I see we've already had a "Neighbours - Bonza or Dag?" thread and a "Taking Sides - Neighbours vs. Home and Away" thread. So post your Prisoner: Cell Block H/Sons and Daughters/Young Doctors/Sullivans/A Country Practice/Return to Eden/Flying Doctors/Blue Heelers/Chances/Pacific Drive memories here!

I always thought that spinning diamond/dodecahedron Grundy Organisation logo was utterly classic.

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Thursday, 18 May 2006 19:42 (nineteen years ago)

Man, I used to love A Country Practice.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 18 May 2006 19:44 (nineteen years ago)

S: neighbours
sons and daughters
prisoner (before bee left)
home and away (roo and angels years only although alf stewart will always be gold)
a country practice before molly kicked it
heartbreak high - gold once they got over the initial storyline
sweet and sour (i still sing that song to myself all time)
E street (wheels!)
secret life of us

D: all remaining home and away
young doctors
flying doctors
blue heelers
cop shop
the restless years
the sullivans
richmond hill

as you can see i hate anything old, sick or cop-like. also add that show where the chicks run a farm ranch thingy. LIKE CHICKS COULD RUN A FARM.

i know ive seen paradise beach and pacific drive but they are too mixed together in my head to work out which was which.

i still want to see "class of '74"

sunny successor (katharine), Thursday, 18 May 2006 20:57 (nineteen years ago)

oh and chances was perfect.

i thought return to eden was a miniseries. that the one where the rich chick gets her face bi

sunny successor (katharine), Thursday, 18 May 2006 20:59 (nineteen years ago)

ahem

her face bitten off by a crocodile, right?

sunny successor (katharine), Thursday, 18 May 2006 21:00 (nineteen years ago)

Right. It's amazing what plastic surgeons can do these days.

registered ratty (registered ratty), Thursday, 18 May 2006 21:02 (nineteen years ago)

There used to be one on just after Neighbours set around a Syndey cafe, but they pulled it after about six months just when I was getting into it.

chap who would dare to be a nerd, not a geek (chap), Thursday, 18 May 2006 21:03 (nineteen years ago)

I started a Prisoner Cell Block H a few months back
Prisoner: Cell Block H Classic Or Dud?

Flying Doctors and The Sullivans were great(until Harry left). My mum loved Richmond Hill.
A country practice was great too.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Thursday, 18 May 2006 21:05 (nineteen years ago)

watch out!

sunny successor (katharine), Thursday, 18 May 2006 21:08 (nineteen years ago)

What I said on the prisoner thread.

I remember loads of 70s and 80s aussie tv shows because my mum used to watch/tape them all.
I started school in 1977 and I can remember The Sullivans being on before that. Helen Daniels was in that!
One of her faves was A Country Practice. The one I really hated was Sons And Daughters(Helen Daniels was in that too!)
How many times did they roll out that long lost twin storyline. 2 Different characters got this storyline. One was Beryl I think. Forget who the other was but it was probably David.

Damn ive seen way too much aussie tv.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Thursday, 18 May 2006 21:11 (nineteen years ago)

me too

i loved sons and daughters. my brother and i used to watch it together and we had this rule that when the credit rolled (they would freeze frame the scene behind them) we had to freeze until the scene turned sepia. highly entertaining for a young kid. but i think with sons and daughters i started to feel like i was entitled to be a rich as the main chick, ally whatshername, and live in a spanish style mansion with creme shag carpeting and a wood bar and id walk around in suede minidresses and big plastic earrings and bare feet all day long. that shit was hot. and pat the rat was gold. it was almost an 80s bold and the beautiful when you think about it. i had no idea they did the twin thing with beryl though. i hated beryl. lower middle class stick in the mud.

sunny successor (katharine), Thursday, 18 May 2006 21:23 (nineteen years ago)

uncle junior????

sunny successor (katharine), Thursday, 18 May 2006 21:24 (nineteen years ago)

The twin thing was bad enough but to do it twice was unreal. I'm surprised they never gave the twins (one who was in Baywatch) a long lost triplet.

TS Original Patricia Vs the 2nd Patricia.

sunny successor (katharine), Thursday, 18 May 2006 21:34 (nineteen years ago)

was 2nd patrica rowena with a different personality or a new actor?

sunny successor (katharine), Thursday, 18 May 2006 21:35 (nineteen years ago)

also add that show where the chicks run a farm ranch thingy.

Fuckin' McLeods fucking fuck Daughters AARGH. Seriously, WHO WATCHES THAT SHITE. Every week the ads show some chick riding a horse, or some new chick learning to ride a horse; then you have some new guy in town giving one of the ladies a cheeky grin, someone looking bitchy/suspicious/worried, then an OH MY GOD *gunshot*/*horse falls off cliff*/*lady falls off horse*/*gun shoots lady off horse which then falls over cliff*.

