where you watching the world cup aka the 'lets all go to the pub and watch football' thread

i'm after reccomendations for somewhere that might let you book a table mainly for the trinidad/england match in central london but thought others might face similar predicaments of where to go

secondhandnews (secondhandnews), Monday, 22 May 2006 11:34 (nineteen years ago)

Dunno, I'd be surprised if there were many places that would let you book considering they're pretty much guaranteed to be packed. The Blue Posts on Newman Street and The Agricultural in Islington are two of my favoured football-watching spots in recent years, although anywhere with decent sightlines of a big screen suits me.

Although I'm planning to watch as many of the England games as possible at home/at a friends house, should we use this thread to organise World Cup fapping when the time comes?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 22 May 2006 11:49 (nineteen years ago)

London-centric World Cup Fapping only?

I note that the first England game falls on Onimo's birthday, so some Glaswegian dividing lines can be set up, with Alba and Madchen on one side and the rest of us on the other.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 22 May 2006 11:52 (nineteen years ago)

I noticed at the weekend that Odeon cinemas are going to be showing all England games. You'll doubtless have to pay and I don't know if you can take drink in there but it'll be a good view.

Bidfurd (Bidfurd), Monday, 22 May 2006 11:54 (nineteen years ago)

London-centric World Cup Fapping only?

Any sort of World Cup fapping!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 22 May 2006 12:08 (nineteen years ago)

er, anyone fancy a Berlin FAP on June 23rd?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 22 May 2006 12:11 (nineteen years ago)

the Odeon thing is probably intended more for families, screamin kids etc. neat idea tho

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 22 May 2006 12:12 (nineteen years ago)

I'm watching Korea v Togo in the Waldstadion, Frankfurt.

JohnFoxxsJuno (JohnFoxxsJuno), Monday, 22 May 2006 12:14 (nineteen years ago)

Last time Alba and I watched a few matches in the Walkabout, which has a huge screen, places to sit (chairs if you get there early enough, floor if you don't) and was sufficiently neutral. I hear their big screen is HD ready, so our enjoyment will be enhanced by the sight of beads of sweat on our teenage hero's spotty brow. It's the only time I'd recommend a Walkabout, mind.

Mädchen (Madchen), Monday, 22 May 2006 12:14 (nineteen years ago)

Between 16th and 24th June I am watching the Woirld Cup in a hotal lobby in Venice :/

Crimea River (Mark C), Monday, 22 May 2006 12:31 (nineteen years ago)

I think the Odeon will be full of seat-slashing menkos on the rampage.

I am not going to watch the World Cup, I don't think.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 22 May 2006 12:33 (nineteen years ago)

London and Spain for me. I have two weddings to attend though, one on the second quarter finals day, the other on 3rd/4th place play off.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Monday, 22 May 2006 12:52 (nineteen years ago)

What sort of heathen gets married while the World Cup is on?

I have a 30th birthday party to attend on 17th June, but the invitation stated it would be Football Friendly.

Mädchen (Madchen), Monday, 22 May 2006 13:13 (nineteen years ago)

Anyone know of a Japanese pub in London that might show the Japan games and also have some kind of atmosphere? I need to convince the (Japanese) missus that it'll be better than watching them at home. Failing that, I'll take her to the Unicorn on Brecknock Road or an estate pub in Beckton for the England games (maybe not).

Matt #2 (Matt #2), Monday, 22 May 2006 13:41 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not sure there are ANY pubs in Central London that are truly satisfactory for watching football in. But this may be a little harsh/ignorant.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 22 May 2006 13:42 (nineteen years ago)

odeon sounds good but i imagine would have a lack of alcoholic, always a negative

the duke of york cinema in brighton did a eurovision one where you could drink, i imagine that'd be a great laugh

secondhandnews (secondhandnews), Monday, 22 May 2006 14:20 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not sure there are ANY pubs in Central London that are truly satisfactory for watching football in.

