That feeling where you know there's something exciting that you've just put to the back of your mind and it takes you a minute to remember what it was

It turned out to be ... going to check whether the things on the clothes horse were dry yet.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 15 May 2006 12:15 (nineteen years ago)

Disappointed outcome: they aren't.

I love folding away freshly laundered clothes.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 15 May 2006 12:18 (nineteen years ago)

I do that almost daily. (Forgetting the cool thing I was thinking about but remembering that it was cool). It's usually something cooler than laundry. (I don't like doing laundry).

sleep (sleep), Monday, 15 May 2006 12:35 (nineteen years ago)

What about the disappointment that follows when you realize the cool thing isn't as cool as you imagined it to be back when you didn't remember it?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 15 May 2006 12:36 (nineteen years ago)

No, usually I get the feeling more like "what was I doing? Why am I standing in the middle of the living room with a spatula and a disused section of the Guardian?"

I Was Wrong, That Don't Mean You Were Right (kate), Monday, 15 May 2006 12:38 (nineteen years ago)

Kate, I'm bored with hearing about your sex life.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 15 May 2006 12:49 (nineteen years ago)

Ha.

I have this feeling all the time at the moment.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 15 May 2006 13:00 (nineteen years ago)

It's funny that what we remember isn't the thing but the feeling of excitement/anticipation about the thing, and since N and I hatched from the same egg obv I do this all the time as well. But possible disappointment is exactly why you shouldn't get too caught up in it -- it's likely to have been the enticing prospect of making sure all your tupperware fits in the storage cupboard (and I do love an organized cupboard).

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 15 May 2006 13:01 (nineteen years ago)

I like Alba more and more.

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Monday, 15 May 2006 13:02 (nineteen years ago)

I like that our memories are emotional in that way. WE ARE NOT ROBOTS, egg-mate.

x-post - hurrah! is it the clean laundry?

Alba (Alba), Monday, 15 May 2006 13:03 (nineteen years ago)

Eh? I don't have a sex life, bucko. You're probably sick of hearing about my LACK of a sex life. :-P

I Was Wrong, That Don't Mean You Were Right (kate), Monday, 15 May 2006 13:04 (nineteen years ago)

the fact that you were excited about folding it.

When I get this feeling, it is usually about telling someone something. Then there's the feeling where you finally let it go because there's no chance of remembering.

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Monday, 15 May 2006 13:05 (nineteen years ago)

...anyway, the exciting thing was painting a mural. To put your dirty mind at rest.

I Was Wrong, That Don't Mean You Were Right (kate), Monday, 15 May 2006 13:06 (nineteen years ago)

Of course, the flip-side of this is an awful dread feeling that you can't attribute to anything. And then you remember that it's just that your clothes might not by dry enough to fold by the time you go out and everything is OK again.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 15 May 2006 13:07 (nineteen years ago)

I dunno, it depends whether you wanted to wear one of the drying items. That can sink me into deep gloom, worse than the free-floating dread was.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 15 May 2006 13:23 (nineteen years ago)

Oh the number of times I took ONE PAIR of wet jeans to the laundromat and shoved them in the dryer to shrink them back to proper "going out" fit, then ran home to shower, then ran back to laundry in my PJs to pick up jeans (now dry). I think the lady there thought I was funny.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 15 May 2006 13:26 (nineteen years ago)

All this talk inspired me to finally have a go at mastering the miracle "J-Fold" method of folding clothes (think this particular video is actually Taiwanese). And I have! I feel like today is the start of a better future.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 15 May 2006 13:42 (nineteen years ago)

That J-Fold shit is sick.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Monday, 15 May 2006 14:23 (nineteen years ago)

i get this feeling way too often, i always come away from it like i've just missed out on a huge opportunity to cheer up my day.

I rarely ever get the memory back.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 15 May 2006 14:33 (nineteen years ago)

I saw someone on children's TV (I think it might have been Andi Peters) folding a jumper in a very impressive way. One-handed, I seem to recall. I think he said he used to work in Benetton, and spent all day re-folding jumpers.

Is your laundry dry yet, N?

C J (C J), Monday, 15 May 2006 19:20 (nineteen years ago)

I love folding away freshly laundered clothes.

mrs fiendish and i were just remarking on how you really should come round and visit us, nick. bring your best folding hands.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 15 May 2006 19:40 (nineteen years ago)

The j-fold is awesomely fastinating to watch, but wouldn't a whole pile of it be uneven? Because the folded over side is slightly thicker? Or would you have to alternate by grabbing the opposite corners on the next one?

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 15 May 2006 20:34 (nineteen years ago)

Exactly!

Alba (Alba), Monday, 15 May 2006 22:47 (nineteen years ago)

I love the J-fold! I've been using it for at least a year - works great on t-shirts & tanks, which end up even. (There is a side section of shirt tucked inside the first fold you make. The second fold brings the other side in.) Long sleeved shirts and sweaters = not so great. When I first saw the video, I refolded everything in our drawers and worked at a local 5k the next weekend handing out the t-shirts - which I had refolded :)

Jaq (Jaq), Monday, 15 May 2006 22:57 (nineteen years ago)

I just watched that video, and it took me a bit to get hold of it, but goddam, that's impressive stuff. My life has been made a little easier.

Johnny B Was Quizzical (Johnney B), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 07:10 (nineteen years ago)

Wow, that has just changed my life.

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 07:19 (nineteen years ago)

wow!!
i have so many things to refold!

re: thread topic, i do this all the time, even in movies, when i forget that i'm not actually there to see 15 minutes of trailers (previews). as much as i love trailers. then i'm all half-surprised - omg, and we get to watch a movie now!!

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 13:45 (nineteen years ago)

I ponder this j-fold idea.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 13:48 (nineteen years ago)

don't ponder - do!
it will seem wrong at first, and then so right.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 13:51 (nineteen years ago)

i had an entire dream based around this folding technique last night, even though i suspect that it's not a very good technique/ is going to work properly about one time in four (at most) when you just happen to pinch exactly the right bits of fabric. i used to fold for a living, i was good at it!

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 13:55 (nineteen years ago)

I'm totally like that at the cinema too robyn - by the time the excitement of the trailers and adverts is over I've usually half-forgotten what film I'm even there to see, so it's extra exciting/surprising.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 13:56 (nineteen years ago)

Ah, jed, the scepticism of the seasoned folder.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 13:57 (nineteen years ago)

Alba, as a keen folder you know that at its best it can be quite meditative. this is more of a trick and is never ging to bring about inner peace. plus, as laurel said, there's the lopsided pile thing.
