Amazingly theres no Byker Grove thread that I could find.
So with the news that The next series of children's drama Byker Grove will be the last, the BBC has announced.
Which was your fave?

Bronson's got to pay.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 11 May 2006 11:49 (nineteen years ago)

Danny Kendall will get his revenge.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Thursday, 11 May 2006 11:50 (nineteen years ago)

Didn't have one, never watched it. Too ol.

Basically, the one reason I was glad we moved away from South Shields when we did, and that BG wasn't on when I was younger, is that in my mid-teens, I had ambitions to do acting, and had all that been going on 10 miles up the road (i.e. too far to get involved but close enough to feel local) would have pissed me off no end.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 11 May 2006 11:50 (nineteen years ago)

lol @ when PJ got blinded by paintball pellets (actually no this was v disturbing)

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 11 May 2006 11:55 (nineteen years ago)

Come on, Grange Hill >>>>>>>> Byker Grove, although the rockist view states that GH was past its best when BG began.

On the other hand, Let's Get Ready To Rhumble >>>>>>>>> Just Say No.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 11 May 2006 12:02 (nineteen years ago)

Byker should've stopped when they killed Geoff.

I wish BBC2 would repeat all the old Grange Hills again like they did in the early-mid 90s.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Thursday, 11 May 2006 12:04 (nineteen years ago)

Geoff died?! WTF?!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 11 May 2006 12:05 (nineteen years ago)

Testicular cancer >>>>>>>>>>>> Just Say No.

Doktor Faustus (noodle vague), Thursday, 11 May 2006 12:06 (nineteen years ago)

Fresh & Fly (Ronnie Birtles & Michelle Gaye's band) >>>> PJ & Duncan

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 11 May 2006 12:06 (nineteen years ago)

Grange Hill's sudden relocation from London to Liverpool was the final straw for me. It seemed to lose its way after Mrs. McClusky left, although it got back on track a little when Mr. Robson somehow ended up running things...

carson dial (carson dial), Thursday, 11 May 2006 12:07 (nineteen years ago)

Geoff died?! WTF?!

Killed in a fire years ago.

x-post. Didn't damon from brookie end up in Grange Hill as a janitor?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Thursday, 11 May 2006 12:08 (nineteen years ago)

Grange Hill's sudden relocation from London to Liverpool was the final straw for me.

I'm sorry? You're serious?????

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Thursday, 11 May 2006 12:09 (nineteen years ago)

xpost

Doubt it, he was stabbed to death in the late 80s wasn't he?

Doktor Faustus (noodle vague), Thursday, 11 May 2006 12:10 (nineteen years ago)

The school in that Dr Who episode the other week should've been Grange Hill.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 11 May 2006 12:13 (nineteen years ago)

Grange Hill by a mile.

I was in Byker once and a man and his young daughter came up to me wanting to know any sights they could see around the area from the show. I had to tell them there weren't any and that Byker was a shit-pit. Then I made them give me their money and watches.

Harriet The Donkey vs. Spuggy

JohnFoxxsJuno (JohnFoxxsJuno), Thursday, 11 May 2006 12:22 (nineteen years ago)

FP, Grange Hill was transferred to Phil Redmond's company a few years ago, and the production was moved up to Liverpool. It's still "London", I guess, but the school is completely different to how it used to be.

carson dial (carson dial), Thursday, 11 May 2006 12:30 (nineteen years ago)

I thought the school was burned down hence the move to liverpool but Robson still as headmaster?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Thursday, 11 May 2006 13:36 (nineteen years ago)

a girl who worked at my local mcdonalds looked identical to spuggy

i am not a nugget (stevie), Thursday, 11 May 2006 13:40 (nineteen years ago)

It probably was Spuggy (except I heard that she ended up working in Fenwicks in Newcastle.)

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Thursday, 11 May 2006 13:45 (nineteen years ago)

I thought the school was burned down hence the move to liverpool

That's the Blairite Choice at work, kids.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 11 May 2006 19:21 (nineteen years ago)

A guy in my year at school looked like Danny Kendall.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Thursday, 11 May 2006 22:07 (nineteen years ago)

Man, Spuggy man!

Byker Grove did indeed lose its way after they killed Geoff off. He was the heart and soul of that show. It's like if Cheers had continued without Sam.
Bit more cheesy and melodramatic than GH. Remember the girl who was electrocuted or Dec going blind?

