Explain the Unkillable: "7th Heaven"

Back for another season after all. The only thing I vaguely remember about this series is that one of the actresses playing a daughter decided to pose for risque photos in an attempt at a more dangerous image (a la Elizabeth Berkley, I guess).

i think freebasing at the premiere party for a recent film of hers might have been better in that regard [/item]

Conservatives control the media, ensuring the "family friendly" pablum pushing religious values down the nation's collective throat, while acerbic, off-color comedies such as Arrested Development get cut off at the knees.

That's my theory, anyway.

pleased to mitya (mitya), Friday, 19 May 2006 01:03 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, clearly the Nielsen ratings were sabotaged.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 19 May 2006 01:06 (nineteen years ago)

Hey, Ned, if the right wing can change the whole context of discussion by talking nonsense often enough, I'm happy to play the same game going the other way.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 19 May 2006 01:22 (nineteen years ago)

I can't wait until the mourning period for Arrested Development is over. Save the pity for a good show getting cancelled before its time (like Deadwood).

milo z (mlp), Friday, 19 May 2006 02:29 (nineteen years ago)

7th heaven is a creepy fucking show. especially stoned. or so i've heard.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 19 May 2006 02:39 (nineteen years ago)

their house is a house of horrors. people stumble into it asking for directions and then the whole zombie family jumps on top of them trying to search for weakness and blood. and then they are trapped forever and have to live there and pretend that they don't want to leave. it's frightening.

This show is the best thing going on television, as far as quality bad acting goes. Everyone (including actors doing one-time guest spots) delivers their lines in the same weird stilted cadences...and they are forced to constantly regurgitate the same pet phrases that the scriptwriter(s) seem so fond of using. In every episode, there will be at least one instance of a character saying "for a minute there I thought that you were [x, where x=pregnant, having an abortion, quitting school, shacking up, etc.]. (pause, followed by furrowed brow indicating grave concern) You aren't planning on doing [x}, are you? (another pause, as concern switches to a look of near-exasperation) [insert character's name]!Please tell me you're not planning on [doing x]!"

MOM: Oh that is such a relief, Simon...for a moment there I thought you were going to tell me that you were quitting school. (pause for several beats as she scans Simon's tentative expression) You aren't planning on quitting school, are you? Simon! Please tell me you're not planning on quitting school!

They had odd "theme" episodes during the would-be final season-- one show had all this Gershwin stuff running through it; while another had a running thread concerning how the different characters ate their Oreo cookies.

I find it much more entertaining than say, The O.C.

Dell (Dell), Friday, 19 May 2006 22:05 (nineteen years ago)

I liked the one about smokers best.
Where this girl is a house-sitter and smokes and then the leaves a cigarette burning and the house completely burns down.

clodia pulchra (emo by proxy), Saturday, 20 May 2006 10:07 (nineteen years ago)

In a weird way, it's thoroughly watchable. Not quite sure why - the characters and stories are oddly alluring.

THIS SHOW IS WORSE THAN AIDS AND HITLER PUT TOGETHER

When I read this I immediately thought of what could've been the Village Peoples' darkest music video ever.

Cunga (Cunga), Monday, 5 June 2006 04:41 (nineteen years ago)

my favorite episode is when the old band shows up and tries to get dad to sing again. it was like peter tork, jon arbuckle, tom waits and stephen stills as the band i think. anyway peter tork is staying in his van in their front yard and the little annoying kid smells weed. it ended uip being incense and he was sober for 10 years!

see im not lying. from dads website:
http://www.stephencollins.com/himself/scpetertorkm.jpg
"This is a photo which would have utterly blown my mind if you could have shown it to me in 1965, when The Monkees ruled. At left, on bass guitar, is former Monkee Peter Tork, and that's me on the right, playing my '68 Fender Thinline Telecaster (an amazing birthday present from '7th Heaven' producer Brenda Hampton). Peter and I were playing on the back lot of the '7th Heaven' set, at the party celebrating '7th Heaven's' 100th Episode, November 16, 2000. The two other, unseen, band members were Keith Alison (formerly of Paul Revere & The Raiders) on lead guitar, and David Glen Eisley (Foreigner) on drums. The band was assembled for an episode on season 3 of '7th Heaven,' in which Eric Camden's old high school band comes back to town. At that time, we recorded a cover of 'Sunshine of Your Love,' which we sang on the show. The guys came back for a cameo on the 100th episode, and then graciously joined me to play a one hour set at the party."

chaki (chaki), Monday, 5 June 2006 06:23 (nineteen years ago)

I haven't watched this in years, but I thought it was interesting at one time. There was somewhat of an open-minded and progressive aspect to the show, I thought.

in its own desperate and transparent way it was a very conservative show, cynically designed to appeal to middle-american fundies

that the dad was a lech/pedophile is only too perfect in relation to the show, though obviously horrible in any real sense

I dunno. (amateurist), Wednesday, 8 October 2014 21:39 (eleven years ago)

so idg are the suicide and Goldberg's death related

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 8 October 2014 21:40 (eleven years ago)

goldberg was i think so deeply affected by the news of collins' death and still so confused over the possible pending charges that she dropped dead.
