what has been the human species artistic zenith thus far?

select one work of art and make a case for why it has been the human species creative highpoint.

it can be anything from the Andrew WK album to the Guggenheim museum.

it has to be one isolated 'thing'. it must be of a creative disposition although i'll allow a lenient reading of the term, it can be any of the following: a painting, a sculpture, a song, an album, a piece of archiecture, a piece of design work, a piece of advertising, a film, a television programme, a book, a poem. or anything else which can in one way or another be deemed artistic.

God?

(Assuming him to be a work of fiction.)

phil, Saturday, 26 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"I Want a Hot Girl" and Predator 2 are tied. I can't think of anything that makes me prouder to be part of the human race than those two things.

Mike's answer has a certain zing.

Anyway, one zenith -- you crazy man, you crazy! There be multiple. I've seen dinners prepared with more art than most plays and paintings.

"Frank In The River" by Jim Woodring. Universal, resonant, not too culturally loaded or culture-specific, funny, bizarre, gorgeous to look at. The more time I have with it, the more I realize how perfectly tuned it is.

I'm not sure whether to be appalled that nobody seems to have taken the question seriously, or appalled by the idea that perhaps you all have.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 8 November 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

When I saw the question, before reading the sense of it being a single work, I was tempted to argue for Hi records in the early '70s - my favourite style of music, my favourite producer, some of my favourite musicians (especially when Al Jackson joined in) and several great singers including my absolute favourite, Al Green.

A book: I have one called Shakespeare: The Complete Works. If that's cheating, I guess probably the 1001 Nights is too. I'm tempted to nominate George Herriman's Krazy Kat Sunday pages, but they might not count either. And I'm not really up to trying to justify claiming that is 'better' than King Lear or Bernini's Ecstasy Of St Teresa or Buffy The Vampire Slayer or Pulp's Different Class or Ulysses or the Alhambra or The Seven Samurai. I want a top 1000 at least, I think.

jack cole (jackcole), Sunday, 9 November 2003 01:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe dicking around IS the artistic zenith of the human species thus far? Ever think about THAT, G-Man?

Vonda Shepard, Sunday, 9 November 2003 02:11 (twenty-two years ago)

xpost with myself:

anyone that seriously refers to another human being as "G-Man" is the nadir of the human experience.
