That has to be one of the best audience reaction shots I've ever seen. It's very American.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 22 May 2006 14:49 (nineteen years ago)

That girl, wtf?

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Monday, 22 May 2006 14:51 (nineteen years ago)

Indeed.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 22 May 2006 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

Someone should be cropping into individual 'O' faces..

gooblar (gooblar), Monday, 22 May 2006 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

the catcher had cracked the guy on the right across the jaw, and the little dude in the middle is at this moment running into the middle of it to receive his own whuppin, is the sequence of events, i believe.

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 22 May 2006 14:55 (nineteen years ago)

"Most incredible! He has just struck a spherical white ball with a long wooden stick!"

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Monday, 22 May 2006 14:55 (nineteen years ago)

"spherical white ball"

Uh, yeah.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Monday, 22 May 2006 14:56 (nineteen years ago)

that guy in the back t-shirt i is hilarious. he seems to be in mid-slo-mo action.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Monday, 22 May 2006 15:00 (nineteen years ago)

I think the big man in the upper right is what makes it. He seems rather larger than everyone else, and calm.

Teh "big" man, I mean.

gooblar (gooblar), Monday, 22 May 2006 15:04 (nineteen years ago)

That little kid in the pink hat...you can almost see her illusions about sportsmanlike conduct being shattered.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 22 May 2006 15:05 (nineteen years ago)

The girl in the pink shirt though, in the upper left...she's having a blast.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 22 May 2006 15:06 (nineteen years ago)

Haha ok so this was the fight that they accidentally momentarily cut to in the bar on Saturday? Because, like, we're sitting there with a bunch of HORSE GAMBLERS who are waiting on the Preakness and like 5 minutes before the horses go to run, every TV in the joint suddenly and mysterious switches...TO BASEBALLERS BEATING THE TAR OUT OF EACH OTHER. This lasts for like 10-15 seconds then everything goes back to ponies, just as they're about to take off outta the gate and break their legs. It was kind of the most amazing 1 minute of television I've ever seen, all by accident.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Monday, 22 May 2006 15:06 (nineteen years ago)

Oh fuck, I was RESISTING the Harold and Kumar jokes. But I thought of it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 22 May 2006 15:08 (nineteen years ago)

Well they are making that face for 85% OF THE MOVIE

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Monday, 22 May 2006 15:11 (nineteen years ago)

I realize this.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 22 May 2006 15:12 (nineteen years ago)

OMG!

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Monday, 22 May 2006 15:25 (nineteen years ago)

Their reactions are more what you'd expect if it was poop that was flying at them rather than a bat.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Monday, 22 May 2006 15:26 (nineteen years ago)

I put it to you that bats are heavier and hurt more when flung than poop. But if you know otherwise, I will not question it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 22 May 2006 15:29 (nineteen years ago)

I really like that one because the bat actually looks totally motionless and harmless.

gooblar (gooblar), Monday, 22 May 2006 15:31 (nineteen years ago)

bottom right: HUNTER THOMPSON IS NOT DEAD, JUST A RETIREE IN MINNESOTA

p@reene (Pareene), Monday, 22 May 2006 15:31 (nineteen years ago)

I put it to you that bats are heavier and hurt more when flung than poop. But if you know otherwise, I will not question it.

I only mean that their faces look more "Eeew!" than "AAAAHHH!"

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Monday, 22 May 2006 15:35 (nineteen years ago)

Except for top left guy, who looks like he's anticipating a giant fireball of death.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Monday, 22 May 2006 15:36 (nineteen years ago)

(Changing the subject entirely, p@reene, am I right in assuming that was you that one M. Malk1n was complaining about on her site the other day?)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 22 May 2006 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

Brilliant!
Love chewing gum mans face!

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Monday, 22 May 2006 15:43 (nineteen years ago)

Human beings look ridiculous when they're frightened! They actually look even sillier than silly-comical imitations of frightened people; nothing beats the real thing. I think I officially learned this when I saw an America's Funniest Home Videos clip where a guy pretends he's being electrocuted and his friend makes like Don Knotts and Bill Cosby having the same orgasm for a few seconds before realizing what's going on and slamming a banana in the other guy's face. (Then obviously I returned to my home planet to report this amazing thing I'd learned about human beings.)

I'd actually like to see a horror / action / suspense film in which people make actual frightened-faces -- it'd be the most hilarious thing ever.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 22 May 2006 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

Chewing gum man looks like he's shrieking like a big blousy vagina!! Get one set of juevos my friend!

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Monday, 22 May 2006 15:50 (nineteen years ago)

ned, you are correct, sir.

p@reene (Pareene), Monday, 22 May 2006 15:50 (nineteen years ago)

Noted, noted. I was just startled to see a familiar name.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 22 May 2006 15:51 (nineteen years ago)

But like yeah, if you were an actor, and someone asked you to look frightened, and you accurately recreated a normal human fright-face, you would get sent home and told your physical comedy was way too over-the-top.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 22 May 2006 15:51 (nineteen years ago)

"crosstown"? maybe if the cubs still played on the west side, and even then i don't think so.

CROSSTOWN = the cubs play on the north side and the sox play on the south side. does "cross" always have to indicate horizontal movement?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 22 May 2006 19:20 (nineteen years ago)

Err, doesn't it?

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 22 May 2006 19:26 (nineteen years ago)

I crossed the border from the U.S. to Mexico.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 22 May 2006 19:36 (nineteen years ago)

Anyway, the pedantry is tiresome when the term "Crosstown Classic" has been used for Cubs vs. Sox games for several decades now.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 22 May 2006 19:43 (nineteen years ago)

I think of "cross-town" as a shortening of "across", which I think is horizontal by definition. Whereas the verb "to cross" doesn't seem necessarily directional. But I dunno what they call these sports things so I defer to yr historial knowledge.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 22 May 2006 19:45 (nineteen years ago)

Jaymc, I was going to argue that point -- I mean, one thing is across town from the other -- and say that maybe Stencil was the one falling prey to NYC linguistic imperialism concerning what "crosstown" should mean, but ... the thing is that New Yorkers use "crosstown" a lot, and Chicagoans basically never: you would say "to the north side" or "to the south side" and that would be that. (And you might say "I'm going across town," but that's a whole different preposition from using "crosstown" as a one-word adjective!)

At the same time, though, I apparently don't know enough about baseball to understand why it would ever use "crosstown." I mean, "subway series" makes sense, but "crosstown" is kinda Manhattan-based, and one team's on the north end of Queens and the other's in the Bronx (right?), so it's really just north-west/south-east interborough action, surely.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 22 May 2006 19:47 (nineteen years ago)

(I.e., NYC teams can't go "crosstown" in NYC terms, either, unless maybe there was some old stadium-organization trick I'm not aware of.)

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 22 May 2006 19:48 (nineteen years ago)

N., you're right that nobody in Chicago ever uses the term "crosstown" outside of the phrase "Crosstown Classic."

But Webster's defines "crosstown" as "situated at opposite points of a town" [crosstown schools] or "extending or running across a town" [a crosstown bus].

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 22 May 2006 19:52 (nineteen years ago)

I happily defer to Webster! (But I still like "Otherside Antique.")

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Monday, 22 May 2006 20:35 (nineteen years ago)

Best of that Cantona pic: the old bald guy in the upper left corner with his lips pursed like a toothless farmer who looks COMPLETELY unsurprised.
