Bro' Town : Classic/dud?

I discovered this last month. I saw the chicken-bun-shoved-up-the-ass episode and the Jeff-becomes-fashion episode (with the spinning B's(?)). I like how Jesus Christ begins every episode in different clothes and character. Anyway, Classic from the few shows I've seen.

i've only seen a couple of episodes but i say it's completely classic.

the fucking worst

bro town exemplifies everything that is bad about new zealand. not only is it deeply unfunny on an inherent, inescapable level, but almost every new zealander i have ever spoken to about it will completely deny this, and then take my criticism as a personal slight, because an insult to this terrible show is an insult to new zealand, and therefore an insult to every new zealander ever.

p.s. dud

tell me more about this show

I only got to see the two episodes they had on the Air New Zealand flight video entertainment database.. but it's a made-for-young-adults-or-older comedy based on a group of Maori youth in south Auckland, and their adventures. The show begins with Jesus Christ trying out some sort of new activity or trend every show which foreshadows (in its slight and weird way) what's going to happen down on earth... the chicken-bun-in-the-ass episode featured a genericly European parody of Steve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter, and his extremely racist son being a whiny ass around his "black" friends the entire time... telling more about this episode would give away the episode, but it was really head spinning how explicitly racist they made some of the characters on the show be, with the cast of the show rolling their eyes going "again?" and taking it in stride.

The animation style isn't anything to rave about really... Simpsons, King Of the Hill, even Family guy kinda outdoes that aspect.. but the writing of the show is pretty odd and unique and, at times, pretty damn funny, to me.

Then again, I may have just seen the best two episodes. Perhaps the link above has snippets of the show? Or YouTube might help?

DOQQUN (donut), Thursday, 11 May 2006 03:49 (nineteen years ago)

for the record, I want to remove the quotes around 'black' above.. they're unnecessary. Apologies.

i guess it would be good to know what webber finds funny, as a reference point. (i'm not being snarky or defensive, just curious.)

I thought I just did...

I really really really dislike South Park, which is probably a good comparison since it is a cartoon that everyone else seems to love, but I see as hamfisted unfunny satire centred around already exhaused issues week after week.

(admittedly i stopped watching bro town two or three episodes into the first series, maybe it is better now? i doubt it. "you're a maori" lol

webber (webber), Thursday, 11 May 2006 04:29 (nineteen years ago)

I thought I just did...

You didn't elaborate at all.

You just stated that every New Zealander you know is afraid to admit they don't find the show funny and be hurt by you criticizing the show, which is an awfully presumptious thing to say on so many levels.

DOQQUN (donut), Thursday, 11 May 2006 04:43 (nineteen years ago)

I mean, it's just fine if you don't like the show!

You just haven't explained in any way what aspects of the show make it unfunny to you.

except for the NZer above your post

Well, for starters, webber's dislike of South Park shouldn't be induced to Bro' Town being similar to South Park at all, because it's not.

DOQQUN (donut), Thursday, 11 May 2006 09:05 (nineteen years ago)

I tried watching a few episodes when it started, but it just wasn't funny for me. I'm undecided as to whether it's just poorly done or if it's because years of exposure to British and American comedy has left me incapable of appreciating NZ humour.

No, I said it applied to every New Zealander I had talked to about the show, which isn't presumptious at all.

You just haven't explained in any way what aspects of the show make it unfunny to you.

Also, lol the dad is a drunk and the maori is a thief or something and another character enjoys one-dimensional unfunny traits that are repeated in every episode

webber (webber), Thursday, 11 May 2006 22:52 (nineteen years ago)

Except for the "dad is a drunk, maori is a thief" part, you've described a cynical stereotype of a cartoon, not elaborated on a single one. But you started well with the beginning of your last line.. go on from there.

No, I said it applied to every New Zealander I had talked to about the show, which isn't presumptious at all.

Um...?

(YOU HAVE TED POWER TO GO INSIDE YOUR NEW ZEALANDER FRIENDS HEADS AND KNOW THEY ARE AFRAID TO ADMIT DEEP DARK HORRIBLE THINGS OH MY?)

HI DERE WEBBER DO YOU LIKE HITLER MELODY RULES?

um, don't have a TV &c&c&c. from what I've seen = totally fine in a leagues-better-than-other-NZ-attempts-at-comedy, & wld take it as local popcultphenom over whatever else we've got.