Grange Hill was a fine show. I was a little too young to remember all the Zammo stuff clearly, but I did watch it in the late 80s and early 90s when they had the controversial (with Daily Mail idiots at least) teen pregnancy story and the incredibly depressing saga of the middle class kid whose parents have their home repossessed and have to stay in b&bs. It had some good student paper stuff though, which, along with Press Gang, made me think journalism was a good career. (Oh dear!)
It was still pretty decent up to 95, but when I've caught the odd episode more recently it's unrecognisable. Still, Robson as alkie headmaster was highly amusing.

Stew (stew s), Friday, 12 May 2006 10:40 (nineteen years ago)

Isn't this like the third school they've had in Grange Hill now? The one in the proper old-skool Tucker Jenkins episodes is an old red brick one.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 12 May 2006 13:29 (nineteen years ago)

I blame Sean McGuire for Grange Hill jumping the shark.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 12 May 2006 13:30 (nineteen years ago)

One of my first Grange Hill memories is that the school was on a busy road - or possibly even in two parts split by a busy road - and the school paper was campaigning for a footbridge.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Friday, 12 May 2006 13:36 (nineteen years ago)

SAG campaigned for the footbridge!

A primary school teacher of mine had previously taught in red brick GH Mk 1 and hatched some penpal scheme which ended up with us visiting the school which was somewhere in Wood Green as I recall.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 12 May 2006 14:01 (nineteen years ago)

I can remember tucker in it. I stopped watching when it moved from 5.05 to 4.30. I kept forgetting it was on and realised i wasn't that bothered. Haven't seen Byker Grove since geoff died. That was the end for me.

Eventually you just get too old for kids tv...

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Friday, 12 May 2006 14:03 (nineteen years ago)

I remember GH starting. A posh kid was the first fatality, he fell off a multi-storey or something cos the nasty boys dared him. There was an uber-bully before Gripper Stebson whose name I don't remember but he was proper hard: he hospitalised Tucker at the end of one series.

Kenneth Anger Management (noodle vague), Friday, 12 May 2006 14:06 (nineteen years ago)

Benny Green and Fat Alan were awesome.
I remember someones cousin dying. I can't remember if he drowned or if it was the one noodle vague recalls.

I think Tuckers Luck used to come on a saturday afternoon after Playaway on BBC2. I don't remember anything about it though.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Friday, 12 May 2006 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

Fresh & Fly (Ronnie Birtles & Michelle Gaye's band)
I remember that. Also Ronnie being done for shoplifting. And the graffiti saying Zammo chases the dragon.

Ziggy Greaves was my fave. Did any of Gonch's scams ever work?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Friday, 12 May 2006 14:12 (nineteen years ago)

The entirety of my knowledge of Grange Hill comes from the parody in The Young Ones:

---

SCHOOLBOY #1: So that's settled then! We organize a protest against school uniforms!

SCHOOLBOY #2: Great! We can use the banners left over from the last protest we organized, so that racism wouldn't be an issue in this school.

SCHOOLBOY #1: Good! Then that's what we'll do. I'll get Mucker, Trucker, Ducker, and Sucker. You get Spaz!

SCHOOLBOY #2: But I am Spaz!

SCHOOLBOY #1: Oh. Well, I'd better get Spaz as well then. But we've got to hurry. [They start running, but bump into a stern-looking man in a 3-piece suit]

SCHOOLBOY #2: Sorry, Mr. Liberal. We were in a hurry.

MR. LIBERAL: Hang on, you pair of young scruffy tearaways. Don't you realize the way you act is influencing millions of children to talk Cockney and be insubordinate?!

SCHOOLBOY #1: Come on, sir. Don't be silly! We're the only kids in Britain who never say fu....

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 12 May 2006 14:27 (nineteen years ago)

Grange Hill all the way. But after Mr. Bronson and Mrs. "Bridget the Midget" McClusky leave, forget it.

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 09:52 (nineteen years ago)

'byker' is STILL GOING?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

the confusing situation Enrique currently endures (Enrique), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 12:53 (nineteen years ago)

Not for long.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 13:27 (nineteen years ago)

yeah but still. i assumed it stopped when i stopped watching... more than a decade ago.

the confusing situation Enrique currently endures (Enrique), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 13:33 (nineteen years ago)

I liked the GH inter school bashing that took place on some piece of waste ground against St Jo's.

JohnFoxxsJuno (JohnFoxxsJuno), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 14:05 (nineteen years ago)

Didn't justins(?) boyfriend get killed in that?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 14:12 (nineteen years ago)

Justine i mean.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 14:13 (nineteen years ago)

Vague recollections of a wide shot of the empty waste ground with crumpled youth on the ground. Did Justines boyfriend not get run over though?

They'd need to buy the rights off the BBC first. You could always buy them on DVD.
