GOODBYE 20 OPEN WINDOWS

Yes, middle button clicking is The Future.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:09 (nineteen years ago)

a: because you were used to ie
this feature is fundamental! middle click everything. xpst

sleep (sleep), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:10 (nineteen years ago)

But... they're just windows in a different form - AND they don't appear on the task bar so it takes one further click to access them.

Seriously, please explain why they're great, someone?

Crimea River (Mark C), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:11 (nineteen years ago)

i can just flip around my tabs and refresh threads rather than hunt for something in a squeezed vertical column with most of the headers chopped off.

TECHNOLOGY!

and there are lot's of other sites, but all of them are fake... (sanskrit), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:18 (nineteen years ago)

I love me tabs. They are so handy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:20 (nineteen years ago)

AND they don't appear on the task bar so it takes one further click to access them.

I think it makes more sense to have a "window" on teh internet, almost like a separate OS, for ease of browsing without having that extra layer of your underlying OS to deal with.

Also, it is really, really easy to lose track of multiple processes on the task bar.

PLUS! You can set up a set of tabs as your home*pages*, so that everytime you start your browser you can easly scan through your most important sites.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:23 (nineteen years ago)

I was thinking the exact same thing shortly after getting firefox!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:27 (nineteen years ago)

whoa i didn't know middle click did it, i thought it was right click -> open link in new tab

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:29 (nineteen years ago)

You can set up a set of tabs as your home*pages*

What! How did I never notice this.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:29 (nineteen years ago)

ctrl-tab / ctrl-shift-tab

WOW WOW WOW!

After feeling so pleased for threadstarter, knowing the greatness of the tab-function myself, I just learned ON THIS THREAD you can open a tab by CLICKING THE FUCKING SCROLLWHEEL! AAAAAAh, even MORE greatness!

(xpost w/ caitlin, nice to know I wasn't alone on this)

Gerard (Gerard), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:46 (nineteen years ago)

in opera you can flip between tabs by pressing 1 and 2 on the keyboard. I recommend changing the keys in firefox to these, it's rilly good.

a.b. (alanbanana), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:48 (nineteen years ago)

you can also close tabs by middle clicking on them

a.b. (alanbanana), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:51 (nineteen years ago)

Installing the mouse gestures plug-in makes switching between tabs a dawdle as well.

scotstvo (scotstvo), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:53 (nineteen years ago)

I recommend changing the keys in firefox to these

how do you do that?

you can also ctrl-# to jump to a specific tab, but i never use this.

sleep (sleep), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:53 (nineteen years ago)

If I press my wheel, I can roll this thread's content like I was on board ship.

I may throw up.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:54 (nineteen years ago)

you can also close tabs by middle clicking on them

didn't know that! also ctrl-w closes current tab fwiw.

sleep (sleep), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:54 (nineteen years ago)

(and ctrl-t for new blank tab as long as i'm listing random shortcuts. most of these can be seen in the dropdown menus)

sleep (sleep), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:56 (nineteen years ago)

It's how I get ilx started in the morning. Open up about a dozen threads, watch the wheels start spinning, and then go get the coffee.

THIS IS WHY WE HAVE POXY FULES

JW (ex machina), Friday, 19 May 2006 15:32 (nineteen years ago)

holy shit the wheel click

i love highlighting a word & googling it straight from the contextual menu instead of new window > open google etc etc etc

and what (ooo), Friday, 19 May 2006 15:45 (nineteen years ago)

THIS IS WHY WE HAVE POXY FULES

Oh, only if EVERYONE does it.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Friday, 19 May 2006 15:46 (nineteen years ago)

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 19 May 2006 15:47 (nineteen years ago)

aaaaaaah! (another middleclick novice.)

man why does ff tell u how to do everything ever but never bothers to mention this minor godsend? way more useful than the 40 shitty extensions i've accumulated

Wow I've used tabs forever but I've learned so much from this thread! Tabs rule!

Cracks (Crackity), Friday, 19 May 2006 18:37 (nineteen years ago)

i love highlighting a word & googling it straight from the contextual menu instead of new window > open google etc etc etc

OMG I didnt know FF did that. Thats brilliant!