Its like Mills and Boon written by Banjo Patterson.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 19 May 2006 02:33 (nineteen years ago)

E Street was really cool (mmm Marcus Graham).

I was also pretty into GP for a while there. What ever happened to it? Is it still going?

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 19 May 2006 02:53 (nineteen years ago)

nar that ended last decade sometime. i think i remember watching the final episode..

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Friday, 19 May 2006 02:56 (nineteen years ago)

Clearly nothing beats Neighbours though - especially not now it is so batshit insane every week :D

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 19 May 2006 02:57 (nineteen years ago)

haha yeah. i've missed the last two nights of it, i wonder what happened in the crash and also with steph

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Friday, 19 May 2006 02:58 (nineteen years ago)

also it sucks that skye isn't hot anymore

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Friday, 19 May 2006 02:59 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah I think I missed something with that crash - which was spectacularly daft. All Rob did was run off the road onto a grass verge. He didn't even hit a tree! And suddenly OMG Katya is knocked out? I presume he just insisted on taking her back home, but I missed the next day as well.

Skye is getting a bit shaggy and lumpy, or something.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 19 May 2006 03:03 (nineteen years ago)

the lumps are fine but the bad dye job isn't

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Friday, 19 May 2006 03:04 (nineteen years ago)

And Dylan! He was hot, now he's all greasy and looks like my alco ex. Blergh.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 19 May 2006 03:12 (nineteen years ago)

Hey can you get Sweet and Sour on DVD or anything? That would rule.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 19 May 2006 03:13 (nineteen years ago)

I actually know someone who had a SPEAKING PART in an episode of McLeod's Daughters. What a fantastic show. Who knew that farmers from Mid-North SA are hot babes in low-rider jeans?

The Notorious ESTEBAN BUTTEZ (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Friday, 19 May 2006 03:27 (nineteen years ago)

No! Neighbours spoilers from Oz!! Must look away, my eyes, etc.

chap who would dare to be a nerd, not a geek (chap), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:33 (nineteen years ago)

How far are we in the UK behind Oz with Neighbours?
I remember in the 80s we were 2 years behind.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:35 (nineteen years ago)

Aye, and some Aussie bastard spoiled Daphne dying for me!

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:37 (nineteen years ago)

It's only about six months now.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:39 (nineteen years ago)

"I love you too, Clarkey."

Oh fuck! Poor Des :(

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:39 (nineteen years ago)

I was in spain with my parents on holiday when the whole des/daphne not getting married thing was happening.
My whole school was in mourning when Daphne died. Neighbours really was HUGE back in the late 80s here wasn't it?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:51 (nineteen years ago)

I remember people going home from school at lunchtime to watch it before it got a tea time slot.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 19 May 2006 14:04 (nineteen years ago)

You can rest easy knowing nothing Australia produced was ever as bad as Shortland Street.

Mädchen (Madchen), Friday, 19 May 2006 14:12 (nineteen years ago)

I'm sure I've said this somewhere before, but a girl in my school asked the hairdresser to make her hair short and spiky on top, longer at the back, like Daphne on Neighbours. She gave her a grade 3 all over, with a weird neck fringe at the back.

As if that wasn't bad enough, she was in Chelsea Girl a few days later and was stopped from going into the changing rooms. "Er, excuse me, boys aren't allowed in there..."

Mädchen (Madchen), Friday, 19 May 2006 14:15 (nineteen years ago)

NOTHING will ever be as bad as River City.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Friday, 19 May 2006 14:19 (nineteen years ago)

Getting the hairdo right wouldn't have been much better.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 19 May 2006 14:21 (nineteen years ago)

Skyways=genius.

dr lulu (dr lulu), Friday, 19 May 2006 14:25 (nineteen years ago)

Did any other soaps have an episode like Bouncers Dream in neighbours?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Friday, 19 May 2006 21:27 (nineteen years ago)

!!!

what did he dream?

sunny successor (katharine), Saturday, 20 May 2006 05:51 (nineteen years ago)

i have TWO volumes of chances on DVD that I haven't watched!

lil' merzbow wow (haitch), Saturday, 20 May 2006 06:50 (nineteen years ago)

Sons and Daughters was classic. All the storylines with rich bitch Pat the Rat were like a cut-price Aussie version of Dynasty while the scenes at the Palmers' house (David cracking open a tinnie while homely, kaftan-wearing Beryl did the dusting) prefigured the "she'll be right mate" sunny sensibility of Neighbours.

