Has nobody else been following this scandal in France? Apparently Villepin and possibly Chirac have been trying to smear Sarkozy.

Today, Le Monde is saying that Chirac too might be implicated. (in French)

there's nothing worse than being implicated (in french)!

C'est vrai, en plus.

I meant to link to this. Sorry.

Chirac has survived scandals that would have felled a dozen U.S. presidents. The only reason he's not doing time right now over the kickback empire he presided over as mayor of Paris is his presidential immunity. I'm guessing he'll ride out this storm but Villepin will go down. If Chirac was smart he'd appoint Sarkozy as prime minister now: it is the poisoned chalice par excellence in French politics.

I've been observing this idly. I knew they all hated each other but not to that degree.

The Sarkozistes have waffled recently on whether he would take it.

From the IHT article:

"Chirac himself has come under pressure - first by suggestions that he himself instructed Villepin to have Sarkozy and others on the list investigated and now by a report that he has a secret bank account in Japan. His office has denied both allegations.

The satirical weekly Le Canard Enchaîné reported Wednesday that in his testimony, Rondot had also mentioned that Chirac had received regular payments from a cultural organization in the 1990s that had amassed more than 300 million French francs."

The secret bank account thing is interesting. Chirac has clocked up something like 50 trips to Japan - way more than the call of duty. For years there have been rumours that he has a mistress in Japan and perhaps a child there too.

He's often referred to as being an aficionado of Japanese 'art' as well.

Having just googled around, the rumour seems to be that he had an affair with a Japanese interpreter, with whom he had a son who is now around 20. And he set up some kind of spurious Franco-Japanese friendship fund to support his mistress and son.

Hmmm. I'd never heard that.
