What opportunities/strategies do Americans have for emigrating?

I can't take the SUVs, the megachurches and the "homosexuality is an abomination," the inability to provide reasonable health care for everyone, and last but not least, the fear of the other and the militarism all rolled up into one potent hateful brew. And it's only going to get worse.

I want out.

But I'm not a health care professional or a programmer, none of my grandparents were born in Ireland or Italy or Germany. And I don't know any cute Dutch girls who will marry me for work permit purposes.

Any ideas?

Find the immigration department websites of countries you are interested in. See if they have a "long term skills shortage" document available. If your skills/qualifications are there, you're in. If not, do vocational training anmd seek employment based on what is on the list and achievable by yourself.

I love your screen name, red state blues.

Serious answer, I know many people who are now living in Mexico. It's relatively cheap. Jobs like teaching are pretty easy to get. Lots of nice beautiful little villages.

A friend of mine had a friend who could somehow get me a "legitimate" Irish passport for $25,000. Just enough that I would daydream about it, but still too much to really take the idea seriously. And I was always sure that even if it worked, somehow it would turn around and bite me in the ass in ten years.

Many european countries allow you to marry or partner with people of the same sex if cute dutch girls are lacking. Stick it to the conservatives in style, marry a man.

Move to a blue state?

nickn (nickn), Thursday, 11 May 2006 16:43 (nineteen years ago)

Wait, if one of your grandparents was born in Italy, you're in????

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Thursday, 11 May 2006 16:45 (nineteen years ago)

Apparently so:

Ed (dali), Thursday, 11 May 2006 16:49 (nineteen years ago)

Italy seems just as bad as America, frankly.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 11 May 2006 16:50 (nineteen years ago)

You have to join their army? Eh forget it then.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Thursday, 11 May 2006 16:51 (nineteen years ago)

Those were ors rather than ands. So have a grandparent or agree to go into the army for a fixed period of time (I read the Italian version).

Ed (dali), Thursday, 11 May 2006 16:52 (nineteen years ago)

Oh so it's not have a grandparent AND do either A or B? Ok then Italy is still on.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Thursday, 11 May 2006 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

All of Europe

Ed (dali), Thursday, 11 May 2006 16:54 (nineteen years ago)

It's less than Italy itself is a desirable destination, but it does get you inside the EU.

What, I wonder, is the fixed period of time?

red state blues (redstateblues), Thursday, 11 May 2006 16:57 (nineteen years ago)

I dunno I think Italy seems charming, I mean I'm not interested for political reasons, I just like the concept of randomly moving to Italy.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Thursday, 11 May 2006 16:58 (nineteen years ago)

And being stuck with the same Berlusconi nonsense (and worse in some ways), as we have to put up with here.

If it got me citizenship, the idea of signing up for the Dutch army and doing a stint as a UN peacekeeper somewhere doesn't sound like an altogether bad deal. Although I think it's borderline at my age than an army would take me.

red state blues (redstateblues), Thursday, 11 May 2006 17:00 (nineteen years ago)

Italy just isn't the place to go now or at any time over the next 15-20 years, you may as well move to Poland or Albania for all the opportunities it'll give you.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 11 May 2006 17:01 (nineteen years ago)

what about germania? both of my fathers grandparents were born there, does that mean anything????

stewart downes (sdownes), Thursday, 11 May 2006 17:01 (nineteen years ago)

I've emigrated nearly all of my investment dollars. Do you hear that, Amerikkka? All $7000 of my mutual fund money! I put it in "World Growth" and "Emerging Markets!" You can take your, how you say, Essanpi Five Hundaleth, you can take it and shove it up you ass! How do you like it!

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Thursday, 11 May 2006 17:05 (nineteen years ago)

I think your father might be able to get German citizenship (the rule is usually grandparents), and then that would open the door for you. My impression is that Germany was more liberal ("blood" was the most important thing) but that they've moved more in line with other countries.

A few months ago I was daydreaming about moving to mexico city. i dunno, it sounded cool at the time.

i've dreamt of rubies! (Mandee), Thursday, 11 May 2006 17:12 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, I mispoke (miswrote?) -- MY grandparents, my father's parents, were both born in germany. However, some quick googling seemed to indicate that this would still not be enough to get german citizenship. Oh well, I guess I am stuck in amerikkka for the time being.

stewart downes (sdownes), Thursday, 11 May 2006 17:18 (nineteen years ago)

i would seriously consider emigrating to canada or the UK. I mean, I would for myself.

also, Ed has a good point.

AaronK (AaronK), Thursday, 11 May 2006 17:48 (nineteen years ago)

wahts this $25K for an irish passport shit? i heard a few years ago if you had only 1 irish grandparent, you could apply for irish citizenship. heard they cracked down on it and changed the law tho. anyone know anything on that?

jinx hijinks (sanskrit), Thursday, 11 May 2006 17:54 (nineteen years ago)

The $25K was if you didn't, ahem, "officially qualify" under the published rules. They did change the rules signficantly a few years ago (around the same time as the Germans, I think) but I don't know the details. I'm sure it's googlable.
