Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 08:53 (nineteen years ago)

to be fair, they gave you quite a lot of leeway within the status quo back catalogue.

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 08:56 (nineteen years ago)

count yr blessings, I'd say.

Usual situ: Rod Stewart, Chic, Dexys (one record in partic), Grease megamix, etc...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 08:56 (nineteen years ago)

how can you not play the grease megamix?!

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 08:57 (nineteen years ago)

i don't care who people are, i would never ever ever play the arctic monkeys.

i have to dj for an 18-yr-old's bday party in july. i am hoping they are an r&b 18-yr-old rather than an indie 18-yr-old.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 08:57 (nineteen years ago)

jacques lu cont remixes will prob go down well!

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 08:57 (nineteen years ago)

lex, that's like being a clown who 'doesn't do' custard pies.

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 08:59 (nineteen years ago)

Red Hot Chilli Peppers is a difficult one for me, far moreso than Arctic Monkeys. I will have to be another person for the night.

x-post I sure hope so! they will be a brief respite.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 08:59 (nineteen years ago)

arctic monkeys are not for parties. they're indie and you don't play indie at parties because that sort of thing is just NOT DONE!!!

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:00 (nineteen years ago)

it's IMPOLITE!

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:00 (nineteen years ago)

haha i just saw placebo on the list of requests :o

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:01 (nineteen years ago)

If Norman Cook can do a 'weddings' singles box, you know what you can do...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:03 (nineteen years ago)

a party without everyone on ecstacy! who can have prepared for this moment!

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:03 (nineteen years ago)

ronan you have to 'close' with 'under the bridge'.

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:04 (nineteen years ago)

segue from 'rockin' all over the world'

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:05 (nineteen years ago)

all saints version OBV as that is actually quite good and all

xp

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:05 (nineteen years ago)

no no, DROP THE PRESSURE

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:06 (nineteen years ago)

was the list by one person? how many people like interpol, vitalic, and... stereophonics?

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:07 (nineteen years ago)

I thought The Lex had never heard AM.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:09 (nineteen years ago)

i have never heard any arctic monkeys songs, no, because they are the worst band to exist EVER.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:10 (nineteen years ago)

ELECTRIC SLIDE !!!!!!!!!!!!

Mr Jones (Mr Jones), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:11 (nineteen years ago)

Dear god... (xpost)

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:12 (nineteen years ago)

how many people like interpol, vitalic, and... stereophonics?

Probably loads, jaysus.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:12 (nineteen years ago)

srsly?

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:12 (nineteen years ago)

(this conversation also available on long playing record, CD, mp3 and ringtone)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:12 (nineteen years ago)

AF OTM

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:13 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, of course, Enrique. They're all Serious Music, surely Serious People should be able to enjoy them?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:13 (nineteen years ago)

Haha, actually, there's very little on that list I wouldn't play (Arctic Monkeys, Kings of Leon, that sort of stuff).

Clearly the answer is to start drinking again. Or just put an ipod on random and pretend you're doing something.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:14 (nineteen years ago)

that list is so random, nobody likes vitalic and the stereophonics, sorry.

in breaking news, I might not be playing at this! I was just speaking to the venue manager and he's kind of iffy about having a DJ in, which my cousin didn't seem to realise.

I was like "oh no.....now that's terrible".

But I still think I might "get to do it".

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:17 (nineteen years ago)

Actual answer for these situations is to use these lists as a vague guide, keep vaguely within the parameters but drop everything you really dislike and substitute it with stuff you do that would work (eg Drop The Pressure, JLC, any house records that everyone knows, lots of 2002 filter-disco).

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:17 (nineteen years ago)

doubt most 'phonics fans have *heard* of ver 'pol or 'talic...

xp ronan otm

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:18 (nineteen years ago)

most of these songs are good!

even 'renegades of funk' haha

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:19 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yeah the last DJ they had in the venue apparently blew the soundsystem, so they're a bit iffy cos of that.

The manager was like "what do you play"

"......status quo, vitalic, the stereophonics"

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:20 (nineteen years ago)

"i don't care who people are, i would never ever ever play the arctic monkeys."

so you play for yrslf instead of the public?

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:20 (nineteen years ago)

Is it really that difficult to imagine people would be into both, say, 2ManyDJs and Stereophonics? Most young people in 'not listening to music in the way ILXers think they do' shocker.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:22 (nineteen years ago)

i give the public what they need not what they want, ie vitalic and christina milian instead of...ugh...arctic monkeys and kaiser chiefs. it's for their own good.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:23 (nineteen years ago)

2manydjs and Stereophonics is different from Vitalic and Stereophonics.

Also this is definitely 3 or 4 peoples list.

