haha xpost According to the first link I could find on google (searching for narcissism not vanity):

Freud coined the phrase "narcissism of small differences" in a paper titled "The Taboo of Virginity" that he published in 1917.

And I don't think anyone on ILx has ever posted anything else.

Ah, searching for vanity you get a page named "Christ Didn't Celebrate Christmas" which is not relevant. Also discrepahcneis between small and minor. Little luck in finding the whole essay online, though.