actually i like The Angel near Old St. but only when it's quiet - should serve me well as it's v near my work.

that Offside bar on City Road may also get a look-in.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 22 May 2006 14:22 (nineteen years ago)

NB the Blue Posts Newman St hasn't had a telly in for a year and a half, it was (the first?) part of the great sam smiths "lets make our pubs as dreadful as possible" drive...

i hear that Dr C's band are playing at the Bull and Gate on the night of the England/Trini match, which will be shown before the bands (including FRANK SIDEBOTTOM) start...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 22 May 2006 14:32 (nineteen years ago)

I reckon you could easily BYO to the Odeon. Our Odeon has closed down because of the World's Tallest Cinema.

Mädchen (Madchen), Monday, 22 May 2006 14:41 (nineteen years ago)

For Euro 2004 I took a load of Swiss students with me to watch England beat Switzerland at that bar above The End. No tables, no chairs, nothing, just a high-ceilinged room with a balcony, and a *massive* screen, and everyone crammed in standing up facing the scream and shouting. A bit like on the terraces, but flat, and inside, and with people holding pints. Or a bit like something out of 1984.

Teh HoBBercraft (the pirate king), Monday, 22 May 2006 15:27 (nineteen years ago)

Ha! "facing the scream"
I think you know what I meant.

Teh HoBBercraft (the pirate king), Monday, 22 May 2006 15:29 (nineteen years ago)

I was in there on Saturday - I can imagine that being awesome.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 22 May 2006 15:29 (nineteen years ago)

Our Odeon has closed down because of the World's Tallest Cinema.

There's still another Odeon in Glasgow. Though watching football in the cinema sounds utterly pointless when pubs with big tellies exist (I have no kids and am teh selfish, also I like pubs).

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 22 May 2006 17:46 (nineteen years ago)

My spider senses told me this would be Kelv's thread. I am also gonna need WC locations in central london although will probably be working somewhere for the games - Maida Vale area might be alright. Back in Eng-er-land in a week.

uptoeleven (uptoeleven), Monday, 22 May 2006 17:55 (nineteen years ago)

I'd suggest Ealing.

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Monday, 22 May 2006 18:16 (nineteen years ago)

I'd rather stick pins uin my eyes. except I'll probably end up watching some matches in the borough of Ealing, but only because I work in it (only just)

Like G, I'll be watching 5 days worth in Spain - this should be ace. The timings of the games mean I'm going to miss at least one match per day thanksd to work - I missed about 3 games laast time around :(

Porkpie (porkpie), Monday, 22 May 2006 18:49 (nineteen years ago)

I'd rather stick pins uin my eyes. except I'll probably end up watching some matches in the borough of Ealing, but only because I work in it (only just)

There's something fitting about people cheering on their respective countries in the worst place in those countries. If you love En-ger-land, love Ealing!

I'm thinking of organising a flag of St.George-burning ceremony in Hyde Park to coincide with the first match.

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Monday, 22 May 2006 20:35 (nineteen years ago)

it appears that i may be doing quite a lot of overtime during june. that wasn't very clever of me, was it? fortunately i can pick and choose when i do it and i can listen to the radio whilst doing it, so i shouldn't miss too much...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 11:29 (nineteen years ago)

12 June (Italy/USA group games)- London
27 June (second round games) - Torquay
WC Final - New York!

and all the other games - somewhere in Cheshire

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 11:39 (nineteen years ago)

I thought Ealing was nice.

That nice pub nr Paddington (Queen Victoria?) claims to have something called a "comfortable theatre bar" where you can watch the entire World Cup for £25.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 11:41 (nineteen years ago)

Torquay is no place to be watching football.

I will be watching this tournament in London*, New York*, DC* and (for the final) Reykjavik, which sounds pretty good.

*with some of you lot, in the pub, for some of the time, I hope.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 11:44 (nineteen years ago)

I note that the first England game falls on Onimo's birthday, so some Glaswegian dividing lines can be set up, with Alba and Madchen on one side and the rest of us on the other.

