I have to go to Orlando, FL for a week to work, is there anything to do there that doesn't involve 8ft mute mice in red shorts or similar child oriented horrors?

about 8 years ago while visiting Universal Studios with my family to what was at the time the World's Largest McDonald's. The most confusing, horrifying place I've ever been to, hands down. Imagine a chuck e cheese, a concentration camp and a regular mcdonalds rolled up into one.

er, i guess you won't be wanting to go there.

"about 8 years ago while visiting Universal Studios with my family to what was at the time the World's Largest McDonald's"

that was supposed to read:

"about 8 years ago while visiting Universal Studios with my family, we wentto what was at the time the World's Largest McDonald's"

you should probably party in the city where the heat is on all night on the beach till the break of dawn.

Do not knock Disneyworld, it is actually a tremendous amount of fun. If you haven't actually been and can rope someone else into joining you, I really think you should go! I'm pretty determined to go back there in the next few years and actually stay ON Disneyworld's land but then I wonder if that's a terribly great idea for more than two days. They do have nightclubs and bars all over Disneyworld now, it's basically its own surreal nation state.

True story: I have a friend who, up until very recently, was childless and single. She went to Disneyworld. Every. Single. Year. (Sometimes multiple times) And she always signed up for breakfast with Winnie the Pooh. So you had this 30 year old alcoholic and a bunch of unrelated children, all sitting and eating and trying to talk to a giant, mute, yellow bear. Really weird.

Sea World is also nice. There's really not that much to do there outside of the amusement park realm though, it doesn't have a lot of super world class restaurants (though the Disneyworld proper restaurants are surprisingly tasty) or major cultural attractions, a LOT of it is like theme/celebrity restaurants or the amusement park related stuff. There is golfing, if you like that, pretty decent golfing supposedly. There's plenty of shopping, Mall at Millenia is the upscale one IIRC, and there was a nice lounge in/near there (I forget, ha ha good drinks I guess). They also apparently boast the world's largest Hard Rock Cafe, and if you are interested in swimming with dolphins or learning to water ski you can sign up for those things. And there are a lot of spas if you need a facial or a massage or something, though I didn't do that there so I can't vouch for them personally.

I do remember last time I was there someone at the front desk of our hotel trying to sell us on taking a "winery tour". I've never tasted nor heard of "Florida wines" before but I think you should do that, also, and report back on your findings.

Do you know what hotel you are staying at? They might be able to give you better information on what they offer a shuttle to, what they are within walking distance to, etc (I don't know if you have a car or not--if you don't have a car your options in Orlando will be very limited because hotels basically offer the shuttles to the parks and very little else).

Here is a link from the Orlando Sentinel, top ten things to do in Orlando that are not Disneyworld/Sea World/Universal:
http://www.orlandosentinel.com/travel/destinations/orlando/orl-trav-top10,0,5528511.story?coll=orl-attractions-more
I always forget about the Kennedy Space Center. Technically two of the things on their list are actually on Disneyworld's land, but I can vouch that the ridiculously named Pleasure Island is really pretty cool and Cirque du Soleil seems fun and non-childreny.

Err I have a soft spot for Orlando (and quite frankly most of Florida), obviously. There is something deeply appealling to me to a place so incredibly bizarre and fucked up.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 13:10 (nineteen years ago)

orlando, the city of broken dreams. really, it's hard to find fun that isn't part of an amusement park. you might want to see if there is any good live music while you're there - i know that universal studios hosts lots of concerts that don't also require admission to the theme park.

besides that, i really can't think of much even though i'm from florida and have been to orlando at least a dozen times.

lf (lfam), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 13:18 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I guess that's the thing, you have to make a pretty huge effort to find fun that isn't somehow connected to the amusement park. Especially if you're going to be there a full WEEK, you've basically got no choice but to cave in to the parks.

If you don't mind venturing onto Disney property, there's a yummy restaurant at the Animal Kingdom Lodge called Boma. It is a buffet type, with African inspired food. The first time I visited I ate seven plates of food (I am a fairly thin, pretty short person, so that was rather impressive).

This might explain why I actually want to go back to Vegas.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 13:36 (nineteen years ago)

I would really like to go to Cape Canaveral/the National Seashore/the wildlife refuge/Cocoa Beach. I'd also like to go to Daytona Beach (for the raceway). And Weeki Wachee. But none of these places are in Orlando. Would it be possible to front-load your work and take off on the back-end?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 13:42 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, if he has access to a car it'd be really easy to take a day trip to any of those places, which would be fun and nice too.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 13:43 (nineteen years ago)

The Trolley & Train Museum sounds nutty. And possibly a bit more up Ed's street (or track).

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 13:50 (nineteen years ago)

Haha it's right by Believe It Or Not, he should stop by there too!!

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 13:51 (nineteen years ago)

Is there a good time of year to go to Florida weatherwise? (I'm not talking about hurricane season, more like humidity.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 13:52 (nineteen years ago)

beware, the kennedy space center only lets you do a tour on their special coaches, and i seem to remember it takes ALL DAY or something. all day stuck on a bus didn't strike me as the best way to see stuff, so we left.

orlando can be fun, if you don't mind wallowing in kitch. we ate at a monster truck theme restaurant, and there's loads of those movies with moving chairs so you can 'feel the action' which can be entertaining.

isn't there a 'grownup' part of disney world? i remember that i was there when i was 20 and couldn't get in to the 'cool' part with all the bars, but this may be all in my imagination.

if you do go to disney, i highly suggest spending all day and then asking for your money back. if you ask loudly enough, they'll take you to their special room, called the 'quiet room', and pay you off. seriously.

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 14:19 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks for all of that, it looks like I'll only have evenings free, however the big model train museum look great. I don't have travel details yet, but i'll probably have a car, I seem to remember from visiting as a 15 year old that it is an impossible place to be without a car and you can bet that the TV station i'll be working for will be in a shed somehwere far from anywhere.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 15:07 (nineteen years ago)

The grown up part of Disneyworld is Pleasure Island, where they have the nightclubs and restaurants.

Under what pretenses would you demand your money back though? I'm intrigued.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 15:09 (nineteen years ago)

You can't even go for a walk in Orlando. The only thing you can rationally do is get the hell out of there as fast as your little legs can carry you. Sorry.

Aimless (Aimless), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 15:25 (nineteen years ago)

If I get any time I'd really like to go to the sea, Atlantic or Gulf?

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 15:27 (nineteen years ago)

I know a lady who knows all about Florida.

You've seen the Atlantic. Gulf! I can't remember what the drive-time is to Sanibel and Captiva but they are great.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

i fucking love disney world!

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 17:36 (nineteen years ago)

fifteen years pass...

Anything kid-friendly worth doing that's not mouse or universal? Was thinking about maybe an airboat ride, idk.

Orlando fucking sucks.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 23 February 2022 17:47 (three years ago)

- See manatees at Blue Spring State Park (not in Orlando, but only about an hour north)
- Get a strawberry lemon gelati at one of the many Jeremiah's Italian Ice locations

How about food? We had pretty good Ethiopian last night at Selam and good Mexican the night before from Bugambillas. Anything worth trying our last night?

I mean, definitely get some Cuban food if you haven't already, though I don't really have a specific place to recommend. Old Cuban Cafe on Colonial Dr was highly recommended by someone I trust, though I haven't been there. Zaza is local chain, more fast casual, but they're good.

Only other recommendation I have is Bosphorous for Turkish food. The kid(s?) might enjoy "popping" the lavas, which comes out puffed up like a big balloon. Think they have a few different locations around Orlando.
