What shoes should I get?

I know this sounds like a gareth thread (I'm sorry but its true, you eevn mentioend it when we met in the street on saturday).

I have a hole i n my shoes and I need another pair before I can get this ones fixed. I trolled all yesterday and couldn't find what I wanted (a pair of caper boots the same as the ones I own but a different colour but they don't exist). I have freakish narrow feet so very few shoes fit me well anyway.

Ed, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Get some 'fuck me' high heeled boots.

N., Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Espadrilles.

Jonnie, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i considered asking "MENG: how many pairs o shoes have you?" as this w/e I managed to trash my 1 good pair (for work), and with my 1 pair o trainers at work (for the lunchtime jogging) I had to come in to work in emergency crap deck-shoes style things.

Managed to trash shoes by going on ill-advised rural walk in the pouring (nay, horizontally slashing) rain. So now I need walking boots, AND new work/regular shoes, so more answers please.

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

2 pairs???? lightweight

chris, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm stealing DG's answer:

You can't go wrong with DM's!

jel, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I can get two of my feet side by side in a DM. They are wide, heavy and uncomfortable, (plus they make my feet smell).

Ed, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Also, they're shit.

N., Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wear very thick socks. And Odour Eaters.

In fact the original 'how many pairs of trousers do you have' conversation did move on to 'how many pairs of shoes do you have', the average being about 2-3 compared to my 30 or so (which isn't too bad for a girl, I reckon, really quite restrained).

Emma, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Walking boots, I love my zamberlans. They are good and narrow, well made and have lasted for ages, (since '98 with heavy use).

Ed, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

5 pairs of shoes, 28 pairs of trainers. If I had to wear shoes to work I think I'd have a lot more pairs, but fortunately I don't.

chris, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You go to work barefoot? Hippy!

Emma, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

no Emma, I wear trainers which are not shoes. and I thought it was proved by science that you were the board's official hippy?

chris, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hmmm. While I have no desire to be a hippy, being an OFFICIAL hippy is another kettle of fish.

Trainers, shoes, whatever. For the purposes the 'how many pairs of shoes do you have' thing, trainers count UNLESS they are trainers worn only in the gym / for sports. Slippers don't count either.

Emma, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

33 then, idn't count my footy boots and trainers anyway.

chris, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Also, they're [DMs] shit."
Wha-? This is mentalist speak.

DG, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

DMs are shit, they are just plain ugly shoes, about as stylish as a kaftan that smells of patchouli.

chris, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bah. I shall not listen to this HERESY.

DG, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Don't worry, DG, you'll grow out of it.

Emma, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes, just look at Dr. C.

N., Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You won't catch me in a pair of trainers.

DG, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That's what's so good about them. It's not all 'fashion' you know.

N., Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

[that was a running joke]

N., Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

[[I meant literally 'running' but now I see that I have made a terrific pun]]

N., Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But what other sort of shoes ARE there? (I don't like 'growing out' of things btw, N.)

In favour of Docs : they're wide, they polish up nicely and scuffs come out OK. They have air cushioned soles. They're (takes off right Doc and looks at sole) oil/fat/petrol/acid/alkali resistant. Does acid resistant mean you can't TRIP? Geddit!

Also they're useful if you need to kick someone or a dog. Or a West Ham fan. Or stamping on indie-schmindie pointy boots.

Dr. C, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have no idea how many pairs of shoes my wife has. I stopped counting when I hit 60.

I have 5 pairs of shoes that I currently wear, but I think there are something like 15 pairs scattered around the house. I should probably get rid of the useless 10 I'm never going to put on again.

Dan Perry, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I stopped counting when I hit 60.

Alzheimer's?

N., Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hooray for Dr C!

DG, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I own only trainers. I can't wear shoes, they all look silly to me. Although I did have to wear them over Christmas at blacktie thing I was at so I borrowed my brothers.

Sometimes I have to say "no I don't wear shoes" as an excuse when our class is going to some shitty "you must wear shoes" nightclub. It's all a bit embarassing but I still won't wear them. I have about 5 pairs of trainers.

Ronan, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Alzheimer's?

If you look very closely, you will see the giant hammer I am visualizing appearing over your head...

Dan Perry, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dan, you're confusing psionic powers for D&D characters with real life again.

Shoes, pairs of -- I think have around four. I prefer my black Reebok sneakers.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Actually, it's a reference to a Doctor Who novel, which is equally sad.

Dan Perry, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

trainers for training

sneakers for sneaking?

Ed, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Remember the brief Hush Puppy craze in the post-Grunge hangover period? Market researchers were able to trace the consumer blip back to a window-rattling collective shudder and wince amongst the indie massive after Kirk Kobaine's suicide in Converse One-Stars. "I would not want to die like that sprawled and sacrificial, at least not in a pair of child's kickball shoes like those I wouldn't", we thought to ourselves. your next birfday cheque from Gran went on a pair of brown or black suede hush puppy substitute teacher shoes, a combustible edison record and your first Bombay Gin martini. "Fuck this K records life I've been leading", you told yourself as the bartender maraca'ed your blue highball into a high-stemmed glass. "I was not meant to live amongst the horn-rimmed suicides of my generation. My imported skinhead boot days are over, my celibate days are over, my bip- bopping one-star days are over. These hush puppies on my feet will walk me down the aisle, walk me up the ladder to the olde style steakhouse of busty broads and cigars and martoonies but it'll be hipper than grandad's, with DJ's and lesbians and Charlie Manson jokes and cocaine."

yves, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yves has managed to articulate precisely the reasons why I own one pair of brown, and one pair of black suede Hush Puppies (bought at 1/3rd-off retail from a mall in Arlington, VA, July '99).

Michael Jones, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I had you in mind.

Yves Montand, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't, nor would I ever, own Hush Puppies, but I very much like Yves' post.

Sean, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like it too. Yves must post more, please.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Get some red ankle boots like Vincent Gallo's in "Buffalo '66"

Mandee, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tune in tomorrow for "Terrorsex in Camel-colored Wallabees" when Yves finds yourself in adultoriously gloriously full-colour trouble when an ever-alert bouncer detects muffled sounds of passion from the nite klub fire-escape.

Yves Montand, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I got a pair of DMs in high school and they managed to articulate precisely against a TINY BONE in my heel that became so painful so quickly that I, no lie, had to walk with a cane for a week.

Only shoes I've got now are brown leather no-names with a good sole for walking, and a pair of sneakers that I threw outside after getting dog doo on the bottom. I think they're still out there.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

don't get sandals cos then they won't let you into The Mission. or maybe you don't wanna get into the mission, that place is a stinking cesspool of skankadelica

di, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wayne Hussey doesn't like sandals?

Dan Perry, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

He's a goth/hippie, but he ain't *that* hippie.

*cue random Wayne lyrical moment* "Let SLEEP-ING DOOOOGS DIIIIIIIIIIE." Oh dear.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 28 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I already own a pair of jesus creepers but its stoo damn cold to wear them without stout socks at the moment. (Now there's an idea....)

Ed, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My god, think of the children! Socks and sandals, what is the world coming to?

Nicole, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have freakish narrow feet so very few shoes fit me well anyway.

I think you need some clown shoes. Are your feet very long too? I like the idea that you can fit two of your feet side by side in a DM.

Steve.n., Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What about something by Clark's (desert-booty range not the 'sensible' range). They do different width fittings as well.

David Inglesfield, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Clarks was going to be my "real" answer, so I agree.

Nicole, Tuesday, 29 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yo ed. desert boots = timeless classic, and not exorbitantly expensive (hmm, is that spelt right?). i aspire to owning a pair myself one day.

there is *nothing* wrong with socks and sandles, puddles are a problem yes, but let's have no more of this visible sock discrimination.

I need sandals! I'm going to the beach and I want great shoes. Black or red, heel isn't important, none of that crap where you have to tie strings around your calf. Bluefly is not helping me!

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 22 January 2004 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Tsk, that damn Bluefly.

the ones on top are awesome but the color doesn't match anything I own, the ones on the bottom are too expensive.

Revizzle!
I've been wearing Reebok Classics for the past two years because they're the most comfortable shoes I've ever worn. They're pretty much destroyed now, and I don't think I'd get another pair, just because I feel like they look a little silly.

What're some relatively cheap, relatively comfortable shoes (sneakers, tennis shoes, oxfords, whatevah) that won't associate me with specific subcultures the way chucks, reeboks, or doc martens would. Ok, that sounds dumb, but honestly I've been dressing like a mid-90s indie rocker for way too long.

BLUE!

Abbott, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 20:30 (eighteen years ago)

I have very fond memories of the black ones because it seemed every bloke I fancied in 1995 was wearing them.

Madchen, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 22:09 (eighteen years ago)

I just got these:

ecco shoes!

[i work for ecco, so i may be somewhat biased - but they are they most comfortable shoes i've ever worn]

although i think british and US stores only sell a limited range, and only the ultra-conservative styles.

Rubyred, Sunday, 17 June 2007 22:15 (eighteen years ago)

Milo, I'd go for the second pair. :-)

jhøshea, Thursday, 16 August 2007 16:11 (eighteen years ago)

I think wedges look weird, then again I never look at girls shoes, except to see if they are sensible or not, and I cry a little inside when I discover that they are not.

Ed, Thursday, 16 August 2007 16:14 (eighteen years ago)

these are impractical and i will regret buying y/n

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 16 August 2007 16:15 (eighteen years ago)

Those pink things are impractical and just looking at them makes my feet hurt, but my god, they are beautiful.

Masonic Boom, Thursday, 16 August 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

I really love the first ones. the pink ones are kind of impractical, yeah.

horseshoe, Thursday, 16 August 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

maybe just a bit toooo much, possibly sexy

these bows tho. if you took them off the shoes would look so weird. but then im not sure i like teh floppy contrast to smooth lines. looks like maybe someone found that spot initially problematic, plopped down a bow and said "there".

jhøshea, Thursday, 16 August 2007 16:26 (eighteen years ago)

Look, this is going to be controversial but *all* Ecco shoes are too frumpy for me. They're like some bad mix between Naturalizer and Nine West. Also apart from my stunner pair of Berlin secondhand heels I cannot be doing with open-toe anything because I've spent entirely too much time looking at the hoary Claw Toes of middle-aged Bingo Lady types, and also if you get caught in the rain SQUELCH.

Ed, nobody is asking you to understand wedges.

Non-sensible shoes are those which cannot withstand a run for the bus, which in my case means four-inch heels are in the 'sensible' category.

suzy, Thursday, 16 August 2007 19:03 (eighteen years ago)

I like the first two pairs, Allz. Where are they from?

Virginia Plain, Thursday, 16 August 2007 19:09 (eighteen years ago)

The pink ones are great, the other two pair are just extremely meh. Impractical? Yeah, most probably, but extremely sexee'n'cute.

The first pair is just a bit too low for a wedge. The second pair are just... no. Like a slapped on fabric print.

stevienixed, Thursday, 16 August 2007 19:11 (eighteen years ago)

I got some peep-toe wedges recently but have only worn them once. I like the first ones and always love pink.

stevienixed, Thursday, 16 August 2007 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

aw, I like a low wedge.

I'm basically saying the pink is impractical because whenever I buy things in that shade I chicken out of wearing them. but they are v. cute.