And you'll got to love those episode endings where a character will look vaguely puzzled and apprehensive, then everything turns sepia and the theme music begins:

"Sons and daughters,
Love and laughter,
Tears and sadness and happiness...."

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Saturday, 27 May 2006 18:19 (nineteen years ago)

I still think Sky is hot, although she'd look a lot better if she dropped the blonde and went back to brunette with flecks of blue.

Also, I think Dylan looks like a young Bill-&-Ted-era Keanu Reeves. Am I wrong here?

Nick H (Nick H), Saturday, 27 May 2006 18:36 (nineteen years ago)

Dyaln's a good looking guy, but an atrocious actor and his hair is always filthy. Sky is fit, yeah, but her character is really starting to annoy me. Elle's pretty hot, and I've had twinges of unhealthy feelings for the Timmons mum. I know this is wrong.

chap who would dare to be a nerd, not a geek (chap), Saturday, 27 May 2006 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

Anyone remember Taurus Rising? Chances? Paradise Beach? I have a suspicion these lesser known soaps have been discussed before on ILE.

registered ratty (registered ratty), Sunday, 28 May 2006 00:36 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think that stuff reached here in the UK.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Sunday, 28 May 2006 00:50 (nineteen years ago)

i'd buy a dvd of sweet and sour in a heartbeat. is there one?

gem (trisk), Sunday, 28 May 2006 03:52 (nineteen years ago)

Same here - I dunno! I think it was on VHS... hang on ill check the ABC shop.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 28 May 2006 04:00 (nineteen years ago)

....no matches :(

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 28 May 2006 04:02 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
"i thought return to eden was a miniseries. that the one where the rich chick gets her face bi"

Return To Eden started off as a mini-series, and a couple of years later was revived as an ongoing series. The heroine was attacked by a crocodile yet again and faked her death and disappeared again too. The complete set of Return To Eden is available on DVD in Australia.

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Thursday, 13 July 2006 10:39 (nineteen years ago)

No sign of Sweet And Sour though. Sorry, Trayce.

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Thursday, 13 July 2006 10:45 (nineteen years ago)

I'd settle just for a remastered version of the Sweet and Sour soundtrack. The theme song is the BEST SONG EVAH.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 13 July 2006 11:17 (nineteen years ago)

This book appears to be the definitive work regarding all Aussie soaps:

We're interviewing new housemates this weekend (fuuuuuuuuuck what a pain) and the only two questions we've come up with are:

1. What do you watch at 6:30? (full marks for neighbors, partial credit sbs news, 0 marks for today tonight/a current affair/whatevers on abc)
2. Who should win big brother? (full marks camilla)

badg (badg), Thursday, 13 July 2006 23:39 (nineteen years ago)

haha i have an extremely shameful crush on camilla :(

electric sound of jim [and why not] (electricsound), Thursday, 13 July 2006 23:39 (nineteen years ago)

I really wish I hadn't been working so late recently, I've been missing all the batshit insane Cameron/Robert murderous twin crap on Neighbours.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 14 July 2006 01:25 (nineteen years ago)

electric sound of jim [and why not] (electricsound), Friday, 14 July 2006 01:31 (nineteen years ago)

waht!

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 14 July 2006 01:46 (nineteen years ago)

a gnarden gnome. slightly smaller, balder and less irish

electric sound of jim [and why not] (electricsound), Friday, 14 July 2006 01:49 (nineteen years ago)

But a veiled Connor-related threat nonetheless

badg (badg), Friday, 14 July 2006 02:29 (nineteen years ago)

Man, I need to set the HD recorder up to record Neigbours. I'm missing out.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 14 July 2006 02:50 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah the new lunatic plotlines are hilarious! They had russian consulate officials on this week dressed like 1950s gumshoes, speaking actual russian (they had subtitles)

badg (badg), Friday, 14 July 2006 03:43 (nineteen years ago)

bahahaha

electric sound of jim [and why not] (electricsound), Friday, 14 July 2006 03:43 (nineteen years ago)

electric sound of jim [and why not] (electricsound), Friday, 14 July 2006 03:43 (nineteen years ago)

It does doesnt it? Tho she needs to do something with her hair - she looks like she's wearing the kind of wig someone going on Jerry Springer would wear :/

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 14 July 2006 04:54 (nineteen years ago)

four weeks pass...
A box set of Sons And Daughters, called "The Best of Pat The Rat", is out on DVD (in Australia) on 9th October.

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Saturday, 12 August 2006 16:38 (nineteen years ago)

And a volume of The Young Doctors will be out in November.

The company, Umbrella Entertainment, are also asking people to vote for their favourite shows for DVD release: http://www.umbrellaent.com.au/vote.html