I'm tentatively up for that, though my wife may plans for me that don't involve getting drunk and watching football.

Tom my Boyd spoiled my '98 WC birthday fap.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 11:47 (nineteen years ago)

why not Torquay? i'm doing some voluntary garden work for a hospital down there, for World Environment Day, so i need to stay over the night before and catch the footy in the hotel hopefully.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 11:48 (nineteen years ago)

bit off topic

but any of you doing fantasy league?

secondhandnews (secondhandnews), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 12:10 (nineteen years ago)

I'm watching most of the group stage and all the second round on a Greek island.

Opening game - I suggest pub with you lot.

England/Paraguay - wife's friend's wedding :(

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 12:37 (nineteen years ago)

but any of you doing fantasy league?

Yes! you should find the thread if you do a 'show all recently updated threads'.

I'd love to watch the opening game (a dull 1-0 for Germany as it's likely to be) in pub with y'all but where oh where?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 12:38 (nineteen years ago)

Cockpit.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 12:39 (nineteen years ago)

is that leeds?

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 12:41 (nineteen years ago)

That nice pub nr Paddington (Queen Victoria?) claims to have something called a "comfortable theatre bar" where you can watch the entire World Cup for £25.

That is indeed a nice pub (it's my local), but the theatre bar is pretty tiny, and, I imagine, would be uncomfortably crowded for world cup action.

gooblar (gooblar), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 12:41 (nineteen years ago)

I'm going to be in Canada from June 26 until the final. If anyone knows of bars in Victoria that would be likely to show matches, I would be very grateful if you could help me out. Might as well ask here as anywhere else

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 12:44 (nineteen years ago)

i don't suppose anyone wants to watch roland garros in the pub with me?

there must surely be pubs which show the finest in clay-court tennis.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 13:00 (nineteen years ago)

Cockpit is too small I think, PJ, but might work.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 13:03 (nineteen years ago)

Ste, there's only one place to watch football in the sublime county of Devon, and that's Exeter.

I suppose if you're trapped there you have no choice.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 14:22 (nineteen years ago)

I think somewhere with a Carribean flavour would be best.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 14:25 (nineteen years ago)

thinking about it i might stay in exeter instead, so my colleagues can pick me up in the morning.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 14:26 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think you'll be seeing too much of me during this forthcoming WCup

Samuel KB Amphong (Dada), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 14:33 (nineteen years ago)

You expecting to be on the bench?

Crimea River (Mark C), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 14:35 (nineteen years ago)

rofl

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 14:36 (nineteen years ago)

I know England are desperate for fit strikers but that's ridiculous

Samuel KB Amphong (Dada), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 15:24 (nineteen years ago)

Anyone else going to be in Frankfurt on the weekend of 10 June?

beanz (beanz), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

I am looking forward to getting up at 5:30 in the morning to watch games at the pub before work! Anyone else living in -8GMT?

yours fondly, harshaw. (mrgn), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 21:20 (nineteen years ago)

Here's the details on that bar above The End I mentioned upthread:
http://www.akalondon.com/venuehire/football2006.php

It says something about venue hire for private parties, but I think that's just the upper level.

Teh HoBBercraft (the pirate king), Thursday, 25 May 2006 19:26 (nineteen years ago)

we've got loads of places to watch games where the teasm supporters will be - a brazilian bar for the brazil games, a swiss church for the swiss games etc
http://www.stattostatto.com
enjoy

simon andrews (stattostatto), Saturday, 3 June 2006 13:05 (nineteen years ago)

OK so!

England games: pubs bad, excellent people good, where?

Non-england games: where?

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 8 June 2006 12:09 (nineteen years ago)

we're going to the white hart on druary lane for the t&t gamenot excellent but they were letting you book tables, which means a lot to an old fart to me

secondhandnews (secondhandnews), Thursday, 8 June 2006 12:13 (nineteen years ago)

Bull & Gate is another option for T&T match. Frank Sidebottom! etc.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 8 June 2006 12:23 (nineteen years ago)

At every tournament since 2000 I've watched at least one Holland game at De Hems. Kind of a tradition now, plus I look quite Dutch so they all think I'm part of the Oranje massive.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Friday, 9 June 2006 06:12 (nineteen years ago)

I'm going to try and watch Holland v Argentina in De Hems.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 9 June 2006 07:50 (nineteen years ago)

What about Spain? I want somewhere full of gigar-smoking lardy middle-aged grumps yearning for the return of Franco.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 9 June 2006 08:05 (nineteen years ago)

Your local Conservative Club should fit the bill.

Shadow of the Waxwing (noodle vague), Friday, 9 June 2006 08:09 (nineteen years ago)

i went to the offside bar on city road once and it was quite nice lots of screens and big but then it was only to watch manu vs city on a saturday afternoon so probably not the same as england england england may well be packed.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 9 June 2006 08:10 (nineteen years ago)

i think i will be mostly watching at home - the champions league final put me off football at pubs.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 9 June 2006 08:11 (nineteen years ago)

cigar, not gigar. They should be Spanish grumps. I forgot to specify that. Obv Conservative Club doesn't allow any dago-wop types in.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 9 June 2006 08:15 (nineteen years ago)

I'm going to be watching a fair few games in Offside. Maybe even the opening game later - it depends if we get decent sound output to go with the plasma screen at the end of the room or not.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 9 June 2006 08:18 (nineteen years ago)

We watched the World Cup draw in the Offside bar. They served German food and then a band played lots of bad jaunty England songs. Dave B bought his laptop and we played with the spreadsheet within seconds of the final name emerging from the hat.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 9 June 2006 08:18 (nineteen years ago)

i went to the offside bar on city road once and it was quite nice lots of screens and big but then it was only to watch manu vs city on a saturday afternoon

I remember that City v United game, Ken! Nice memories indeed.

I've seen that bar get uncomfortably packed for Sunday 4pm prem games, so imagine the World cup...

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Friday, 9 June 2006 08:41 (nineteen years ago)

Anybody fancy Canada Square Park for that outdoor screen experience?

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Friday, 9 June 2006 08:42 (nineteen years ago)

**Bull & Gate is another option for T&T match. Frank Sidebottom! etc. **

This really will be a cracking evening, and I'm not just saying that because we're on the bill! You'll also get the chance to see I, Ludicrous, who everyone should see at least once. The B&G website says 21 tickets left, but I have been told that there will be room for a number of people to pay on the night too.

Dr.C (Dr.C), Friday, 9 June 2006 10:48 (nineteen years ago)

Weather forecast for Glasgow, saturday - sunny 28 degrees c.

Mr wants to watch football, I want to bask in the sun.

Ideal solution would be pub with outdoor telly.

Rumpsy Pumpsy (Rumpie), Friday, 9 June 2006 11:06 (nineteen years ago)

Opening ceremony and first game at SOAS. Big screen up and working (goes to check for the third time today). Cheap beer, comfy sofas, good view....

Pete (Pete), Friday, 9 June 2006 11:07 (nineteen years ago)

...miles away ;-p

Rumpie, if you find a pub with an outdoor telly, let me know!

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 9 June 2006 11:08 (nineteen years ago)

UCLH 52 club may be an option for me too on gower st :)

ken c (ken c), Friday, 9 June 2006 11:17 (nineteen years ago)

similar thing cheap bear comfy sofa good view of nurses

ken c (ken c), Friday, 9 June 2006 11:17 (nineteen years ago)

Don't worry ailsa, I will!

I might just make him a deal, we can sit outside until the Sweden game starts and then decamp indoors.

Rumpsy Pumpsy (Rumpie), Friday, 9 June 2006 11:19 (nineteen years ago)

Nurses?