I love the extentions as well - the search dropdown box on the upper right so you can jump right to wikipedia or imdb or whatever... the weather bar, and adblock! I love adblock.

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 20 May 2006 03:06 (nineteen years ago)

safari does that as well.

I've always used safari tabs, with the space kept for tabs even if there aren't any tabs so it doesn't seem to change when you open a tab.

Much better to open tabs BEHIND as well. I come accross a link, it's like saying, hey link, I'm a gonna look at you later!

Safari tabs you close by clicking on the x on the tab, the default in firefox has the close tab at the side of the window. I much prefer safari.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 20 May 2006 04:03 (nineteen years ago)

wtf is a "MIDDLE CLICK"

all i know is: ctrl+t

killy ii (baby lenin pin), Saturday, 20 May 2006 05:04 (nineteen years ago)

press the scroll wheel

sleep (sleep), Saturday, 20 May 2006 05:06 (nineteen years ago)

o...... i have no scroll wheel. u_u

killy ii (baby lenin pin), Saturday, 20 May 2006 05:13 (nineteen years ago)

you can also ctrl-# to jump to a specific tab, but i never use this.

i never use it in ff but i use it in adium allll the time.

the one thing i haven't been able to get to work is to get search results in a new tab like you can in safari.

my scroll wheel has many options in the configuring, but open in new tab is not one of them :(

^^
How my tabs are set up

naus (Robert T), Saturday, 20 May 2006 06:44 (nineteen years ago)

Explain me the difference between "oh noes I have a million three-character-titled buttons at the bottom of my screen" (which only happens if you don't collate all IE windows together) and "oh noes I have a million three-character-titled tabs at the top of my browser".

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Saturday, 20 May 2006 10:16 (nineteen years ago)

tabs display the faveicons, so that already makes it easier.
And it is easier to search horizontally in the tabs list than in the bottom of my taskbar, where all windows are collected together.

clodia pulchra (emo by proxy), Saturday, 20 May 2006 10:22 (nineteen years ago)

wow! thanks naus (et al) i didn't realize Safari did this. Why does my preferences tab only show the top three check boxes and nothing from "Open in New Tab for Target Link" - accordinto to Apple I'm running the most recent version (2.0.3)?

pleased to mitya (mitya), Saturday, 20 May 2006 11:35 (nineteen years ago)

tabbrowser preferences extension in firefox is the jam

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 20 May 2006 15:09 (nineteen years ago)

Mitya, those are the tab preferences for the Shiira browser. It uses the same page-rendering technology as Safari, but is way more customizable. I like it because you can press F8 and it will show every tab Exposé-style and the fact that when you close a tab, you can have it go back to the last one you were at.

naus (Robert T), Saturday, 20 May 2006 15:26 (nineteen years ago)

The web browser I use is called "Galeon", and the one big reason I use it is that it lets you put the tabs themselves down any side of the window. Having the tabs listed vertically makes life much easier when you have lots open.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Monday, 22 May 2006 05:23 (nineteen years ago)

having a million ile and slashdot tabs open doesn't impinge on actual work the way having a million windows open does 8) i can still see my netbeans buttons and cygwin buttons and, er, winamp buttons for instance, they aren't lost in a forest of IE buttons.

you can make that bar at the bottom several buttons deep btw, to give yourself more room.

koogs (koogs), Monday, 22 May 2006 09:17 (nineteen years ago)

is this like a small screen shot of the contents of each tab?
There is an extension for firefox that does that, but for f12.

clodia pulchra (emo by proxy), Monday, 22 May 2006 13:04 (nineteen years ago)

I don't use Firefox (never "got" extensions), but yeah, I think it's the same. They have a video of it on their site:

naus (Robert T), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 01:36 (nineteen years ago)

and besides that, F12 is the key for Dashboard, where you can run Shiira as a widget!

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 02:44 (nineteen years ago)

Sharkira - 5'2"
Ciara - 5'9.5"

A midget is a politically-incorrect term for a dwarf whose body is proportionate. A dwarf is somebody shorter than 4'2".

7 is indeed a digit.

naus (Robert T), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 04:57 (nineteen years ago)

i am writing this as i am hurtling down the highway at around 80mph (i'm not driving). using something called a cellular wi fi card. never knew they existed.
