Are they nerds? Or hitmen? Or nerds pretending to be hitmen?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 15 May 2006 12:20 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe they're just cold.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Monday, 15 May 2006 12:24 (nineteen years ago)

I wore a long black coat today. it was cold.

lil' merzbow wow (haitch), Monday, 15 May 2006 12:29 (nineteen years ago)

I saw a couple of them last week, and it was almost 20 degrees Celsius. So they definitely weren't cold.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 15 May 2006 12:30 (nineteen years ago)

'cold' is a culturally relative term.

No, I'm interested in the black coat as a cultural phenomenon. Seems like a lot of these guys think the long black coat is the epitome of cool, when in fact it is the opposite of that. But I'm not saying this applies to all guys with black coats, I'm mainly talking about the younger ones, those who usually also wear "metal" t-shirts.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 15 May 2006 12:35 (nineteen years ago)

are you giving lessons on how to be cool now?

the confusing situation Enrique currently endures (Enrique), Monday, 15 May 2006 12:36 (nineteen years ago)

Yes.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 15 May 2006 12:37 (nineteen years ago)

Tuomas: watch The Matrix. You can do it with the sound off, if you like. All will become clear.

I Was Wrong, That Don't Mean You Were Right (kate), Monday, 15 May 2006 12:39 (nineteen years ago)

they are indeed nerds pretending to be hitmen. well put.

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Monday, 15 May 2006 12:39 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, but what I was trying to say is that long black coats seem cool in the movies (and The Matrix may have repopularized them), but they rarely do in real life.

lil' merzbow wow (haitch), Monday, 15 May 2006 12:46 (nineteen years ago)

how long?

RJG (RJG), Monday, 15 May 2006 12:48 (nineteen years ago)

Well, I've got a long black coat, and I've been told it gives me an air of authority and respectibility. I've also told it looks either funereal or like I'm going to the opera.

I found it for £5 in Oxfam - it's not like I payed £150 for it.

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 15 May 2006 16:04 (nineteen years ago)

in my high school, there was a very clear intersection of the metal-heady/gothy/dark kids and the "nerdy" kids. They usually played dungeons and dragons and worked crew for drama productions.

matlewis (matlewis), Monday, 15 May 2006 17:06 (nineteen years ago)

oh.. and they wore black trenchcoats (at least until the columbine shooting), hence it being relevant

matlewis (matlewis), Monday, 15 May 2006 17:07 (nineteen years ago)

I am wearing a long black coat today. Well, a 3/4 length coat, at least.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 15 May 2006 17:09 (nineteen years ago)

I prefer the nerd in the beige trenchcoat who wears the fedora. There is always one of him.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 15 May 2006 17:14 (nineteen years ago)

I knew a girl who wore that. She was pretty cool.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 15 May 2006 17:14 (nineteen years ago)

He's like the highlander, actually; there's always just one of him. Even in college. I was about to wonder what would happen if two of the fedora guys were to meet -- like would they be best friends? -- but then obviously no: they run into one another under the cover of nights and then one of them must die.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 15 May 2006 17:15 (nineteen years ago)

he could be tzitzising it up - no way to tell what's under that coat.

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Monday, 15 May 2006 18:04 (nineteen years ago)

Colin, I've just bought almost exactly the same coat.

So whats wrong with wearing a long black (eg wool) coat because it keeps you warm? What would you have an adult man wear - a bright sky blue or fire truck red coat?

Why do people pick on younger guys who wear this as if it is making some kind of statement, when a man of the same age in business attire is just going to work.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 15 May 2006 22:58 (nineteen years ago)

2 hitman wannabe nerds, recently:
