Somewhere fairly loungy, you know. With sofas! Preferably near Clapham or Whitechapel. Who can suggest some(fucking)where?

Are you trying to gentrify ILE?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 21 May 2006 13:37 (nineteen years ago)

Buy The Independent on Sunday it's better and easier to read !

[Even though today they increased the price by 10p and made no reference to it in the actual newspaper.]

one of those coffee places on brick lane (near the top end, on your left if you're walking from whitechapel, near the beigel shops) has lovely old knackered sofas, very decent coffee and you don't even have to provide your own observer. in summer, that little park just south of bethnal green road and east of brick lane is wonderful. everyone SMILES at each other in there.

emsk ( emsk), Sunday, 21 May 2006 14:33 (nineteen years ago)

Thank you emsk.

I have absolutely no idea why people read the Independent. To me it's as gimmicky, dull and inconsequential as a free newspaper. It seems to attract those who are too clever for the Times but who for some inexplicable reason won't buy the Guardian or the Observer.

I'd hope that nobody around these parts reads the Sunday Times. I've always really liked the fact that you can immediately tell if someone is 4 REAL! or not by the Sunday newspaper they read.

Odd you should mention the price of the Independent though, I'm recently developed a theory that the price of the Observer goes up by 10p a week but no-one ever seems to notice.

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Sunday, 21 May 2006 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

all the sunday newspapers are annoying in their own special ways but bitching about the observer's continuing rapid descent into mind-bogglingly shit is somehow a lot more satisfying. also the actual news section of the observer is still good! it's just all the, y'know, extras.

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 21 May 2006 15:50 (nineteen years ago)

i like the independent because it puts stories i think are important on its front cover. simplistic, yes yes i know, but still. i refuse to buy the observer when it's sport monthly week. meant to get the indy today for the spanish phrasebook but suspect the shop across the road will have sold out... it's shitty and raining and i just cycled halfway up holloway road and back to recycle all the plastic... can i be arsed to go out again...

Yesterday while the Independent was giving away the somewhat ambitious 'Learn Spanish in one day' CD, the D*ily Ma*l was giving away 'Learn Spanish in a week'.

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Sunday, 21 May 2006 17:38 (nineteen years ago)

The Daily Star are apparently giving away 'Learn Spanish in a decade'.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 21 May 2006 22:19 (nineteen years ago)

The Sun are giving away 'Learn Spanish in five minutes', which consists of the word 'beer' being repeated at increasing volume.

The Observer is plummeting so incredibly quickly. The Berliner format isn't good either, as the obvious comparisions to the Guardian don't help the paper one bit.

stet (stet), Sunday, 21 May 2006 23:31 (nineteen years ago)

The Observer Woman's Monthly (ahem) is rubbish, mostly consisting of articles about men written by, erm, men. A wasted opportunity.

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Monday, 22 May 2006 05:12 (nineteen years ago)

haha emsk the observer sports monthly is BRILLIANT and i always buy the observer for it. the writing is so good that i even read some of the football stories sometimes!

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 22 May 2006 07:37 (nineteen years ago)

but i have no interest in reading about sport. there are approx 856709356754 other things i have waiting for me to read them that i actually give a shit about!

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 22 May 2006 16:12 (nineteen years ago)

The music monthly keeps going from weakness to weakness.

Best things about the Observer: 'This much I know' in the mag, and Armando Iannuci's column.

chap who would dare to be a nerd, not a geek (chap), Monday, 22 May 2006 16:18 (nineteen years ago)

also jay rayner's restuarant reviews. andrew rawnsley is less reliably excellent than he used to be but i never abandon old crushes really.

emsk, i have no interest in sports other than tennis, but even then osm usually wins me over! the writing is amazing, and i wish omm had an ounce of its passion. as for the women supplement, it is quite appalling.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 22 May 2006 16:20 (nineteen years ago)

i only read the food stuff these days. i don't think i'm missing out.

toby (tsg20), Monday, 22 May 2006 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, the food is the best monthly (well, the sport might be better, but I have zero interest in sport). Nigel Slater's got some tasty recipes.

I read The Sunday Times. And after being exposed to the shockingly inept journalism in the ever-juvenile Observer, I don't think that's going to change any time soon.

David Orton (scarlet), Monday, 22 May 2006 18:27 (nineteen years ago)

The Sunday papers in general are now so inept I hardly bother with any of them. Particularly the Sunday Times, which I see is still being run by the same old clique they had in place a decade ago - the AA Gills and what have you, dead thoughts from dried-up pens.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 07:48 (nineteen years ago)

The Sunday Times has the best travel section. Also bookwise and their news team dip into the archaeology journals far more that the other Sundays, hence some great stories which are amusingly tempered with reaction from academics.

The Observer travel section is so concerned with ethical travelling, it forbids itself to go anywhere.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 08:52 (nineteen years ago)

The Observer also discontinued their S&M agony column, which I found most irksome.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 09:18 (nineteen years ago)

I noticed that it was only actually titled "S&M" for one week.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 10:25 (nineteen years ago)

(but it *was* rubbish - the bloke in particular was very very annoying)

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 10:25 (nineteen years ago)

oh god the sex column was vile.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 11:25 (nineteen years ago)