Though I do think there is a certain crossover with Vitalic at the moment.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:23 (nineteen years ago)

indie kids into electro tend to like indie bands like the editors and the killers rather than stereofuckingphonics

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:24 (nineteen years ago)

obv editors and killers ALSO shit just not as shit as kelly jones and crew

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:24 (nineteen years ago)

Matt DC OTM. If you can't find Quo or Kanye or even Oasis songs you don't enjoy then you're not trying hard enough. You do need to accidentally forget your Stereophonics CD, though, or leave it till the end and give them a choice between that and "I Will Survive".

Most of all, this is a favour for a friend, it's not about your taste (even though you've been asked to incorporate that too. All you need to do is relax and watch loads of people have a great time dance to the Chilli Peppers.

Crimea River (Mark C), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:25 (nineteen years ago)

yeah you might get someone who likes both 'La Rock' AND 'Dakota' but you'd be hard pushed to find someone who has seen both acts live, i would've thought.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:25 (nineteen years ago)

Lex, are you even gonna research and find out what the kids you're playing to want to hear? if not disaster surely beckons.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:26 (nineteen years ago)

if i'm being asked to dj i assume it is about my taste to some extent!

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:26 (nineteen years ago)

oh yeah playing for the public sucks too. you play to make people enjoy themselves but music everyone knows all night is deadwood (given you're in a decent club where djing is actually something people have come to see/dance to)

x-post Mark you're totally otm. I said to my cousin just yesterday "I am only a DJ for this in the sense I can use the equipment, send me all the stuff you want to hear".

It's just difficult and sort of funny, DJing is my livelihood at the moment and I work/live in a musical cocoon.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:26 (nineteen years ago)

(stevem, i plan to ask the child's mother what genres her offspring is into. i fear that she will not know.)

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:27 (nineteen years ago)

Well yeah, the difference is in profile really, rather than whether or not the music fits. Vitalic is so catchy and rock-friendly anyway, it's not like they're requested Villalobos or something.

Clearly the answer to this Arctic Monkeys quandry is to play the Sugababes version.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:28 (nineteen years ago)

I would do that but I AM NOT A POPIST.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:30 (nineteen years ago)

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:31 (nineteen years ago)

Steve - I don't think anyone's suggesting playing live albums!

Lex - You weren't asked to DJ, you asked to DJ.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:34 (nineteen years ago)

i learned to move the crowd -- the hard way.

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:35 (nineteen years ago)

Answering the original question, I actually really like doing this. My housemate asked me to play her birthday party in August, with the instructions to play loads of country and lots of chart pop but nothing more obscure than Crazy In Love. My reaction was somewhere in between "I'll get drunk and lazily ad-lib the whole thing and everyone will dance whatever happens" and "OMG I AM GOING TO PLAY THE BIGGEST POP SET EVER!"

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:38 (nineteen years ago)

i like to educate them as well as take them on a journey.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:38 (nineteen years ago)

yes this time i asked to dj but 99% of the time I am asked to dj. by people who know what my taste is.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:38 (nineteen years ago)

doubt most 'phonics fans have *heard* of ver 'pol or 'talic...

Interpol must surely have got an NME front page. Vitalic as well, possibly?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:42 (nineteen years ago)

no wai.

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:43 (nineteen years ago)

maybe interpol.

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:43 (nineteen years ago)

interpol are the only boys-with-guitars band of this decade that i have any affection for.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:44 (nineteen years ago)

ok yeah interpol have had an nme cover. but even then, stereophonics are on a different level, audience-wise. interpol are not a household name, not among people i know anyway.

Enrique IX: The Mediator (Enrique), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:46 (nineteen years ago)

Ah right, that's fair enough Lex. Of course, this sort of mandate, applied loosely, can be good if it guarantees a crowd, like your (great) hiphop set at Lovelife at the request of someone who brought 80% of the audience.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:46 (nineteen years ago)

There are 52 NME's a year, you'd be surprised what gets on the front page.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:48 (nineteen years ago)

i give the public what they need not what they want, ie vitalic and christina milian instead of...ugh...arctic monkeys and kaiser chiefs. it's for their own good.

Need? Obv they need the Arctic Monkeys or they wouldn't have asked for it.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:49 (nineteen years ago)

ihttp://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/31/Nme1.jpg

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:50 (nineteen years ago)

just as much to the point, when was the last time stereophonics had an nme cover?

as regards djing at this kind of thing, it's alot harder when you DJ every week, sometimes more than once, playing niche music.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:50 (nineteen years ago)

That said, five hours worth is a lot in any genre. Even three is pushing it when it's not what you usually play. Surely they can rope a few more people in?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 09:59 (nineteen years ago)

But... but I love Renegades of Funk (massive xpost).

Truth be told that list doesn't seem so bad. Get twisted and enjoy the evening. Sure it's not like djing is actually all that hard? It's just playing records really...

*Runs for the door*

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 10:08 (nineteen years ago)

that list sounds like one of my sets

secondhandnews (secondhandnews), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 10:45 (nineteen years ago)
