Found this out whilst flicking through the ol' freeview set-top digibox thingy... More4+1 is no more, and Filmfour will be free to digital viewers from July:

Will this announcement mean changes to the quality of the programming prior to July?
No, there will be no changes until the new free-to-air channel launches in July.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 07:48 (nineteen years ago)

did anyone subscribe to filmfour? like ever?

it seemed to consist entirely of screenings of 'reservoir dogs', 'blue velvet', and 'trainspotting'.

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 07:52 (nineteen years ago)

and withnail and i

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 08:02 (nineteen years ago)

'the big lewbowski'
'romeo + juliet'
'true romance'

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 08:04 (nineteen years ago)

This si a major blow to those of us who enjoyed watching Deal Or No Deal twice and impressing ourselves by always guessing correctly second time round.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 08:11 (nineteen years ago)

hahaha

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 08:11 (nineteen years ago)

very so!

Actually, it's one way of seeing DOND *and* the Simpsons...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 08:13 (nineteen years ago)

though surely gotta be a blow for sky movies, moan all we like about the choice of films on film4 it'll be free and on freeview

e4music when it came on freeview took a major chunk outta the hits and the other music channels and its only on a few hours a day

i for one welcome our new free slightly alternative but not really film channel overlords

secondhandnews (secondhandnews), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 08:15 (nineteen years ago)

yeah the more free things the better obv!

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 08:16 (nineteen years ago)

Do the films have adverts?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 08:18 (nineteen years ago)

Yes.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 08:21 (nineteen years ago)

10pm-ish films for the next four nights:

Copland
Sexy Beast
Donnie Brasco
Gangster #1

I think I could quite happily watch these if there was nothing else on and I wasn't paying for it.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 08:22 (nineteen years ago)

yeah... i wonder what the gender spread is, with filmfour subscribers.

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 08:23 (nineteen years ago)

Looks like the 6pm slot is mainly used for foreign and/or arthouse type films, but I'd miss most of them travelling home from work.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 08:26 (nineteen years ago)

But More4+1 is essential, as it allows us to watch both Coronation St and the Daily Show on a Monday, instead of having to make a choice.

Oh wait, I have Sky plus. Never mind.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:28 (nineteen years ago)

my mofo+1 misery is recoutned on the west wing thread.

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:30 (nineteen years ago)

Did they mention anything about enabling more4 on freesat?

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:34 (nineteen years ago)

film 4 does seem to be the reservoir dogs channel. there did used to be a Film Four World channel as well showing the more interesting stuff but it all got scaled down a couple of years ago (about the same time that bbc2 and ch4 stopped showing anything foreign). hope it has a decent bandwidth allocation as well.

(daily show on monday is usually the global edition which is all repeats anyway)

koogs (koogs), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:38 (nineteen years ago)

I think I could quite happily watch these if there was nothing else on and I wasn't paying for it.

exactly. yay.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:43 (nineteen years ago)

I've often toyed with the idea of getting FilmFour because I hardly watch anything on the telly and there's maybe a couple of films on that I would watch each week and that sort of return seems worth £6 a month. But I never actually got round to it.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:46 (nineteen years ago)

i once subscribed to Film4 for a short time. before we cancelled i was randomly called in to a Focus Group for them. they paid me cash. we ended up on the deal! they used to do a classic film early on which was nice. i wish we had TNT on homechoice :-(

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:58 (nineteen years ago)

Early on classic film is More 4's afternoon matinee!

BBC4 is rocking the good foreign films at the moment, Ateranjuat was on on Monday (naked Inuit running across ice - bad for feet surely) and Noi Albinoi on Friday - the answer to the Albino Societies suggest that all albino's are presented as bad guys in films.

Darwin's Nightmare tonight, excellent ecological documentary.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 10:35 (nineteen years ago)

Best thing on the freebox is of course UKTV History. Except when they have an All Fred Dibnah All The Time day.

ledge (ledge), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 10:40 (nineteen years ago)

I thought that was every day.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 10:41 (nineteen years ago)

No no, they have All [that bloke off Coast with the umbrella in his rucksask] All The Time days too.

ledge (ledge), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 10:44 (nineteen years ago)

This was announced months ago. Nuts readers will be pleased.
