do that.