Rumpsy Pumpsy (Rumpie), Friday, 9 June 2006 11:19 (nineteen years ago)

i work for the NHS, pal.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 9 June 2006 11:29 (nineteen years ago)

haha

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 9 June 2006 11:30 (nineteen years ago)

SOAS it is for me. Might go on for the second game, might go home, depends how tired I feel after my unusually early start today.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 9 June 2006 11:31 (nineteen years ago)

I can just imagine at Ken's work, all the wards being up in arms at 5pm, as the patients can't watch the game. And then, with proper Kenneth William/Kenneth Chu crossover clarity, a single voice cries out, saving the day:

"Matron. The Screens!"

Pete (Pete), Friday, 9 June 2006 11:32 (nineteen years ago)

I am going out on a reconnaisance mission this afternoon (thinly-veiled excuse to go to the pub early) to investigate proximity of beer gardens to tellies.

So, er, yes, this afternoon I will be watching the first game in a pub tbc. Tomorrow I shall be watching England v Paraguay in whatever pub passes my stringent checks this afternoon.

(Stringent checks = food, seats, ease of seeing telly, lack of idiots)

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 9 June 2006 11:39 (nineteen years ago)

Hmmm, Cottiers?

Rumpsy Pumpsy (Rumpie), Friday, 9 June 2006 11:44 (nineteen years ago)

Can non-students come in, Pete?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 9 June 2006 11:47 (nineteen years ago)

also: bush hall are hosting world cup viewing things at their gaff: £10 entry but includes 3 drinks apparently and "complimentary snacks". actually that's quite expensive.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 9 June 2006 11:58 (nineteen years ago)

I am not going, by the way, I was just wondering, is all.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 9 June 2006 12:11 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, just say my name at the door or pretend to have proper business here. Like watching the football.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 9 June 2006 12:44 (nineteen years ago)

OK, cheers.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 9 June 2006 12:55 (nineteen years ago)

A pub/bar near my work (potion, corner of maple street and fitzroy st) has installed plasmas in its windows for outdoor world cup watching. I dislike the place though.

Ed (dali), Friday, 9 June 2006 15:11 (nineteen years ago)

freemasons arms, long acre (london, obv like) for the bud cup (usa vs czech) tonight. i shall be tootling over for 5, so will hopefully get the window seats.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 12 June 2006 13:41 (nineteen years ago)

ken c (ken c), Monday, 12 June 2006 13:48 (nineteen years ago)

Thursday is my London day.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Monday, 12 June 2006 13:53 (nineteen years ago)

Carsmile, Steady Mike and I are going to watch that game, too!

the pinefox (the pinefox), Monday, 12 June 2006 13:53 (nineteen years ago)

A bit like on the terraces, but flat, and inside, and with people holding pints. Or a bit like something out of 1984.

OK, revise that. The 2006 version would be "lots of chairs and tables, all reserved for 'private clients', with ordinary punters crammed into small spaces where they can barely see the screen (or 'scream')". Having said that - five bottles of Kronenbourg in an ice bucket for a tenner isn't bad.

Teh HoBBercraft (the pirate king), Thursday, 15 June 2006 21:15 (nineteen years ago)

So did Hopkins make it?

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 15 June 2006 22:35 (nineteen years ago)

YES!

i got a text from him this morning saying he saw the last hour of the game, hurrah!

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 16 June 2006 09:11 (nineteen years ago)

Bump. Pub tomorrow anyone?

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 19 June 2006 14:49 (nineteen years ago)

see you at the 52 club, gower st.?

ken c (ken c), Monday, 19 June 2006 15:06 (nineteen years ago)

Bit far, I've got work in the morning...

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 19 June 2006 15:06 (nineteen years ago)

i'd quite like to watch the game tomorrow night in a pub near the Swedish church (but not the one right next to it) on Harcourt St in Soho - so as to rub it in their pretty faces at the end (it = balm of exquisite and emphatic victory hopefully), no aggressively tho of course.
