Has anyone been to Penzance? Or: Where to go in Cornwall and not be Bored or surrounded by posh people.

Ms. Chuck is visiting from Canada, so I thought I'd take her on a quick trip, and I've just discovered it's actually much cheaper than I thought to get the train to Devon -- or more specifically, Penzance.

Has anyone been? Is Penzance interesting enough to sustain two nights? Are there better places to visit nearby?

Ta.

the eden project is somewhere down that way, and is supposed to be pretty amazing...

Penzance isn't the prettiest, but smaller villages like Mousehole or Polperro might be better. Or walk out to St Michael's Mount across the causeway. If you have the time, take the ferry over to the Scilly Isles. It's a lovely trip in good weather and the islands are gorgeous.

I haven't checked distances between all these places, they're just ideas in the surrounding area. Best bet: The Scillies.

i did "the area" a couple of years ago. definitely recommend eden project. and the tate st. ives was good for a couple of hours. i mean, yes, there are posh people around but whatever. didn't make it to the scillies, unfortunately.

Doesn't St Ives have an HIV epidemic?

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 12:14 (nineteen years ago)

Nah, they're all weird downcounty. North Coast reprazent.

Eden Project yes, St Ives yes (though don't be having any unprotected sex). Truro's nice enough for a wander around. If you're anywhere near St Austell tour the brewery.

(x-post yes, yes it does)

Matt (Matt), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 12:16 (nineteen years ago)

The Eden Project is great, well worth seeing (well, one of the domes is anyway). An ex of mine used to live in Porthleven, which is very pleasant if you know people and there's good walking around there but might be a bit out of the way. St Michael's Mount is seconded as well.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 12:17 (nineteen years ago)

That reads like I think it's a reason you shouldn't go, which I don't, obv

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 12:17 (nineteen years ago)

Uh, thanks Madchen.

So is that a no to Penzance, but a yes to the surroundign area, then?

And are the Scillies and Michael's Mount reachable from P?

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 12:29 (nineteen years ago)

The Scilly Isles ferry goes direct from Penzance. Link below, although it doesn't give times. You can get there and back in a day, no problem. There isn't a huge amount to do, except wander around, have some lunch etc, but those islands are really beautiful. You may want to check the weather if you decide to go. The islands may not be much fun in the rain.

This is just a suggestion btw, Cornwall and Devon are lovely counties with plenty to do.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 12:39 (nineteen years ago)

Ta!

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 12:42 (nineteen years ago)

Devon's better, obv.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 08:09 (nineteen years ago)

Hopkins is misguided and wrong, obv.

Matt (Matt), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 08:18 (nineteen years ago)

St Ives definitely. Train goes straight there. Also the coastal path from there to Zennor is great if you want to escape.

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 08:26 (nineteen years ago)

I am misguided and wrong, obv.

But not about this.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 08:28 (nineteen years ago)

Are too. So there.

Matt (Matt), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 08:51 (nineteen years ago)

There's no comeback to that.

GAH! Outfoxed by an Janner.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 09:07 (nineteen years ago)

Excuse me? You know fine well I'm not from bloody Plymouth.

Matt (Matt), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 09:19 (nineteen years ago)

There ain't no feud like a provincial feud.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 09:25 (nineteen years ago)

Janners = all Cornish where I come from. Calling Plymouthians Janners is all about associating them with their Cornish brethren.

"Janner" = affectionate term, obv, except when it comes to Greenies.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 09:29 (nineteen years ago)

Aw, I take it all back.

There ain't no feud like Cornwall and Devon, certianly. Wars of the Roses? Bunch of bloody men hugging, that was (course, they're both better than upcountry).

Matt (Matt), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 10:15 (nineteen years ago)

four years pass...

So I'm giving the South Coast another go, over Xmas. I seem to be staying just outside Mousehole which is almost UNBEARABLY twee and cute.

I still think I prefer the scenery on the North Coast for being more EPIC and WAVES! SMASHING!!! but, um, this was an unbeatable deal.

Somewhat slightly lacking in wheals, though, which is a bit of a shame, but ah well.

Wheal Dream, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 14:48 (fourteen years ago)

Wah-hey! I might even get some CAR CRUSHING WAVE SMASHING ACTION

There appears to be the most beautiful walk all along Cliff Road round to Newlyn with decent pavement - and a more muddy walk round the seaside/cliffs etc. to Lamorna but I know better than to trust the Cornish weather that it'd be passable in December.

Will bring my big boots and waterproof my parka and hope for the best!

(no idea what sort of bus service will be operating over the holidays - I'd really like to get to St. Just and see pretty pretty wheals by the sea. Still haven't been to the LEVANT MINE AND BEAM ENGINE - man, I love beam engines, they make me so happy. Perhaps I'll try to get to the one in Cambourne but I totally ph34r getting stuck at Cambourne bus station for an hour AGAIN (this happens at least twice every holiday I've had down there.))
